Gillette Museum of Arthropod Diversity, Department of Bioagricultural Sciences and Pest Management Colorado State University, Fort Collins, CO 80523 Abstract A list of 1531 species ofLepidoptera is presented, collected over 15 years (1988 to 2002), in eleven southern West Virginia counties. A variety of collecting methods was used, including netting, light attracting, light trapping and pheromone trapping. The specimens were identified by the currently available pictorial sources and determination keys. Many were also sent to specialists for confirmation or identification. The majority of the data was from Kanawha County, reflecting the area of more intensive sampling effort by the senior author. This imbalance of data between Kanawha County and other counties should even out with further sampling of the area. Key Words: Appalachian Mountains, -

Chapter 15 Chapter 15 CENTRAL AND EASTERN AFRICA: OVERVIEW The region as treated here is comprised mainly of Angola, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Congo (Brazzaville), Congo (Kinshasa) (formerly Zaire), Kenya, Malawi, Tanzania, Uganda, and Zambia. The wide variety of insects eaten includes at least 163 species, 121 genera, 34 families and 10 orders. Of this group the specific identity is known for 128 species, only the generic identity for another 21, only the family identity of another 12 and only the order identity of one. Gomez et al (1961) estimated that insects furnished 10% of the animal proteins produced annually in Congo (Kinshasa). Yet, in this region, as in others, insect use has been greatly under-reported and under-studied. Until recently, for example, the specific identity was known for fewer than twenty species of insects used in Congo (Kinshasa), but, in a careful study confined only to caterpillars and only to the southern part of the country, Malaisse and Parent (1980) distinguished 35 species of caterpillars used as food. The extent of insect use throughout the region is probably similar to that in Congo (Kinshasa) and Zambia, the best-studied countries. Research is needed. Caterpillars and termites are the most widely marketed insects in the region, but many others are also important from the food standpoint, nutritionally, economically or ecologically. As stated by this author (DeFoliart 1989): "One can't help but wonder what the ecological and nutritional maps of Africa might look like today if more effort had been directed toward developing some of these caterpillar, termite, and other food insect resources." The inclusion of food insects in the Africa-wide Exhibition on Indigenous Food Technologies held in Nairobi, Kenya, in 1995 is indicative of the resurgence of interest in this resource by the scientific community of the continent. -

Seasonal distribution of moths of the Koakoland (Mopane) Savanna in Ogongo, northern Namibia Grzegorz KOPIJ Department of Wildlife Management, University of Namibia, Katima Mulilio Campus, Private Bag 1096, Katima Mulilo, Namibia; e-mail: [email protected] Abstract: During the years 2011–2013, moths were collected in Koakoland (Mopane) Savanna in the Cuvelai Drainage System, Ovamboland, northern Namibia. In total, 77 species from 13 families have been identified. Their seasonal occurrence in this habitat was also investigated, with most species recorded in wet season between September and April, but with clear peak in February and March. The family Noctuidae was by far the most speciose (38 recorded species), followed by Crambidae (8 spp.), Sphingidae (6 spp.) and Arctiidae (4 spp.). All other families were represented by 1–3 species. For each species listed date of collection is given, and data on its global distribution. Lepidoptera fauna of Namibia has recently attracted attention of European entomologists. However, thorough surveys were conducted hitherto in a few areas only, such as Brandberg and Hobatere. The northern regions of the country were especially badly neglected. About 7 miles from the city is Pushkar Lake created by the touch of Lord Brahma. The Dargah of khawaja Moinuddin chisti is holiest shrine next to Mecca in the world. Ajmer is abode of certain flora and fauna that are particularly endemic to semi-arid and are specially adapted to survive in the dry waterless region of the state. Lepidoptera integument covered with scales forming colored patterns. Availability of moths were more during the nights and population seemed to be Confined to the light areas. Moths are insects with 2 pair of broad wings covered with microscopic scales drably coloured and held flat when at rest. They do not have clubbed antennae. They are nocturnal. Kiriakoff (l968) restricted the genus Stauropus to Palaearctic and put in tcntatively sikkimensis Moere together with other Oriental Stauropus-species to the genus IVbostauropus. However, this ,species is quite diflerent f'rom IVbostauropus ba.salis Moere and others and rather identical with Stauropus.flegi Linnaeus in many points. Hence a new subgenus Mksostauropus is erected for sikkimensis. Extcrnal features coincide with those of the nominate subgenus but male genitalia difrbr. Antennae in male bipectinatcd but apical one fourth serratcd, whi]c in IVlrostauropus one fifth serrated; hind- tibiae with oJLe pair ofspurs; rorewing with vein Mi stalked with a common stem of R2-Rs, rising from very near upper angle of cell but in Nbostantropus vein Mi rising t'rom upper angle of cell. -

Dans le présent article 370 références abordant ce thème pour l’Afrique sont citées. Des accès à cette information par ordre chronologique ainsi que par ordre alphabétique des noms d’auteurs sont fournies. Une liste systématique des noms scientifiques des espèces consommées en Afrique est encore établie. L’importance de l’information disponible pour divers groupes ethnolinguistiques est signalée. Abstract : Human consumption of insects or « lepidopterophagy » is becoming increasingly important. In the present paper 370 references dealing with this subject in Africa are quoted. GEORGE RESERVE IN SOUTHERN MICHIGAN Mary Talbot The Lindenwood Colleges St. Charles, Missouri 63301 This paper supplements one written ten years ago (Talbot 1963) concerning the Acanthomyops nesting in a two square mile area in south eastern Michigan. It presents a fifth species (A. subglaber) for the E. S. George Reserve, gives flight activities of A. claviger, adds a description of a method used by A. murphyi to invade Lnsius neoniger colonies and extends some brood and flight records and habitat ranges. Acanthomyops subglaber (Emery) This species has not been reported previously for the Reserve, and only two colonies have been discovered.
