Sci. 43(1): 57-75 (January 2008) Abstract We examined the effects of forest management practices (prescribed burning, me chanical, and prescribed burn plus mechanical) on saproxylic forest Coleoptera in the southern Appalachian Mountains of North Carolina. During the 2-yr study, we captured 37,191 Coleoptera with baited multiple-funnel traps and pipe traps, comprising 20 families and 122 species that were used for our analysis. Saproxylic beetle numbers increased greatly from the first year to the second year on all treatments. Species richness and total abundance of Coleoptera were not significantly affected by the treatments, but several families (e.g., Elateridae, Cleridae, Trogositi dae, Scolytidae) were significantly more abundant on treated plots. Abundances of many spe cies, including various species of Scolytidae were significantly affected by the treatments. How ever, these scolytids (Hylastes salebrosus Eichoff, Ips grandicollis Eichoff, Xyloborinus saxeseni Ratzburg, Xyleborus sp., Xyleborus atratus Eichoff) did not respond in the same way to the treatments. Likewise, other Coleoptera such as Pityophagus sp. (Nitidulidae), Hylobius pales Herbst (Curculionidae), and Xylotrechus sagittatus Germar (Cerambycidae) also varied in their responses to the treatments. Species richness was not significantly different for the spring 2003 trapping seasons, but the fall 2003 sample had a higher number of species on mechanical shrub removal only and mechanical shrub removal plus prescribed burning plots compared with con trols. -

To support the potential introduction of this Host range new parasitoid for biocontrol of EAB in North America, we surveyed EAB eggs on infested green ash (Fraxinus Risk assessment pennsylvanica Marsh) trees in the Russian Far East and documented the rate of EAB egg parasitism by O. pri- Wood borers morskyensis. After establishing quarantine colonies of O. primorskyensis in the United States, we tested the parasitoid Agrilus planipennis against eggs of 30 taxa of insects, mostly native North American wood-boring beetles in the families Buprestidae and Cerambycidae plus one unidentified weevil, one predatory coccinellid, one pentatomid and one moth. Fieldob- servations showed that EAB egg parasitism rate ranged from 23 to 44% in the Russian Far East and O. primorskyensis was the only egg parasitoid recovered from the parasitized eggs collected there. -

MacRae Monsanto Company 700 Chesterfield Parkway West Chesterfield, Missouri 63017 ABSTRACT Eighty species in 60 genera of cerambycid beetles were documented during a 17-year field survey of a national park (George Washington Memorial Parkway) that spans parts of Fairfax County, Virginia and Montgomery County, Maryland. Twelve species are documented for the first time from Virginia. The study increases the number of longhorned beetles known from the Potomac River Gorge to 101 species. Malaise traps and hand picking (from vegetation or at building lights) were the most successful capture methods employed during the survey. Periods of adult activity, based on dates of capture, are given for each species. Relative abundance is noted for each species based on the number of captures. Notes on plant foraging associations are noted for some species. Two species are considered adventive to North America. Am. 1–12 (2015); DOI: 10.1093/aesa/sav005 ABSTRACT Cerambycid beetles are abundant and diverse in forests, but much about their host rela- tionships and adult behavior remains unknown. Generic blends of synthetic pheromones were used as lures in traps, to assess the species richness, and phenology of cerambycids in forest fragments in north- ern Delaware. More than 15,000 cerambycid beetles of 69 species were trapped over 2 yr. Activity periods were similar to those found in previous studies, but many species were active 1–3 wk earlier in 2012 than in 2013, probably owing to warmer spring temperatures that year. In 2012, the blends were tested with and without ethanol, a host plant volatile produced by stressed trees. Of cerambycid species trapped in sufficient numbers for statistical analysis, ethanol synergized pheromone trap catches for seven species, but had no effect on attraction to pheromone for six species. One species was attracted only by ethanol. The generic pheromone blend, especially when combined with ethanol, was an effective tool for assessing the species richness and adult phenology of many cerambycid species, including nocturnal, crepuscular, and cryptic species that are otherwise difficult to find. [email protected]; https://orcid.org/0000-0003-3052-2910 Abstract New longhorn beetle taxon, Acanthoglyptus picollus gen. et sp. nov., is described and figured from Baltic amber found in the Baltic Sea coast, Yantarny settlement, Kaliningrad Region, Russia. The new amber inclusions presented here prove the occurrence of the tribe Anaglyptini in the ‘Baltic amber forest’, giving this group at least a Palaeogene age. The closest living relative of the extinct beetle appears to be the Chinese genus Yoshiakioclytus Niisato, 2007. A brief updated list of the described longhorn beetles from European ambers, including 6 subfamilies, 17 tribes, 25 genera, and 27 species is compiled. Der vorliegende Bernsteineinschluss weist auf das Vorkommen des Tribus Anaglyptini im „Baltischen Bernsteinwald“ hin und deutet auf ein zumindest paläogenes Alter für diese Gruppe. -
