MARK PARISH BURLINGTON, VT Dear parishioners and friends: We are living in challenging times and also much uncertainty, all of which can lead to further anxiety and con- cern. It is in times such as these that our faith and reliance on the providential guidance of God is that much more needed and welcomed. Prayer is essential for our lives and encouraging each other to pray, praying for each other, and praying for our world are the greatest gifts we can offer to one another. With this in mind, we have recently acquired votive candle racks for our devotional altars. I invite you to please take time to light a candle as an offering of prayer for your intentions. There are two candle racks up against the walls with smaller candles, which burn for several hours, and then larger candle racks directly in front of the Blessed Mother and St. Joseph altars, which are 6-day candles. Also, there are three 8-day candles - one on the shelf next to the Blessed Mother statue, another on the shelf next to St. Joseph, and another on the window sill next to the Divine Mercy image. Finally the tabernacle lamp is a 14-day candle. We are offering all of these can- dles as votive lights to burn for your special intentions. These lighted candles remind us that prayers are being offered up for special intentions and they serve to encourage each of us to a more intentional commitment to prayer. Votive candles are a beautiful tradition of our Catholic faith. To help defray the cost of the candles we ask for the following recommended donations: • For the candle racks please simply place a donation of your choice in the receptacle at the rack • Suggested offering for the 6-day candles is $4, 8-day is $5, and 14-day is $8 • Please email or call the parish with your intention and your offering can be mailed, dropped off, or placed in the collection at mass Once we receive your intentions for the larger 6-day, 8-day and 14-day candles we will place it and light it ac- cording to the devotional altar you specify. Each week the bulletin will list the multiple day candles that have been lit and the intentions for each. I hope that the return of this beautiful Catholic tradition to St. Mark Church will deepen each of our prayer lives and encourage us to reach out in prayer for one another. Be assured always of my prayer for all of you! ~Fr. National Vocation Awareness Week (NVAW) is an annual week-long celebration of the Catholic Church in the United States dedicated to promote vocations to the priesthood, diaconate and consecrated life through prayer and education, and to renew our prayers and support for those who are considering one of these particular vocations. NVAW began in 1976 when the U. S. bishops designated the 28th Sunday of the year for NVAW. In 1997, this celebration was moved to coincide with the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord, which fell on January 13 in 2013. Beginning in 2014, NVAW was moved to the first full week of November.
