2 Progress | First Lutheran Church | December 2020 PASTOR MICHAEL MUELLER

So much has been happening among us in recent weeks. Besides the national election and the ongoing pandemic, there are these…

Stage Weatherization If you have come to our drive-in worship service recently, you have seen that the stage has been fully weatherized. It now sports a vinyl tent-like enclosure with clear windows on the front and sides, a propane patio heater, and a locked, weatherproof case for the sound system. I want to express our shared gratitude to the FLC Foundation Board for providing the funding, to Terry Ryan for pursuing this particular solution and constructing a stair rail and to Mike Schuler for in- stalling the wiring and mounting the sound equipment. We have a dedicated team of leaders who have been committed to working out solutions. As a result, we are positioned to continue drive-in services for as long as people still want to drive in to worship. We have also been able to partner with Trinity Episcopal Church by sharing our outdoor setup, making it possible for their congregation also to meet outdoors for worship on Sundays at 10:00 AM.

Christmas Eve 2020 This will be a Christmas like none other, but we won’t be daunted. The high rates of COVID infec- tion in Rock County prevent us from gathering indoors for our traditional celebrations on Christ- mas Eve, so we are taking Christmas Eve outdoors! Come and sing out loud, hear the Christmas Gospel once again, and join in Communion with Emmanuel, the God who is with us – now, still, in the midst of every challenge. FLC will host 30-minute, drive-in services at 3:00 PM and 6:00 PM. A recorded, video worship ser- vice will also be premiered on Facebook and YouTube at 7:00 PM on Christmas Eve. Area congre- gations have been invited to use our parking lot for drive-in services, each a half-hour in length, at established times during the afternoon and evening. It is gratifying to be able to share the cel- ebration of Christ’s birth among us in this way! A Christmas offering envelope has been included in the newsletter for your convenience. You can bring it to one of the drive-in services or mail it in to the church office.

Visioning Update The FLC Vision Team has completed our series of three visioning retreats. Now we are working out the details of the strategies we have envisioned, in preparation for a congregation gathering on Sunday, January 17. That meeting will probably need to be largely online, and we will share more details when that becomes clearer. At that meeting we will walk with you through the whole process and explore strategies to reach, nourish, and empower the community around us with the gospel.

Staff changes I am saddened to say farewell to Peg Haeger in her staff role as Deacon at First Lutheran Church (see her letter in this issue), but I am grateful that she will continue to live and serve among us. She has been a great collaborator in my first year on staff and has provided valuable leadership to the congregation, especially through the interim period. We will certainly miss her administra- tive and organizational gifts.

At the same time, I am excited to announce that Arwen Twitchett will join our staff this month as the new Business Administrator. Sue Goike will work with her in December to make a smooth transition, and then Sue will finally get to retire again. Sue has given the congregation a great gift of servant leadership, working closely with our treasurer and Council to guide us back to a place of financial stability. Please take the opportunity to share your gratitude with both Sue and Peg! In the midst of many changes, may you be blessed in your Advent watching and waiting! Pr. Michael Mueller

Progress | First Lutheran Church | December 2020 3 DEACON PEG HAEGER

4 Progress | First Lutheran Church | December 2020 DEACON PEG HAEGER Refilling Our Spiritual Tanks

There were seven of us in a minivan on the road that night. My brother, Tom, had invited my par- ents and our family to Florida for Christmas. Tom lived in West Palm Beach, and he planned a special outing for us to Disney’s Epcot Theme Park to experience their outdoor pavilion Christ- mas concert. Ben Vereen narrated the biblical Christmas story, interwoven with choir and or- chestral music that touched our souls and set our toes tapping. Topping off the late evening we shared our holiday meal in Epcot’s Chinese restaurant.

Half-way home we realized two things… the tank didn’t have enough gas to get us back and, un- beknownst to us, most gas stations on the Florida Turnpike closed early on Christmas Eve. The three men in the van began to sweat, and the rest of us sat quietly not wanting to make it worse. What would happen if we didn’t spot an open station in time?

Cut to the chase…. We literally coasted into one of the few open stations - running on fumes - a few minutes after midnight on Christmas Day. It was a great reminder to be sure to check the gas!

God has blessed each of us with multiple ways to refill our spiritual tanks. In a strange way, as COVID makes impossible many of our traditional December events and celebrations, we have a unique opportunity to dive deeply into the season of Advent. Whether that means choosing to read a daily devotional, to set aside daily time to light a candle and pray, to write letters or cards to those we cannot see in person this year, or to enjoy the community of our drive-in or online worship services, God is blessing us differently this year.

December 2020 has the potential to keep our spiritual tanks full IF we slow down to graciously receive that which God offers to each of us. Instead of running on fumes, as we often do in the frenzy of the Christmas season, we can choose to focus on the true gift of the Christ child. In Je- sus we find, once again, the God that comes down to meet us!

Just as my family remembers the Christmas Eve we ran out of gas but were blessed by the retell- ing of the Christmas miracle through scripture and music, it is not likely that any of us will ever forget this December. 2020 doesn’t have to be a memory filled only with loss. This year also holds the promise of an Advent and Christmas when, involuntarily, we discovered the beauty of refilling our spiritual tanks.

This year FLC is collecting donations to help local people with their utility bills. Since we will not be having a service in the sanctuary this year, poinsettias would not be needed. Funds will go to help local families with their utility bills for this winter.

What to do?:Fill out the form below and return to the church by December 9.

Suggested donation is $16.00, but any amount can be donated.

Progress | First Lutheran Church | December 2020 7 FLC WOMEN Safe Families for Children Safe Families for Children (SFFC) provides a secure circle of support for parents and their children who are in difficult situations. They do this by offering support to families in need through providing volunteers who are: Host Families – After a screening process these families take in children for short peri- ods of time (average length is 6 weeks, can range from 2 days to 1 year), while placing parents maintain full custody. Family Friends – Provide support to placing families and host families (e.g. babysitting, transportation, mentoring and providing meals). Resource Friends – Donate lightly used items such as beds, furniture and clothing to help parents get back on their feet. Family Coaches are trained to provide resources and casework-like services to placing parents. They also en- sure that children are well cared for in host-family homes. SFFC builds support systems around families experiencing serious financial problems, homelessness, domes- tic violence, illness or depression, hospitalization, addiction and many other concerns. Did you know? State welfare emergency hotlines throughout the nation receive over 5 million calls per year of suspected child abuse or neglect. Of those calls about 1 million fit the criteria for state intervention. What hap- pens to the 4 million families that don’t qualify for intervention? Please watch future issues of the Progress newsletter to see how First Lutheran will become a support church for Safe Families for Children.

Craig Cares We have again been asked to sponsor students of Craig High School who won’t have a Christmas without our help. Many of these kids are homeless, some live with friends, and some have parents that have fallen on hard times. These kids are just trying to get through high school. Last year, I am proud to report that members of First Lutheran sponsored 17 of these students. The need will be greater this year due to the impact on the economy from the coronavirus. Last year they were able to help 160 students, the need was and is far greater! The target this year is 175 students but the need will be greater. Here is what you need to know to be a sponsor. This year, due to Covid, our job is a little easier. You are asked to provide $100 in gift cards based on a wish list the kids provide. The Craig Cares Team will purchase the stocking stuffers. The school will provide the wish lists to me as soon as possible to indicate the students gift card requests. You only need to put the student number on an envelope, enclose the cards and deliver them to Craig High School by December 9. If you can’t get the items to the school, call Jan at 352-7022 and I will make arrangements with you to get the envelope to the school for you. Or if you wish to make a mone- tary donation, write your check to Craig Cares and take it or mail it to the school at Craig Cares, 401 S. Ran- dall St., Janesville, WI 53545. I will also deliver your check for you if you wish. Please talk to Jan Pinnow if you would like to sponsor a child. You can reach me at 352-7022 or by email at [email protected] . Thank you in advance for your consideration of this very worthy program!

Order Your Cookbook. Do you know for what event the first group of Norwe- gians met that began First Lutheran in 1852? They continued to meet sporadically utilizing local pastors and various locations within Janesville, a city of 4,800. The answer to this ques- tion and many other interesting dates and events will be covered in the brief history included in the F.L.C.W. 2020 COOKBOOK. Jeannine Bown is taking early orders @ $10 per book. Make a check out to FLCW and mail it to her at 1413 N. Pontiac Dr., Janesville, WI 53545. Jeannine's phone number is 754-2071. By the way, the book also contains 311 wonderful recipes. Thanks Again to all who shared their tasty treats. Jeanette
