An altar server is a lay assistant to a member of the clergy during a religious service. An altar server attends to supporting tasks at the altar such as fetching and carrying, ringing bells, setting up, cleaning up, and so on. Until 1983, only young men whom the Church sometimes hoped to recruit for the priesthood and seminarians could serve at the altar, and thus altar boy was the usual term until Canon 230 was changed in the 1983 update to the Code of Canon which provided the option for local ordinaries (bishops) to permit females to serve at the altar. The term altar server is now widely used and accepted. When altar servers were only young men and seminarians the term acolyte was used. An acolyte is one of the instituted orders which is installed by a bishop. The title of acolyte is still only given to men as it is historically a minor order of ordained ministry. Check your name on the list and let Father know you are here. 3. Get dressed. Wear the appropriate-sized alb, making sure it comes approximately to your ankles and not dragging on the floor. Choose a cincture (robe belt) with the appropriate liturgical color. (Check with priest if you are not sure which color.) Place a cross around your neck. Be sure the alb’s hood is over the cord. Please check your appearance in the mirror before Mass, making sure all snaps are snapped, and everything is in place. 4. Light the candles 10 minutes prior to mass. Please do not use matches. The candle lighter is on votive candle stand. If the Easter candle is not lit and needs to be, ask the priest or adult to do this. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO LIGHT THE CANDLE YOURSELF. 5. One server will carry the processional cross (which you will need to get from its stand by the altar.) The other server will carry OUT the processional cross. 6.     Open Church - Everyday Growing from Open Church Sunday to Open Church Everyday Building on the success of the annual Open Church Sunday held in June, St Albans Diocese is now encouraging parishes to open their churches as often as possible throughout the year instead of just a single day. This year the diocese is not organising an Open Church Sunday and is promoting Open Church Everyday so that churches are available for people to visit and to sit and pray. Open Church Everyday The Diocese of St Albans is encouraging PCCs to consider opening churches as often as possible in daylight hours. If we unlock our churches, people will visit them and some will experience God’s presence there. People want to go to their local church to visit and pray, especially in times of personal and national tragedy. Read on for advice on how to open you church building and how to communicate that is it home to a living church. There are also examples of how to use features of the church building to teach people about Christianity, such as photo of a family at their baby’s Christening, with a brief explanation of baptism. The Bishop of St Albans wrote: “Such initiatives are unlikely in themselves to ‘make new disciples’ but they will sow the seeds and build links so that those who are interested can find out more.
