Taking a qualitative approach, this study explored players of fighting games: competitive games of one-on-one combat. Specifically, it combined observations at the Evolution fighting game tournament in July, 2009 and in-depth interviews with fighting game enthusiasts. In addition, three groups of college students with varying histories and experiences with games were observed playing both competitive and cooperative games together.

This thesis traces machinima, films created in real-time from videogame engines, from the exterior toward the interior, focusing on the manner in which the medium functions as a tool for marginalized expression in the face of commercial and corporate inclusion. I contextualize machinima in three distinct contexts: first, machinima as historiography, which allows its minority creators to articulate and distribute their interpretation of national and international events without mass media interference. Second, machinima as a form of fan fiction, in which filmmakers blur the line between consumers and producers, a feature which is slowly being warped as videogame studios begin to incorporate machinima into marketing techniques. Abstract This study adapts the extensively used GLOBE cultural survey to compare different esports community cultures. Because of their arcade origins, the fighting games community (FGC) regards themselves as culturally unique and has many customs not found in other esports communities. This study found that the FGC and other esports communities differ in the specific cultural dimensions of Assertiveness, Humane Orientation, Institutional Collectivism, and Power Distance. They were similar in the Performance Orientation dimension. 2 Introduction Esports is defined as professional, competitive gaming, where players or teams compete against one another in organized competition for championship titles or money (Newzoo, 2019). There are many different game genres within esports, such as battle royales, first-person shooters, card games, multiplayer online battle arenas (MOBAs), and fighting games (Hitt, 2019). The top four esports games of 2019, by prize money, were Fortnite, Dota 2, Counter- Strike: Global Offensive, and PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds (Hitt, 2019). Global esports market revenue is significant, valued at $1.1 billion in 2019 (Pannekeet, 2019). One of the least profitable esports genres is fighting games, played by a niche group called the fighting games community (FGC), which first emerged in arcades.

    Street Fighter V: It’s About Capcom-unity Sony and Capcom are set to take the fighting game community to the Promised Land. “Fighting games are dying.” It’s said time and again. With dwindling sales and a limited appeal compared to AAA games of other genres, many believe fighting games are on their deathbed. Yet despite their declining sales figures, fighting games have created one of the most passionate communities in all of gaming: the fighting game community. That, in no small part, is down to the success of Street Fighter. As Matthew Edwards [fighting games community manager for Capcom UK] states, “Street Fighter has been a mainstay of competitive gaming ever since Guile threw his first Sonic Boom.” Since Street Fighter II’s release in 1991 everything has changed. Now, fighting games are facing their biggest challenge to date. Low sales means less developers are willing to invest in fighting games and the genre could potentially end up as dead as the text adventure. At the same time, however, the fighting game community is in full bloom. As Justin Wong [professional fighting game player] states, “[The tournament scene] has grown substantially. Because of streaming and new technology, the numbers of tournament competitors and spectators has increased significantly.” While the games struggle to sell, the scene grows exponentially. Capcom fully understand that for Street Fighter V to succeed, they need to work with the fighting game community. “Capcom is committed to growing the community and giving the tournament players a real incentive to push the game further,” says Edwards.
