St. Therese Parish Bulletin March 28, 2021 The Faith Community of ST. THERESE OF LISIEUX CATHOLIC CHURCH 2020 91st STREET KENOSHA, WI 53143 (262) 694-4695 VISIT US AT OUR PARISH WEBSITE: www.st-therese-kenosha.org https://www.facebook.com/ st.therese.kenosha/ OUR PARISH MISSION We are a welcoming Christian family committed to Catholic values, responding to the call of Christ revealed in the diversity of human need. We practice a conscious, living, active faith in a community whose source of strength is the Eucharist. Miraculous Prayer to the Little Flower O Little flower of Jesus, ever con- soling troubled souls with heavenly graces, in our unfailing interces- sions I place my confident trust. From the heart of our Divine Savior, petition the blessings of which I stand in greatest need...........Shower upon me your promised roses of virtue and grace, Dear St. Therese, so that swiftly advancing in sanctity and perfect love of neighbor, I may someday receive the crown of life eternal. Amen March 28, 2021 Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord Welcome to St. Therese of Lisieux Catholic Church in Kenosha, Wisconsin 2 The Crucifixion of Our Lord After the anguish and desolation of His agony in the Garden, after the betrayal of Judas, the arrest, the interrogations of Annas, Caiaphas, Herod and Pilate, after the triple denial of Peter, the bloody scourging and crowning with thorns—all the while being ridiculed, blasphemed and spat upon—after all this, Jesus, our meek and humble Lord and God, who is Love, took up His heavy Cross, carried it to Calvary and was crucified. On the Cross, Jesus, though united to the Father, was deprived of all divine consolation. In the depths of His pain, He cried out: “Eloi, Eloi, lamma sabacthani? - “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” (Mk. 15:34). The crucifixion shows Christians not only the effect that our sins have on Our Lord, but also the depths of His infinite love and lengths that He will go to save us from our sins, that we may be with Him in eternity. After Our Lord’s death, the veil of the Temple was rent in two, the earth quaked, graves were opened, “and many bodies of the saints that had slept arose” (Mt. 27:51-52). Having seen these things, the centurion said, “Indeed this was the Son of God” (Mt. 27:54). Prayer of Pope Leo XIII to St. Joseph to be said after the Rosary: A Prayer for Our Times "To you, O Blessed Joseph, we come in our trials, and having asked the help of your most holy spouse, we con- fidently ask your patronage also. Through that sacred bond of charity which united you to the Immaculate Virgin Mother of God and through the fatherly love with which you embraced the Child Jesus, we humbly beg you to look graciously upon the beloved inheritance which Jesus Christ purchased by his blood, and to aid us in our ne- cessities with your power and strength. “O most provident guardian of the Holy Family, defend the chosen children of Jesus Christ. Most beloved fa- ther, dispel the evil of falsehood and sin. Our most mighty protector, graciously assist us from heaven in our strug- gle with the powers of darkness. And just as you once saved the Child Jesus from mortal danger, so now defend God’s Holy Church from the snares of her enemies and from all adversity. “Shield each one of us by your constant protection, so that, supported by your example and your help, we may be able to live a virtuous life, to die a holy death, and to obtain eternal happiness in heaven. Amen." This Year’s Grammys: A Shameful Display of Pop Culture Jonathan Van Maren (LifeSiteNews, 3/16/21) March 16, 2021 (LifeSiteNews) — In keeping with my lifelong tradition of not watching the Grammys, I once again did not watch them this year. For this year’s Grammys, our cultural elites outdid themselves. Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion staged what closely resembled a live sex performance replete with stripper poles, backup dancers wearing only thongs and lingerie, and much flailing about with very little clothing. At one point, they twerked in bed together. This was aired on CBS, and these singers are popular among young women. Young men, unsurprisingly, greatly appreci- ate this in a chauvinist, ungentlemanly sort of way. Back in the good old days, feminist heads would be exploding and the right sort of cancel culture would be kicking into gear. But we’re more enlightened now. (It bears mentioning that our superiors waltzed the red carpet maskless — those sorts of rules are for the little people.) The National Center on Sexual Exploitation (NCOSE) released a statement condemning the performance: “In a perform- ance that could have been cut from a hardcore pornography film, CBS allowed a glamorization of stripping and prostitution to be broadcast in front of a national audience — a portion of which were children — for no other reason than for TV rat- ings,” stated senior vice president and executive director Dawn Hawkins. “Despite the ‘popularity’ of the song performed by Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion, CBS should have never allowed this kind of explicit performance to happen at the Gram- mys.” Further, Hawkins stated: “Prostitution and stripping are never empowering for women, as they set up systems that exploit and oppress women. CBS has contributed to furthering the sexual exploitation of women and contributed to the ‘normalization’ of porn culture.” It goes without saying that most of those selling their bodies to men are desperately sad and close to broke, spending the money they’ve received for a pound of flesh for the drugs they need to survive the life they’re trapped in. • The Gospel of Mark
The Gospel of Mark A Living Word Independent Bible Study The Gospel of Mark Part 44 Mark 16:1-8 A Living Word Independent Bible Study The earliest manuscripts of Mark’s Gospel that have been found end with the eight verses in today’s lesson. Later manuscripts include a variety of additional endings that are typically set apart from the rest of the Gospel in modern translations. These endings will be the subject of the final lesson in this study. Mark 16:1-8 ( NIV) The eight verses to be covered in this session contain Mark’s telling INTRODUCTION of the events of Easter morning. It should be noted that each of the four Gospels describes the events of Easter morning somewhat differently. Just as four witnesses to one event may give their testimony to the event somewhat differently, the Gospel writers record the events somewhat differently as well. Early in its history, the Christian church found value in keeping all four Gospels as part of its tradition, rather than attempting to consolidate the four Gospels into a single authoritative account of the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus. While these variations are not unimportant, in a study of a SINGLE Gospel, it is helpful to try to understand the perspective of that particular writer. “Sabbath was over” Mark 16:1 ( NIV) This implies that it was sometime after 6:00 PM on Saturday evening that the women went to purchase spices. When the Sabbath was They would not have been permitted to “work” – over, Mary Magdalene, purchasing or preparing perfumes and ointments – ON the Mary the mother of Sabbath itself.

Sporting his signature sock/slippers combo and a mic in his hand, the Nigerian- American storyteller took the stage Friday (June 21) to perform some of his most revolutionary and captivating tracks. There’s the lyrical strike that is “Ten Toes” featuring Luke Whitney and “Against the Grain” made popular from his #GetTwistedSundays series, a keen exploration of Houston. With a new batch of ears and hearts open to his music, the Nigerian-American rapper is at ease with his new purpose. ADVERTISING “I understand my purpose now. I understand that to do what I’m doing now is all of my life,” Nwigwe tells VIBE before taking the stage for McDonald’s Black & Positively Golden event which showcases music’s ability to continue the cultural narratives of the Black experience in America. ADVERTISEMENT Before he was shining on BET Cyphers, performing at the Roots Picnic or delivering projects like Three Originals, Nwigwe had dreams of entering the NFL. Those plans were redirected after a physical injury during his senior year at the University of North Texas. The incident served as a catalyst for the rapper to transform his energy into purposeful rap for his hometown, Houston.

  • The Historical Value of the Fourth Gospel. Iv
HISTORICAL VALUE OF THE FOURTH GOSPEL 431 a man of his own'people and age, with all the limitations which that involved, than Christian theologians generally have been prepared to concede. But that he held notispiritual and moral, but often magical views of the sacraments seems to the writer to require far more conclusive evidence than yet has been furnished. That he was a sacramen~arian in the modern sense of the word, the treatment of the Jewish law, and especi ally of circumcision, in the Epistle to the Galatians makes it quite impossible to believe. How could the man who de clared that both circumcision and uncircumcision availed nothing, only faith energising in love, assign superior efficacy for the Christian life to any " weak and beggarly rudiments " (Gal. iv. 9) ~ It is surely to miss his intention to suppose that his argument is not directed against ritualism generally, but against the combination of Jewish with Christian ritualism. He who laid all emphasis on the sufficiency of faith alone to bring each believer into living union with God in Christ, thus giving the spirit of adoption and freedom of access, was no sacerdotalist. What would he have said of the figment of apostolic succession, who so vehemently claimed that he was an apostle, " not from man, neither through man, but through Jesus Christ, and God the Father" 1 We do best to view the Church with Paul from the standpoint of the faith, hope, and love that are in Christ the Lord. ALFRED E. GARVIE. THE HISTORICAL VALUE OF THE FOURTH GOSPEL.

  • Giotto's Fleeing Apostle
Giotto’s Fleeing Apostle PAUL BAROLSKY —In memory of Andrew Ladis Ihave previously suggested in these pages that in the Humanities, to which this journal is dedicated, the doctrine of ut pictura poesis dominates our thinking to such an extent that we often make false or over-simplified equa- tions between texts and images, even though there is never an exact identity between words, which tell, and mute im- ages, which show. The falsifying equation between text and image is a corrupting factor in what is called “iconography,” the discipline that seeks, however imperfectly, to give verbal meaning to wordless images. Texts may suggest connota- tions or implications of images, but images never render the exact denotations of these texts. I would like to suggest here a single example of such a delicate if not fragile link between text and image—a case in which the artist begins with a text but transforms it into something other than what the words of the text describe. My example is found in the art of one of the great masters in the history of European art. I speak of Giotto. Of all the personages that Giotto painted in the Scrovegni Chapel, one of the most mysterious is the forbidding, hooded figure with his back to us, who clutches a drapery in his clenched fist in the left foreground of the Arrest of Jesus (fig. 1). This ominous figure leads us down a fascinating path. In his magisterial book Giotto’s O, Andrew Ladis ob- serves that the “anonymous henchman” has in his “rigid grasp” the robe of an “inconstant and indeterminate apostle who flees .

  • Beyoncé Feminism, Rihanna Womanism: Popular Music and Black Feminist Theory AFR 330, WGS 335 Flags: Cultural Diversity in the US, Global Cultures Spring 2020
The University of Texas at Austin Beyoncé Feminism, Rihanna Womanism: Popular Music and Black Feminist Theory AFR 330, WGS 335 Flags: Cultural Diversity in the US, Global Cultures Spring 2020 Prof: Dr. Traci-Ann Wint Course Description Beyoncé’s fifth live album Homecoming chronicled her performance as the first black woman to headline the Coachella festival. As with Lemonade, the film and performance put Beyoncé’s music in conversation with luminaries such as Toni Morrison and W.E.B. DuBois. Beyoncé’s contemporaries Rihanna and Lizzo similarly center black culture in their music and are unapologetic about their work’s engagement with issues specific to black womanhood. By engaging the music and videos of these and other Black femme recording artists as popular, accessible expressions of African American and Caribbean feminisms, this course explores their contribution to black feminist thought and their impact on global audiences. Beginning with close analysis of these artists’ songs and videos, we read their work in conversation with black feminist theoretical works that engage issues of race, location, violence, economic opportunity, sexuality, standards of beauty, and creative self-expression. The course aims to provide students with an introduction to media studies methodology as well as black feminist theory, and to challenge us to close the gap between popular and academic expressions of black women’s concerns. Course Goals The course aims to provide students with an introduction to Black feminism, Black feminist thought and womanism through an examination of popular culture. At the end of the course students should have a firm grasp on Black Feminist and Womanist theory, techniques in pop culture and media analysis and should be comfortable with the production of scholarly work for a popular audience.

Page 1 of 14 http://www.amatterofmind.us/ PIERRE BEAUDRY’S GALACTIC PARKING LOT INTRODUCTION: A PRAYER ON CANVAS All four Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John have reported on the prediction that Jesus made during the Last Supper, stating that Peter would disown him three times before the night was over, and all four mentioned the event of that denial in one form or another. If ever there was a religious subject that was made popular for painters in the Netherlands during the first half of the seventeenth century, it was the denial of Peter. More than twenty European artists of that period, most of them were Dutch, chose to depict the famous biblical scene, but none of them touched on the subject in the profound axiomatic manner that Rembrandt did. Rembrandt chose to go against the public opinion view of Peter’s denial and addressed the fundamental issue of the axiomatic change that takes place in the mind of an individual at the moment when he is confronted with the truth of having to risk his own life for the benefit of another. This report has three sections: 1. THE STORY OF THE NIGHT WHEN PETER’S LIFE WAS CHANGED 2. THE TURBULENT SENSUAL NOISE BEHIND THE DIFFERENT POPULAR PAINTINGS OF PETER’S DENIAL 3.

Coleman II t the end of a decade, and approaching a new, the dominating pres- ence of hip hop and R&B is operating on a new foundation – social Amedia. The influence an artist has on pop culture and music quality almost always coincides with the artist’s presence on social media. When looking back at the songs that will form the popular music for the 2010 decade, such as Drake’s 2016 single Hotline Bling, or this year’s Old Town Road, these songs can’t be mentioned without noting their respective memes and the social media commotion that trailed these songs for months after their releases. The unification of social media and hip hop music is the source of influence in which established and emerging artists benefit. When a song is popular on social media, the artist has all they need to establish a fan base even before recording a full-length album or releasing another single. This year has been the biggest example of rappers emerging from social media: Megan Thee Stallion off the Hot Girl Summer hashtag and Lil Nas X with the buzz of Old Town Road stemming from video-sharing app TikTok earlier this year. When it comes to The influence that these songs have had on pop music throughout 2019 the careers of artists is an example of black social media’s influence on pop culture.
