    In Defense of Rap Music: Not Just Beats, Rhymes, Sex, and Violence THESIS Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Master of Arts Degree in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Crystal Joesell Radford, BA Graduate Program in Education The Ohio State University 2011 Thesis Committee: Professor Beverly Gordon, Advisor Professor Adrienne Dixson Copyrighted by Crystal Joesell Radford 2011 Abstract This study critically analyzes rap through an interdisciplinary framework. The study explains rap‟s socio-cultural history and it examines the multi-generational, classed, racialized, and gendered identities in rap. Rap music grew out of hip-hop culture, which has – in part – earned it a garnering of criticism of being too “violent,” “sexist,” and “noisy.” This criticism became especially pronounced with the emergence of the rap subgenre dubbed “gangsta rap” in the 1990s, which is particularly known for its sexist and violent content. Rap music, which captures the spirit of hip-hop culture, evolved in American inner cities in the early 1970s in the South Bronx at the wake of the Civil Rights, Black Nationalist, and Women‟s Liberation movements during a new technological revolution. During the 1970s and 80s, a series of sociopolitical conscious raps were launched, as young people of color found a cathartic means of expression by which to describe the conditions of the inner-city – a space largely constructed by those in power. Rap thrived under poverty, police repression, social policy, class, and gender relations (Baker, 1993; Boyd, 1997; Keyes, 2000, 2002; Perkins, 1996; Potter, 1995; Rose, 1994, 2008; Watkins, 1998).

    International Journal of Communication 15(2021), 1000–1020 1932–8036/20210005 Keeping the Gates on Twitter: Interactivity and Sourcing Habits of Lebanese Traditional Media CLAUDIA KOZMAN1 Lebanese American University, Lebanon RALUCA COZMA Kansas State University, USA Using gatekeeping and sourcing frameworks, this study content analyzes Lebanese media tweets to examine the relationship between the use of sources and tweet popularity in a media environment marked by political parallelism and high diversity. The study revealed the media’s tendency to rely almost exclusively on governmental officials and other political elites. Official and governmental sources also dominated tweets discussing news more so than other types. Tweets quoting officials, however, were not related to more favorites, retweets, or comments. Newspapers exhibited an increased tendency to lean on officials compared with television stations. Newspapers also seemed to be keener on keeping their own information flowing throughout by linking to their own outlets. The analysis points to traditional gatekeeping practices, evident in the use of the platform as a marketing tool to promote outlets’ own content, to source governmental and party officials and journalists, and to discuss the news. The unraveling of the hierarchies between mass media and media consumers (Hermida et al., 2012) brought with it changes in the media ecology, thus challenging the power of traditional news outlets to make and deliver news (Ahmed, Cho, & Jaidka, 2019).

Price Music Review Kanye West, Jesus Is King US 2019, Def Jam Recordings As any emcee should, Kanye West has developed and matured as a produc- er and lyricist since his 2004 triple-platinum debut project, College Dropout. West’s Gospel project, Jesus Is King, is his ninth studio project and the fol- low-up to his June 2018 release, Ye. After delays, Jesus Is King was released on 25 October 2019. For West, openly talking about Jesus in his music is not new, for he rocked the mainstream hip-hop world in 2004 when he re- leased the single “Jesus Walks”, the final single to be released from College Dropout. Jesus Is King features eleven tracks totaling 27 minutes and 4 seconds, which is short for either a secular or gospel hip-hop project.1 Interestingly, significant changes were made to the track listing order on the album. Kim Kardashian-West announced the tracks and order in August 2019, but the list- ing and order released by Kanye West in October 2019 were markedly differ- ent.2 Such a change could suggest an earlier lack of clarity on what the album was going to be. West did promise that Jesus Is King would be “fully immersed in religion […] with lyrics about God, being saved, and minimal cursing”.3 Jesus Is King employs several aspects of Black Christian worship, from mass choir to melodic organ. West takes the best of the Black gospel tradition, in- fusing it with his own lyrical genius to proclaim what God has done for him, which is best expressed on the track “God Is”, a remake of the classic spiritual.

    The University of Texas at Austin Beyoncé Feminism, Rihanna Womanism: Popular Music and Black Feminist Theory AFR 330, WGS 335 Flags: Cultural Diversity in the US, Global Cultures Spring 2020 Prof: Dr. Traci-Ann Wint Course Description Beyoncé’s fifth live album Homecoming chronicled her performance as the first black woman to headline the Coachella festival. As with Lemonade, the film and performance put Beyoncé’s music in conversation with luminaries such as Toni Morrison and W.E.B. DuBois. Beyoncé’s contemporaries Rihanna and Lizzo similarly center black culture in their music and are unapologetic about their work’s engagement with issues specific to black womanhood. By engaging the music and videos of these and other Black femme recording artists as popular, accessible expressions of African American and Caribbean feminisms, this course explores their contribution to black feminist thought and their impact on global audiences. Beginning with close analysis of these artists’ songs and videos, we read their work in conversation with black feminist theoretical works that engage issues of race, location, violence, economic opportunity, sexuality, standards of beauty, and creative self-expression. The course aims to provide students with an introduction to media studies methodology as well as black feminist theory, and to challenge us to close the gap between popular and academic expressions of black women’s concerns. Course Goals The course aims to provide students with an introduction to Black feminism, Black feminist thought and womanism through an examination of popular culture. At the end of the course students should have a firm grasp on Black Feminist and Womanist theory, techniques in pop culture and media analysis and should be comfortable with the production of scholarly work for a popular audience.
