Type of feeder (Chewing, sucking, etc.): Larvae: Chewing Host plant/s: The variegated cutworm can be found in gardens on potatoes, peas, cabbage, lettuce, and tomato. It can also be found on alfalfa as well as clover in a field or pasture environment. Description of Damage (larvae and adults): The cutworms climb onto the plants and begin eating foliage and stems. Since they climb onto and reside on the plant, the damage can be quite severe. Later instar larvae can burrow underground and can damage plants by cutting them off at the surface of the soil. The larvae often feed at night. References: Cranshaw, W. (2004). Chapter Three: Leaf Chewers – Variegated Cutworm. In Garden insects of North America: The ultimate guide to backyard bugs. (pp. 134).
