Far North Line Investment Is on the Right Track
Far North Line investment is on the right track February 13, 2019 Network Rail has completed an £11m, two and a half-year project to renew and replace sections of track at 59 sites along the Far North Line in the north of Scotland. Work included replacing a total of 36 miles of rail and more than 11,000 sleepers, as well as in some cases full renewal of sections of track on some of the most remote stretches of railway in the country. The upgraded rail will improve reliability and comfort for passengers as well as delivering a reduction in future maintenance requirements. In addition to the logistical challenges of working in some extremely remote locations on the single-track railway, the delivery of work also endured the challenge of winter weather in the far north of Scotland – overcoming both a washout of a section of track at Loch Luichart following heavy rain as well as the winter blast from the beast from the east. When storm floods caused the track to ‘wash-out’ at Loch Luichart in August 2017, the Network Rail team with contractor Stobart Rail, were able to divert plant and resources working locally on the project to the site of the damaged track. After clearing debris from the damaged area, 300 tonnes of ballast was replaced and the track stabilised; a rapid response which ensured that the line could quickly re-open for passenger service. One of the most significant sections of work was at Thurso where the project renewed more than 6.5miles of track between the town’s station and Georgemas junction – removing more than 40 track faults on this section alone. -

RUX congratulates Network Rail (NR) for delivering £98million of vital improvements over the late August Bank Holiday weekend. Blessed with fine albeit very hot weather, a 10,500 strong team worked round the clock to finish 448 projects on time, allowing a normal service to resume on the Tuesday. Some projects such as track renewal and the transfer of signalling control will have an immediate benefit; some will enable an improved timetable in December, while others have laid the ground for future developments. Caithness County Council RECORDS’ IDENTITY STATEMENT Reference number: CC Alternative reference number: Title: Caithness County Council Dates of creation: 1720-1975 Level of description: Fonds Extent: 10 bays of shelving Format: Mainly paper RECORDS’ CONTEXT Name of creators: Caithness County Council Administrative history: 1889-1930 County Councils were established under the Local Government (Scotland) Act 1889. They assumed the powers of the Commissioners of Supply, and of Parochial Boards, excluding those in Burghs, under the Public Health Acts. The County Councils also assumed the powers of the County Road Trusts, and as a consequence were obliged to appoint County Road Boards. Powers of the former Police Committees of the Commissioners were transferred to Standing Joint Committees, composed of County Councillors, Commissioners and the Sheriff of the county. They acted as the police committee of the counties - the executive bodies for the administration of police. The Act thus entrusted to the new County Councils most existing local government functions outwith the burghs except the poor law, education, mental health and licensing. Each county was divided into districts administered by a District Committee of County Councillors. Funded directly by the County Councils, the District Committees were responsible for roads, housing, water supply and public health. Nucleus: The Nuclear and Caithness Archive 1 Provision was also made for the creation of Special Districts to be responsible for the provision of services including water supply, drainage, lighting and scavenging. 1930-1975 The Local Government Act (Scotland) 1929 abolished the District Committees and Parish Councils and transferred their powers and duties to the County Councils and District Councils (see CC/6). -

Far North Line Review Team Consolidation Report “It is essential we make the most of this important asset for passengers, for sustainable freight transport, and for the communities and businesses along the whole route.” Fergus Ewing, 16 December 2016 August 2019 Remit Fergus Ewing MSP, Cabinet Secretary for Rural Economy, established the Far North Line Review Team in December 2016 with a remit to identify potential opportunities to improve connectivity, operational performance and journey time on the line. Membership The Review Team comprised senior representatives from the railway industry (Transport Scotland, Network Rail, ScotRail) as well as relevant stakeholders (HITRANS, Highland Council, HIE, Caithness Transport Forum and Friends of the Far North Line). The Team has now concluded and this report reviews the Team’s achievements and sets out activities and responsibilities for future years. Report This report provides a high-level overview of achievements, work-in-progress and future opportunities. Achievements to date: Safety and Improved Journey Time In support of safety and improved journey time we: 1. Implemented Stage 1 of Level Crossing Upgrade by installing automatic barrier prior to closing the crossing by 2024. 2. Upgraded two level crossings to full barriers. 3 4 3. Started a programme of improved animal 6 6 fencing and removed lineside vegetation to 6 reduce the attractiveness of the line to livestock and deer. 4. Established six new full-time posts in Helmsdale to address fencing and vegetation issues along the line. 1 5. Removed the speed restriction near Chapelton Farm to allow a linespeed of 75mph. 6. Caithness and Sutherland Proposed Local Development Plan Committee Version November, 2015 Proposed CaSPlan The Highland Council Foreword Foreword Foreword to be added after PDI committee meeting The Highland Council Proposed CaSPlan About this Proposed Plan About this Proposed Plan The Caithness and Sutherland Local Development Plan (CaSPlan) is the second of three new area local development plans that, along with the Highland-wide Local Development Plan (HwLDP) and Supplementary Guidance, will form the Highland Council’s Development Plan that guides future development in Highland. The Plan covers the area shown on the Strategy Map on page 3). CaSPlan focuses on where development should and should not occur in the Caithness and Sutherland area over the next 10-20 years. Along the north coast the Pilot Marine Spatial Plan for the Pentland Firth and Orkney Waters will also influence what happens in the area. This Proposed Plan is the third stage in the plan preparation process. It has been approved by the Council as its settled view on where and how growth should be delivered in Caithness and Sutherland. However, it is a consultation document which means you can tell us what you think about it. It will be of particular interest to people who live, work or invest in the Caithness and Sutherland area. In preparing this Proposed Plan, the Highland Council have held various consultations. These included the development of a North Highland Onshore Vision to support growth of the marine renewables sector, Charrettes in Wick and Thurso to prepare whole-town visions and a Call for Sites and Ideas, all followed by a Main Issues Report and Additional Sites and Issues consultation. -

A vast expanse of blanket bog, sheltered straths, moorland and mountain covers much of Caithness and Sutherland. Known as The Flow Country, or the Flows, it is one of Scotland’s most important natural resources. Blanket bog is a rare type of peatland which forms only in cool places with plenty of rain and covers the landscape like a blanket. SCOTTISH STATUTORY INSTRUMENTS 2000 No. 32 Scrabster (Inner Harbour Development) Harbour Revision Order 2000 PART I PRELIMINARY Citation, commencement and extent 1.—(1) This Order may be cited as the Scrabster (Inner Harbour Development) HarbourRevision Order 1999 and shall come into force on 29th February 2000. (2) The Scrabster Harbour Acts and Orders 1841 to 1998 and this Order may be cited together as the Scrabster Harbour Acts and Orders 1841 to 2000. (3) This Order extends to Scotland only.
