South Carolina is not a swing state. Solidly Republican, it will vote for Mitt Romney by a large margin this Novem- ber. With so many other states hanging in the balance, Team Romney doesn’t need to spend any time campaigning in South Carolina. So why would Gov. Chris Christie, a top Romney supporter and surrogate as well as the GOP convention’s keynote speaker, take time out of an extremely busy sched- ule to visit the South Carolina delegation at the Republican convention in Tampa? It wasn’t easy; the delegates stayed in a hotel far, far away from the GOP gathering site downtown. But Christie made the trek. The answer might have something to do with the fact that South Carolina is a huge- ly important state in the early presidential primaries. “We pick presidents,” South Carolina Republicans like to say, and indeed, with the exception of Newt Gin- grich this year, every winner of their pri- mary has gone on to capture the GOP nom- Public Forum ination. DRIEFONTEIN, South Africa (AP) — In a speech punctuated by cheers of thousands of miners and the blowing of whistles and vuvuzelas, firebrand politi- cian Julius Malema called Tuesday for a national strike in all of South Africa’s mines, encouraging a step-up of a strike that has already halted production at several plat- inum and gold mines. Some 60 miles away, 8,000 more striking miners and their followers, shad- owed by police in armored cars and helicopters, marched to a hospital to see some of the 190 miners who say they beaten and tortured in police custody. A mining company security guard wearing a bulletproof vest told reporters the patients had been evacuated for safety reasons and a phalanx of police blocked the marchers from the hospital. The scene in Marikana, northwest of Johannesburg, was peaceful but tense. Miner unrest has become a central issue in South Africa since police shot and killed 34 striking miners and wounded 78 on Aug. 16 at Marikana, a platinum mine owned by Lonmin PLC. Lonmin said in a state- ment Tuesday that only 3 percent of workers had shown up at the shafts. “Lonmin condemns the ongoing intimidation and threats to life and property. No business can operate in an environment where threats and intimidation are the order of the day. The contin- uing efforts of a minority to keep the mine closed through threats of violence now pose a real and significant threat to jobs,” the London-registered company said. Malema told striking min- ers at a gold mine near Driefontein that this nation’s critically important mining industry should be stopped in its tracks to force the removal of the leadership of the National Union of Mineworkers, which is cozy with the power elite including South African President Jacob Zuma, Malema’s archenemy. NEW YORK (AP) — As hockey prepared for its first work stoppage since the 2004-05 sea- son was wiped out, the NHL Players Association planned to challenge a lockout before the labor board in Quebec. A hearing before Alberta’s board was can- celed the night before when the NHL with- drew, The Canadian Press reported. The moves, if successful, could force teams to pay players on the Montreal Canadiens, Calgary Flames and Edmonton Oilers during a work stoppage. The sport’s labor contract expires at mid- night Saturday night, and a lockout appears certain. It would be the league’s fourth work stoppage since 1992. Donald Fehr, who took over as union head two years ago, said his players are resigned to a work stoppage, which would follow lockouts last year in the NFL and the NBA. “A lot of them think that pure and simply they were taken advantage of last time and the owners want to take advantage of them again,” he said during an interview Monday at the union’s New York office. “It sort of looks exactly what happened in hockey the last time and exactly how it played out in basketball and football so far. But I hope not.” Industry revenue has grown from $2.1 bil- lion to $3.3 billion annually under the expiring deal. Owners asked players to cut their share of hockey related revenue from 57 to 43 percent, then modified their offer to 46 percent during a six-year deal. Players are concerned manage- ment hasn’t addressed its problems by re- examining the teams’ revenue-sharing format. The sides haven’t had a full bargaining ses- sion since Aug. 31 and the strife is threatening regular-season openers scheduled to start Oct. 11. “It seems to be the direction things are going, but there’s still time if they want to talk,”Fehr said. None of the Boston Bruins who attended a charity golf tournament in Bolton, Mass., on Monday were optimistic that the full season could be salvaged. “I hear November, December and New Year’s,” Bruins goaltender Tuukka Rask said.
