Provenance These books and papers were donated to Special Collections and College Archives upon Gilbert’s retirement in 2014. Additional volumes on economics, ethics, etc. were given to Musselman Library’s circulating collection. The intention of Professor Gilbert was to create an archival collection that reflected the development of his courses and their liberal arts breadth.

Biographical Note Professor Daniel R. Gilbert, Jr. began teaching at Gettysburg College in 1999 when he left the Management Department at Bucknell University. Upon becoming the first David M. LeVan Professor of Ethics and Management at Gettysburg, Gilbert taught courses on management and ethics, but also used creative coursework with themes like big ideas of the 1950s, water systems in the American West, and baseball to illustrate the social and legal responsibilities of organizations.

Gilbert earned a B.A. from Dickinson College in 1971, an M.B.A. from Lehigh University in 1978, and a Ph.D. from the University of in 1987. He gained executive experience at NCR Corporation in , Minnesota, and Canada before settling into a career in higher education. While at Gettysburg College, Gilbert served on many faculty committees, as well as the Middle States Reaccreditation Committee and a Task Force on Academic Advising and Mentoring. He was the winner of the inaugural Dr. Robert E. Dutton, Class of 1946, Memorial Mentorship Award. Gilbert retired in 2014 and moved to Southern with his family.

Scope and Content Notes The Daniel R. Gilbert Papers, aka Dan Gilbert’s Bookshelf, is a collection designed by Prof. Gilbert with the intention of documenting the development of his signature Organization and Management Studies (OMS) courses. Because book selection is crucial to the design of his courses, Gilbert requested that Special Collections and College Archives retain integral texts with this manuscript collection. The texts in combination with course syllabi and assignments encapsulate the course experience for Gilbert’s classes.

This collection does not contain personal research conducted by Gilbert for his many publications. Hard copies of many of Gilbert’s publications are located in Glibert’s Vertical File in Special Collections and College Archives. His books are available through Musselman Library.
