Many fields have presented themselves for independent research, but as the plan of the work and its limits belonged to the author and not to the editor, I did not feel justified in materially altering either of them.

Until the middle of December last it did not -• to the knowledge of the Publisher of the Director) 1890 that the Publisher of the Directories for the pi ceding years was not to undertake the work on this occa sion. It was, therefore, impossible that the Directory- could appear within weeks of the usual time ; and this, combined with other disadvantages connected with such a late start, made the publication of it a difficult and somewhat hazardous undertaking. Nevertheless, an Annual Directory is such a necessary thing for the con- venience of all classes of the public that the Publisher took the work in hand in the hope that any little short- comings might be overlooked in the fact that a Directory for 1890 had been published at all. The Publisher has to thank the Merchants and others who have so liberally supported him in the way of advertisements, as also the officials of the Societies and other organizations in town for the help they have afforded him in getting up the local information.

The following pages have been published chiefly for those who take an interest in the locality of the ancient and now flourishing town of Arbroath, and also with the view of removing the obscurity which has hitherto involved the history of its once magnificent monasteiy. Among other sources of information the Chartulary of the Abbey is entitled to stand first in rank. The most interesting portions of these monastic writings have been digested and arranged in this volume. An endeavour has thus been made to bring out the points in which they, along with other authentic documents, tend to illustrate the history of the district. In alluding to the history of past times, our ancestors have been allowed as far as possible to appear in their own dress, and speak in their own words. This will account for the number of quotations in the antique style, which may probably render the perusal of some portions of the book a little difficult to readers otherwise well educated.

MDCCCXXXIV. Printed at the CiinaxiciE Office, Dundee, PREFACE. The following pages have been compiled by- Mr. Thomas Keith. The original intention was to give a mere list of the principal inhabi- tants in alphabetical order ; with a few subordi- nate lists and tables connected with the trade of the place. It was thought that this might be accomplished without adding materially to the size or price of former publications of the same description. A very little experience led to a contrary conviction. After the utmost pains had been bestowed in preparing the alphabetical list of names, it was suggested that the occupations and places of residence of many individuals might be inacciu-ately given ; and that it would be pro- per to leave slips at the houses of the inhabitants, inviting them to write upon them their names, occupations, and places of abode, as they wished these to appear in the Directory. By this means upwards of 1500 corrections were made on the list as it was originally prepared ; and had it not been for neglect on the part of some persons to furnish the requisite information, very few errors would have remained.
