Where Knowledge Blossoms August 2021 Where Knowledge Blossoms Hello Island Trees! All through July many of the staff worked very hard to move all of our furniture & materials into our new space and arrange it all into a beautiful, functional library that we cannot wait to share with you! We have a few more tweaks to finish getting it ready and some staff training on some new technology we're introducing and then we should be good to go and we will inform you of our re-opening dates and celebration. Though I do not believe we will be starting in house programming just yet, we should be able to have all other services up and running including our new self-checkout. You should note that the old book drop on the Farmedge Rd side of the library is closed and the new book drop accessed via the parking lot (but not the drive through) is open. Until we are fully open to the public though, fines will continue to be waived. We welcome our new Board Trustee Greg Kelty *see pic below. We congratulate him on joining us and taking on this responsibility and hope he will enjoy working with us. At first, our First Ever Cutest Pet Contest seemed in jeopardy with only 3 submissions. After a gentle reminder (from yours truly), we now have approximately 100 submissions. We'd like to thank all of our pet parents who submitted their pet babies and ask for patience as we design the voting survey. We will send an email blast and we will post a link to it on Facebook as well! We appreciate your participation in voting for your favorite pet even if you did not submit a picture. Keep an eye out on our Facebook Page for Staff Birthday Alerts! I've started posting little birthday cards for staff members as their birthdays come up. They work so hard and it's been such a crazy and hectic time specifically at the library between Covid-19 while trying to move I thought they could use some extra shouting out! Kail, PhD ABSTRACT Ideological partisans in the United States are increasingly “sorting” themselves along cultural lines, from the cable news stations they watch to the chain restaurants they prefer. How do partisans seem to “know” how to sort themselves along ideological lines in cultural realms that offer no obvious political cues? To investigate this question, I look to the realm of narrative television, where conservatives and liberals have certain unique favorite programs despite the programs lacking any overt political content. I employ a quantitative content analysis to demonstrate that the substance of these polarizing shows relate to the social traits of curiosity, conformity, relativism, dogmatism, tribalism, vigilance, and chastity, which have previously been demonstrated to correspond to political ideology.

It will consider how queer lives are presented to us in the media, and it attends to ways in which these presentations might influence and shape our knowledge of queer subjects. The primary research questions addressed in this thesis include: Do sites of everyday influence continue to promote stereotypes? What does this mean for homosexual individual? And if such sites do promote such stereotypes, can sex education curriculum attempt to undo media bias? To address these questions, the thesis considers popular representations circulating in the media. It considers these representations in light of the author’s own experiences as a gay man. The critical thinking that emerges from this act is made possible by engaging with multiple pieces of content, as well as the work of queer theorists such as Sedgwick and Butler and Halperin. Fisher Center for the Performing Arts at Bard College Chair Jeanne Donovan Fisher It’s a pleasure to welcome you to the Fisher Center for the world premiere of Dan Hurlin’s President Leon Botstein Demolishing Everything with Amazing Speed, based on four puppet plays by the Italian presents futurist artist Fortunato Depero (1892–1960). The production is part of the annual Bard SummerScape Festival, which this year celebrates the life and work of Giacomo Puccini. Depero and Puccini were contemporaries, though their aesthetic interests could hardly World Premiere have been more opposite. The futurists were self-declared revolutionaries, who took inspiration from the technological advances of the early 20th century to imagine an art of the future, celebrating new frontiers of ingenuity and possibility. For Depero and his DEMOLISHING allies, Puccini represented the decedent past, his grand operas mired in a neoclassical dependence on psychology and emotion. The futurists strove to create a dehumanized art that celebrated speed, automation, and mechanized warfare. They dreamed of theater EVERYTHING WITH and dance that required no human performers, and created plans for elaborate, abstract ballets and plays with machines and marionettes—few of which were ever staged. These included the four scenarios by Depero, known collectively as Dramma Plastico Futurista AMAZING SPEED (Futurist Plastic Theater), which you will see produced for the first time, almost a century after their composition in 1917.     ABSTRACT “A man may have wit, and yet put off his hat” Censorship in Ben Jonson’s Bartholomew Fair and A Tale of a Tub Joshua J. Crain, M.A. Thesis Chairperson: Maurice A. Hunt, Ph.D. Ben Jonson’s career gives us an interesting window into English Renaissance censorship, since a number of his plays were scrutinized, altered, or suppressed by the authorities. In response to the critical consensus that Jonson’s negative view of censorship was mollified over time, this study looks at two comparatively later plays, Bartholomew Fair and A Tale of a Tub, for evidence of Jonson’s continued and even growing antipathy toward censorship. In particular, this study examines the Jonsonian trope of pretended obsequiousness as a pattern for understanding Jonson’s own behavior toward censorious authority. For instance, given the spirited defense of free speech in Bartholomew Fair, we have reason to doubt the sincerity of the Epilogue’s claim to submit to James’s censorship. Likewise, A Tale of a Tub, in both its composition history and thematic treatment of censorship, illustrates Jonson’s antagonistic attitudes toward court involvement in artistic production.
