I contacted them and found they had prod- uced a run ofthese several years back and had just one pair of barrels left. The heads were standard air cooled dog-ear heads. I bought the barrels and a pair ofheads and ordered some rockers from them that were being machined and hardened by another firm. All seemed to be in place for a quick conversion – Oh yes! In 2009 Jenny and I bought a Sports 2-seater Morgan 3- Wheeler. It was fitted with the side valve V-twin JAP DTZ engine. These engines were used to power small railcars, cranes and other industrial plant; strong engines but not very pleasing to the eye. I had heard ofpeople converting them to OHV and decided that I'd do the same. This all started 3 years ago. From an internet search I found that DFC Castings in Doncaster produced barrels and heads for such a conversion, and not I took the barrels and heads to Merlin Engineering, who spec- ialise in machining all things JAP expecting, at the most, a 6 month turn around. However, because ofthe setting up for machining the heads, they waited until they had 14 heads to do to make it economical. One and a halfyears later the machining was done. Meanwhile the firm machining and hardening the batch ofrock- ers had been broken into and the entire batch stolen along with other stuff. I managed to find 4

Studs were made, Mitsu- bishi pistons obtained, solid copper head gaskets cut, little end bushes made and honed to give a nice fit – all going swimmingly well. Assembly could start. I wanted to keep the bottom end standard so that ifthe new barrels were damaged, I could revert to guides (Ford Pinto), valves all OK. Push rod tubes from B&Q (masquerading as ward- robe hanging rails). Now all that remained was to modify the inlet manifold and get Custom Chrome in Nuneaton to make up a pair ofexhaust pipes. Now to start it. Petrol in, good spark flood carbur-ettor, set mixture control and press starter button. No, it didn’t start the side valve configuration. To this end – what were you expecting? no no not the NOT THE NIGHT TRIAL?

Following on from last year’s very successful “Not the Night Trial” on the day before the Opening Run, I’m planning the Four Counties Challenge (Northants, Warks, Oxon & Bucks) for the evening of Saturday 22nd April just 10 miles up the road from Sunday’s event. It will include navigational challenges, various tests along the route and will be fun. More details later or from Charles Smith.
