FGB Team Challenge at Royal Bath & West Show

Young members took part in a Team Challenge consisting of three elements. Rhydian Phillips, aged 13, did the Stockjudging element and having been thrown in at the deep end not having judged before, gained a creditable 7 points. While this was happening, 15 year old Charlotte Limond completed the Show Preparation part gaining top marks of 10. Then, 10 year old Izzy Phillips competed the task by being placed second in the Showmanship against older handlers. This second place gave us a total of 26 points and were only beaten by one point by the Rivermead Jersey Team. Well done to all three youngsters for making us proud of them in their first stab at this event. 11

The only other handler in the AOB section leading a Guernsey was 13 year old Hannah Garrett. who was placed 1st in her age group. Hannah was also placed 1st in the Under 14 age group in the Guernsey Handling classes that followed. In the over 14 years category, First place went to Charlotte Limond, in second was Stuart Hull, 3rd was Ella Robinson and in fourth was Michael Dawes. In the Calf classes, the Guernseys also paraded with the Any other breeds. The Guernsey Calves were pulled out for their own Champi - onship. Champion Calf was Avalon Fernando Indus and in Reserve was Avalon Farnando Linda. Hon Mention went to Vanda Lillian. ( Editors note : All three calves dams carry the Bickfield prefix.) Growing up on a mixed farm in West Lancashire, dairy farming was something I wanted to do for as long as I can remember. The dairy herd was sold before I was born however we reared heifers and sold them freshly calved through the local auctions and by the age of ten I had set my sights on one day milking my own herd. It was a cold and wet spring and we were calving over 30 cows a day but I enjoyed every minute. From there I travelled over to Australia where I first came across the Guernsey breed working for Evan and Dianne Cowell of the Caronia herd in Wagga Wagga NSW.
