Abstract The European Union’s media art initiative Connecting Cities and New York-based Streaming Museum are two recent examples of curatorial models that operate through large, networked, digital displays. This growing exhibition category combines expressive media architecture and telecommunication elements to engage ‘trans-local’ sites and diverse publics in complex media spaces. By investigating the confluence of exhibition making, public art and urban experience, this article explores the relationship between spectacle and criticality with respect to shifting notions of space, identity and ‘the common’. Page 3 Truman Gets Us Started In the beginning, the area between the Delaware and Hudson rivers, now known as New York City, was inhabited by the Algonquin people. They hunted, fished, and farmed the land, living a peaceful existence until Europeans made their appearance at the beginning of the 16th century. Page 4 The first to arrive was Italian explorer Giovanni da Verrazzano, who sailed up and down the Atlantic coast looking for a route to Asia. He kept going, however, and it wasn’t until 1624 that 30 families from the Dutch West India Company were sent to the Algonquin territory to forge a life.

Since the 9/11 attacks, all kinds of counterterrorism measures have been implemented in urban spaces. As European cities are implementing counterterrorism measures as well, it is interesting and useful to look at experiences of people in New York City with the counterterrorism measures implemented there, as they have been around for a while.
