Fisheries Barriers in Native Trout Drainages
Alberta Conservation Association 2018/19 Project Summary Report Project Name: Fisheries Barriers in Native Trout Drainages Fisheries Program Manager: Peter Aku Project Leader: Scott Seward Primary ACA Staff on Project: Jason Blackburn, David Jackson, and Scott Seward Partnerships Alberta Environment and Parks Environment and Climate Change Canada Key Findings • We compiled existing barrier location information within the Peace River, Athabasca River, North Saskatchewan River, and Red Deer River basins into a centralized database. • We catalogued fish habitat and community data for the Narraway River watershed for use in a population restoration feasibility framework. • We identified 107 potential barrier locations within the Narraway River watershed, using Google Earth ©, which will be refined using valley confinement modeling and validated with ground truthing in 2019. Introduction Invasive species pose one of the greatest threats to Alberta native trout species, through hybridization, competition, and displacement. These threats are partially mediated by the presence of natural headwater fish-passage barriers, namely waterfalls, that impede upstream 1 invasions. In Alberta, several sub-populations of native trout remain genetically pure primarily because of waterfalls. Identification and inventory of waterfalls in the Peace River, Athabasca River, North Saskatchewan River, and Red Deer River basins isolating pure populations and their habitats is critical to inform population recovery and build implementation strategies on a stream by stream basis. For example, historical stocking of non-native trout to the Narraway River watershed may be endangering native bull trout and Arctic grayling. Non-native cutthroat trout, rainbow trout, and brook trout have been stocked in the Torrens River, Stetson Creek, and Two Lakes, all of which have connectivity to the Narraway River. -

APPLICATION FOR A WELL LICENCE Decision 2007-102 PEMBINA FIELD Application No. 1481229 1 DECISION Having completed a review of the application, the Alberta Energy and Utilities Board (EUB/Board) has accepted the applicant’s request to withdraw the application and will not reschedule a public hearing to consider the application. 2 INTRODUCTION 2.1 Application Canetic Resources Inc (Canetic) applied to the EUB, in accordance with Section 2.020 of the Oil and Gas Conservation Regulations, for a licence to drill a level-3 critical sour well from a surface location in Legal Subdivision (LSD) 15 of Section 10, Township 50, Range 8, West of the 5th Meridian, to a projected bottomhole location in LSD 1-15-50-8W5M. The maximum hydrogen sulphide (H2S) concentration expected to be encountered during the drilling and completion/servicing of the well was about 234.6 moles per kilomole (23.46 per cent), and the cumulative drilling H2S release rate was 5.0 cubic metres per second, with a corresponding emergency planning zone of 6.87 kilometres (km). The purpose of the well was to obtain crude oil production from the Nisku Formation. -

The plan was prepared within the context of existing legislation and regulations. It outlines the type and extent of outdoor recreation and tourism opportunities, facilities and services including the delivery of visitor services programs that assist Albertans and visitors to understand and appreciate our natural heritage while ensuring its ongoing conservation. The Management Plan was prepared with extensive public input and will be reviewed and revised periodically to reflect the current thinking of Albertans about how our natural heritage will be protected for present and future generations. The Minister responsible for Parks and Protected Areas has authorized the implementation of the Management Plan and retains the authority to amend or interpret its provisions. EDMONTON REGION COURT RESUMPTION PROTOCOL PART 3 Amended: December 1, 2020 Circuit Point Re-opening Circuit points in the Edmonton Region, with the exception of Ft. Chipewyan and Alexis re-opened in September 2020 for Criminal docket and trial matters. Alexis circuit court will re-open on Nation Land commencing December 3, 2020 and all matters will be heard in this location rather than Mayerthorpe as has previously occurred. Fort Chipewyan will remain closed until further notice and all Criminal Dockets and trials will be conducted remotely unless otherwise directed by the Court. Criminal Court Dockets will run at circuit points, but participants are encouraged to appear remotely with the assistance of duty counsel whenever possible (Duty Counsel 1-855-670-6149). Adjournments by counsel and self represented accused and setting of trials are required to be done pursuant to the CMO Out of Custody Protocol by telephone or email 48 hours prior to the scheduled docket appearance date. Effective immediately all Family and Civil docket matters will be heard remotely (via telephone or Webex) from the Basepoint location. All litigants and Counsel should contact the Clerk's office at the basepoint and ensure that they have a telephone number at which they can be reached on the scheduled court date. If a trial has been set, please contact the clerk for advice as to where the trial will be proceeding. All participants, including counsel, witnesses, and accused persons, are encouraged to contact the base point associated with their circuit point in advance of their scheduled appearance date to confirm that the circuit point is open and operational as intended. -

The arrangement of the tipis was not strictly defined in these camps, although all of them faced east. This allowed the morning prayers to travel towards the rising sun, helping it to come above the horizon for another day. Relationship with the Land – Seasonal Round Unit Resource Glenbow Museum Relationship with the Land - Resources Definition of the term – “Seasonal Round” The Blackfoot tribes had an enormous land base they inhabited. Within this territory they had areas where they would travel well over 500 miles during a yearly cycle to hunt, gather and renew religious commitments. Being knowledgeable of their environment and respectful of their gifts from the creator they would carefully select locations or places to travel to in a lifetime. -

Climate in the Lake Winnipeg Watershed and the Level of Lake Winnipeg Prepared for the Manitoba Clean Environment Commission Gregory K. McCullough th 6 February 2015 This document has been prepared at the request of the Clean Environment Commission. The main objective are 1) to describe climatic patterns and inflow history to Lake Winnipeg over the 100 years since widespread, continuous meteorological and hydrometric records were initiated in the early 20th century, and to describe climate patterns predicted for the 21st century, and 2) to describe the effects of trends and variability in climate over the watershed on the water level record in the lake. Finally, there is a brief summary of how regulation since the late 1970s has interacted with these historical relationships. Disclosure In my current employment at the University of Manitoba, I conduct scientific research that is partially funded by Manitoba Hydro, including research related to the effects of climate change and hydro-electric regulation on Hudson Bay. However, none of the research described below was supported by funding from Manitoba Hydro. Lake Winnipeg Climate and Regulation 1 Feb 2015 Greg McCullough i Executive summary Over the last century, the total annual inflow to Lake Winnipeg has ranged by almost 4X from 35,000 to 136,000 cfs. The variability of tributary discharge and underlying climate in the watershed happens at four scales: seasonal, year-to-year, multi-decadal, and long term trends. The level of the lake has varied at all of these scales in rough synchrony with the supply of water from its watershed. Based on analyses reported in scientific literature, over the last century, precipitation has increased in the watersheds of the Winnipeg and Red Rivers. -

I focus on the First Nation population of southern Alberta, specifically the Blackfoot Confederacy (Siksikaitsitapi). I use a Siksikaitsitapi lens and methodology on their experiences at an IRS, the IRS settlement, the Canadian government’s apology to former students, and the status of reconciliation as a whole. -
