Exoplanets known today range from gas-giants to nearly Earth-size planets, and some even in the habitable zones of their host stars.

CSIR Diamond Jubilee Technology Award for 2007 and CSIR Award for S&T Innovation for Rural Development for 2007 & 2008, at a glittering function held on 20 December 2008 in the Dr D.S. Kothari Auditorium, DRDO Bhawan, New Delhi. Attended by a galaxy of S&T personnel, the function was presided over by Shri Kapil Sibal, Minister for Science & Technology and Earth Sciences and Vice President, CSIR. Prof Samir K. Brahmachari, Director General, CSIR, proposed a vote of thanks. His talk once again reiterated the originality of vision which has been the hallmark of every piece of work which Gerardus has done in his illustrious career. After describing several peculiar aspects of gravitation and blackhole physics, he went on to point out how progress in bringing together the principles of quantum theory and gravity would require a novel way of thinking. During the last part of the talk, he outlined some aspects of such a model, in which quantum mechanics becomes deterministic at Planck scales. Th is is a radical departure from the conventional thinking in which quantum mechanics is interpreted along probabilistic lines. Welcome to...     Department of PHYSICS Indian Institute of Technology Madras THE INSTITUTE Indian Institute of Technology Madras is one among the foremost “institutes of national importance in higher science and technology education, basic and applied research. The first Indo-German agreement for the establishment of the Indian Institute of Technology at Madras was signed in 1959. The Institute was formally inaugurated in 1959 by Prof. Humayun Kabir, Union Minister for Scientific Research and Cultural Affairs. The IIT system now has sixteen institutes of Technology. IIT Madras is a residential institute with nearly 550 faculty, 8000 students and 1250 administrative and supporting staff and is a self-contained campus located in a beautiful wooded land of about 250 hectares. It has established itself as a premier centre for teaching, research and industrial consultancy in the country. The Institute has sixteen academic departments and a few advanced research centres in various disciplines of engineering and pure sciences, with nearly 100 laboratories organised in a unique pattern of functioning. A faculty of international repute, a brilliant student community, excellent technical and supporting staff and an effective administration have all contributed to the pre- eminent status of IIT Madras. The campus is located in the city of Chennai, previously known as Madras. Dr Srinivasan has made outstanding contributions in the area of computational genomics, protein structure analysis, modeling and computational studies on proteins that are involved in cellular signal transduction pathways. His studies at the whole genome level have helped to identify remotely similar proteins sharing structural and functional features.
