This is indeed a terrific achievement and we would be justified in saying that we have laid a strong foundation for a unique scientific institution. However, I strongly feel that we are at a fork in our journey ahead. A number of events over the past years necessitate a reevaluation of the functioning of NCBS for our sustained growth and relevance, and to help us chart a path for our future trajectory. -

Part I : the GMRT -- a historical perspective . Part II : the GMRT -- current status . Part III : future -- the upgraded GMRT Some history . It is the early 1980s… the VLA has recently become operational . Radio astronomy has shifted from the low frequencies, where it was born, to higher frequencies (cm and higher wavelengths) -- obvious reasons . Note, however, techniques like self-cal have been shown to work . In India, the radio astronomy group at the Tata Institute, under the leadership of Govind Swarup, is looking for the next big challenge… They have already : . Built the Ooty Radio Telescope in the late 1960s – still operational & producing international quality results (in fact, currently being upgraded with new receiver system!) . Built the Ooty Synthesis Radio Telescope (1980s) – short-lived but valuable learnings . Built up considerable experience in low frequencies (metre wavelengths) Birth of the GMRT . Motivation : bridge the gap in radio astronomy facilities at low frequencies and address science problems best studied at metre wavelengths . First concept : 1984 (started with large cylinders); evolved to 34 dishes of 45 metres by 1986 . Project cleared and funding secured by 1987 . Construction started : 1990; first antenna erected : 1992 . First light observations : 1997 – 1998 . Released for world-wide use : 2002 The GMRT : turning it ON Jan 1997 : First fringes with the prototype GMRT correlator Dec 1998 : first light pulsar observation with the GMRT Dedication of the GMRT The Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope was dedicated to the World Scientific Community by the Chairman of TIFR Council, Shri Ratan Tata. -

ENSEMBLEENSEMBLE Volume 4 (1) | January – February 2016 Newsletter of the Indo-French Centre for the Promotion of Advanced Research India-France Relations Touching New Heights editor’s note Dear Readers, India and France are witnessing the emergence of a new era of collaborative efforts between the two countries in various sectors. In November/December 2015, France hosted a successful global scale diplomatic event for adopting an agreement by many countries on climate change where India was also an active participant. After the visit of Honourable Prime Minister of India Shri Narendra Modi to France in April 2015, the French President H. E. Dr. Mukesh Kumar Mr. François Hollande visited India in January, 2016 as a Chief Guest on the Director, CEFIPRA occasion of 67th Republic Day of India. During his visit, Indian and French scientific as well as technological communities from academia and industry sectors, joined hands through several Agreements/MoUs signed by the two countries. CEFIPRA had the privilege of hosting the officials / signatories of three of such Agreements/MoU signed on 25 January 2016. CEFIPRA, since its evolution as a unique institutional platform and collaborative mechanism, is contributing through its various interventions in a diverse range of S&T domains. These collaborative efforts are making it possible to generate significant knowledge that has a potential to translate discovery science into solution science. Construction Activity 245 1 About The Institute History The Harish-Chandra Research Institute is one of the premier research institutes in the country. It is an autonomous institution fully funded by the Department of Atomic En- ergy (DAE), Government of India. The Institute was founded as the Mehta Research Institute of Mathematics and Mathematical Physics (MRI). On 10th Oct 2000 the In- stitute was renamed as Harish-Chandra Research Institute (HRI) after the acclaimed mathematician, the late Prof Harish-Chandra. MRI started with the efforts of Dr. B. N. Prasad, a mathematician at the University of Allahabad, with initial support from the B. S. Mehta Trust, Kolkata. Dr. Prasad was succeeded in January 1966 by Dr. S. R. Sinha, also of Allahabad University. He was followed by Prof. P. L. Bhatnagar as the first formal Director. After an interim period, in January 1983 Prof. S. S. Shrikhande joined as the next Director of the Institute. During his tenure the dialogue with the DAE entered into decisive stage and a review committee was constituted by the DAE to examine the Institute’s future. -

Kothari Auditorium, DRDO Bhawan, New Delhi. Attended by a galaxy of S&T personnel, the function was presided over by Shri Kapil Sibal, Minister for Science & Technology and Earth Sciences and Vice President, CSIR. Prof Samir K. In association with SEBC (Society for Environment and Biodiversity Conservation), Pune, we also conduct Annual Awareness programs around International Biodiversity Day in Pune and Goa. Himalaya has also partnered with WeForest in order to stop the loss of natural forestry and accelerate forest landscape restoration. Through this initiative, we are planting trees in the Khasi Hills region of Meghalaya this year. Setting the pace for a sustainable ecosystem, our Tree Planting initiative has made a positive impact on the environment, where forests are managed sustainably for climate and humanity. Statement of Accounts 55 INDIAN ACADEMY OF SCIENCES BANGALORE 4 ANNUAL REPORT 2007 - 2008 1 Introduction The Academy was founded in 1934 by Sir C.V. Raman with the main objective of promoting the progress and upholding the cause of science (both pure and applied). It was registered as a Society under the Societies Registration Act on 24 April 1934. The Academy commenced functioning with 65 Fellows and the formal inauguration took place on 31 July 1934 at the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. On the afternoon of that day its first general meeting of Fellows was held where Sir C.V. Raman was elected its President and the draft constitution of the Academy was approved and adopted. The first issue of the Academy Proceedings was published in July 1934. The present report covering the period from April 2007 to March 2008 represents the seventy-fourth year of the Academy. -
