Our philosophy

The baobab tree arises and grows in a context where everything else makes an effort for living, and it represents the possibility of adaptation in any scenario and situation; the most difficult and the most unexpected.

It is the compass that explains us the harmonious link between the environment and the design that doesn’t overturn the natural equilibrium, but adapts to the background without changing the dynamics. Enhancing and not scandalizing.

In the great environmental mosaic we can see clearly distortions and rip ups, more or less net, due to inappropriate technics that encumber an effective development and a sustainable local management.

From this evaluation comes the demand of a personal designing and working approach in which the terms “geoengineering philosophy” summarizes the concept of a harmonious engineering work with the surrounding environment.

The environmental sustainability thus becomes a working parameter and not a restriction, but overall a global concept and not a single solution. Only this way the design becomes an element of authentic engineering and a human challenge with himself.

PROJECTS

CASAENERGIA (2005) Among other activities, Hydroingea also deals with the development and design of energy facilities based on renewable energy sources, strong know-how in the field of geo-engineering, with particular reference to water, in continuous alignment with the new technologies available and to new Community legislation concerning the design and services of environmental engineering. In particular, the Firm has a strong experience in the field of hydrogeology and water management, and the design of water catchments, construction management and technical assistance to the drilling of wells, pumping tests and long-term steps. For these studies, Hydroingea has long developed the tools to ensure processing of the first level of meteorological and hydrological parameters, in terms of collection and analysis of historical and cartographic official of the territory in question. For his interest in the development of their industry, long, Hydroingea is actively participating in the study for the application of technology that leverages the low enthalpy geothermal energy and heat storage in the aquifer and their synergistic integration, with theoretical and analytical models. The present project concerns the study and the dimensioning of the thermal storage for a civil building designed to experimental purposes, for the development of such technology. The trial is called "Project Casaenergia", born from the commitment of Tecnosol Srl and sponsored by "La Sapienza" University of Rome, for the promotion of a new approach to the design efficiency of buildings.

EXPO 2010 SHANGAI, CHINA (2008) Hydroingea, in collaboration with Studio BiCuadro Associated Architects, represented by Arch. M. Brugia, won third place in the final list of ideas competition for the design of the Italian Pavilion at the Shanghai World Expo 2010, organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which referred to the theme "Better City, Better Life ". The pavilion is a showcase of Italian excellence on the quality of life in urban areas. To this end we were rewarded the presentation of new trends in engineering, architecture and design in , of environmentally sustainable construction techniques, materials and innovative technologies. In this case, the firm was responsible for the structural design, geotechnical and energy, particularly with regard to the peculiar shape of the planned works, both as architectural design, which in its structural design to the location and geographical units to the specific type of use and needs of the users of the same; These factors have inspired an idea of the building as a unit if a completely separate as a whole and at the same time in perfect harmony with the surrounding context. During the "design energy" it has been met with the same conception of: • using the characteristics of the place to optimize the production of energy, decreasing inter alia the human impact (either as plants and to the request) that the supply of such a structure usually requires; • making the unit completely "unique" in the sense of the possible self-sufficient in terms of meeting their energy needs. To this we have considered "renewable" energy sources on the spot, depending on the type of primary use to be made of the premises designed. Expo, as exposure then in China of our culture, such as exchange and transmission of our sense of design, a design that goes in the direction of meeting the needs of the present without compromising the resources of future generations, the point of reference as a means of protection and line guide for environmental design on one side and polycentric, that values the life and welfare of the individual, on the other.

ENEL CONTEMPORANEA 2008 – THE WAITING ROOM Hydroingea, in collaboration with Studio BiCuadro Associated Architects, represented by Arch. M.Brugia, won the third place in the final list of ideas competition for the design of the Italian Pavilion at the Shanghai universal exposition 2010, organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which referred to the theme "Better City, Better Life". The pavilion is a showcase of Italian excellence on the quality of life in urban areas. For this purpose Hydroingea took part in the exhibition of public art on the forms of energy promoted by Enel Contemporanea. The work realized, created by the American artist Jeffrey Inaba in collaboration with Luca Peralta Studio, is located inside the Policlinico Umberto I in Rome and saw Hydroingea in the role of technical adviser with regard to the energy section and design of photovoltaic plant installed. The work is substantially composed of three elements: a luminous sphere (3m diameter), with another sphere shaped opening in mouth (8m diameter) and a cantilever roof mushroom-shaped (10m in diameter). The luminous sphere, like a giant lantern suspended at the entrance of the hospital on Viale Regina Elena, announced the presence of the work situated on the square in front of the Department of Radiology and of Pediatrics. The large sphere with a diameter of 8 m is partially recessed into the soil to form a space usable, covered, protected from sun, rain and wind. In the lower part of the opening in the shape of the mouth they are positioned n. 18 photovoltaic panels that produce energy for nearly 2kW to light up the work and to operate the video and the DVD placed in the internal environment thereby making a structure energy self-sufficient.

THE DESERT ROSE – DUBAI XI Thyssenkrupp Elevator – Architecture Award – Tall Emblem Structure in Za'abeel Park – DSRTR The sand is flushing over the earth. The water evaporates under the sun leaving the salts on the earth. This is the essential of the Desert Rose origin. Thus, we have designed a part of the building as a water source overflowing from the basement of the building itself. From seawater with the help of the sun, inside the building the water become fresh water to be used for building services. The production of fresh water from the salt water is proportional to intensity of the solar radiation. A fraction of this is used to mantain temperature of the distillation unit. The distillation unit is formed by a solar distiller and a service tray. In the service tray are organised all main collection and distribution pipes. The solar distiller is thermally insulated and all connections are served with a remote control valves. The sequence of distillation units are divided in two main sequence in order to have a continuous production of fresh water. This arrangement allows to organise a cycle of production and regeneration. The seawater is distributed from the top of the structure forming a sort of cascade in order to have a single uplift plant. The main distribution pipes are working on a side wall. The fresh water is collected through the main collector pipe travelling along the opposite side wall of the building. On the same side the main drainage pipe collects the concentrated brine from evaporation tank. To reduce the environmental impact the pumping system is partially supplied with auto-produced electrical energy. Besides photovoltaic, a mini hydraulic electrical production plant could be supplied. It will recover the potential energy accumulated in the stored fluids in distillation units. The idea is to have two different plants, one working with brines and a second one with fresh water.

“A GREEN HEART” IN CAMPOBASSO (2009) In the framework of the contest “Upgrade of the P. Albino public library” in Campobasso, Hydroingea s.r.l., in partnership with Luca Peralta Studio, has been awarded with the second place in rankings. Hydroingea s.r.l deeply cares about environmental sustainability by proposing building services based on ecological and environment-compliant criteria, according to the Kyoto Protocol. The building by itself behaves as a passive “machine”, because it has been developed according to the present energy savings techniques; about its consumptions, it takes the advantages of the energy produced by renewable energies, both geothermal and photovoltaic. The complex is fully self-sufficient in energetic needs. The courtyard is the heart of the entire project: the HVAC systems, which represents the 70-80% of the energetic needs, is based on geothermal heat-pumps (about 60 kW) that sink their “roots” in the soil under the courtyard. Heat is exchanged into the rooms by radiant surfaces and by the air driven by the HVAC system. Moreover, the system is able to cover the whole DHW needs of the buildings.

GREEN RIBBON AT ATER HOUSE (2009) Into the “Italian contest about Energy Saving issues, renewable energies use, safety culture and acoustic comfort into the ATER Properties – Section II”, Hydroingea s.r.l has been awarded with the third place in rankings. The project of the building services based on the more advanced state-of-the-art concepts and the architectural concerns attended by Luca Peralta Studio, have led to the engineering of two bio-buildings, the perfect answer to energy saving and environmental sustainability issues. The complex is fully self-sufficient in its primary needs. The project has two main goals: 1) to assure a better quality of life to the people; 2) to be a first-of-a-kind demonstration of energy saving and environmental sustainability effective feasibility.

TERRAMADRE – LEVANTE PLAZA (2009) In collaboration with Luca Peralta Studio, Hydroingea won the design competition for the realization of "School in the east plaza" organized by the Municipality of Bisceglie, as part of the Program Sensi Contemporanei_ Quality Italy. The intervention object of the design competition will aim to equip the new area building economics and popular of the secondary infrastructure works. The strong point. The search for development strategies compatible with the economic and environmental sustainability requires the use of systems which are largely self-sufficient and at the same time does not cause excessive operational complexity. In an ideal world the mechanical systems should work as efficient support for natural systems rather than as an alternative to them. The materials, shape, orientation of the building have an important role in defining the internal environment

and the need or otherwise of an intervention on the relevant energy plan to maintain comfortable conditions. In order to optimize the overall efficiency of the system, you have chosen to use geothermal energy for the production of thermal energy for air conditioning and to activate the system with the electricity produced by photovoltaics. Appropriate packages sensors operate as a support to the management of the thermo-hygrometric wellness of the environments and that of lighting management common: in each space, so as to achieve maximum comfort and at the same time without dissipating and therefore waste energy, as well as ensure proper lighting management aimed at minimizing energy waste.

TINTORETTO TOWER IN BRESCIA (2003-2014)

Chosen as the best among the 53 projects submitted for the initiative promoted by the Order of Engineers and the Foundation of Brescia, the redevelopment of the Tower with interventions not radical redesigns the existing rather than think of a new building, in order to maintain its intended residential use, from "social architecture to social architecture." Also winner of the "Old and New category" of the prestigious 2014 MIPIM Architectural Review Future Project Awards Transforming Social Houses into Homes Sociable, Cannes. One of the winning ideas is constituted by the variable depth of the balconies that inspired the painting futurist Balla "Compenetrazioni Iridescent 7", transform the architecture of the building from static and flat, dynamic and three-dimensional; balustrades of these balconies are made of glass-glass photovoltaic modules integrated, high efficiency for self-generation of electricity. The building also has system of insulation in reeds, fully recyclable material and present in the local context, for the reduction of heat loss but the heart of the energy system consists of an air conditioning system with a geothermal heat pump, using the 'ground water, which in the area of Tintoretto is very productive. This choice was made because it is a system that uses a renewable resource and which guarantees, at the same time, through the use of the heat pump high standard performance and reduced maintenance over time. Other factors that influenced the choice are the versatility of this application, able to cover the needs of heating / cooling and domestic hot water and the propensity of the context in which it entered the project. The main production of photovoltaic electricity during the day will allow the optimization of “self-consuption especially for summer air conditioning and utilities such as elevators, auxiliary facilities, etc., While in periods with poor weather conditions and during the night, the various air conditioning systems (especially in winter), pool lighting, etc. They can be powered from the mains, which are connected in parallel, taking advantage with the electricity injected into the grid that can be used to offset the electricity withdrawn from the grid per year.

THE GARDEN OF “PORTA CAPO”

The project is part of a larger project to upgrade the historical center, started long ago by the Municipality of , targeted not only to the recovery of the residential fabric, but also of degraded areas located immediately behind the ancient village. The area in question was, in fact, a strong element of degradation of the slope green, from the slopes of the seventeenth-century Palazzo Cenci Bolognetti, promises downstream towards the bed of the river Aniene along the highway Tiburtina. It is an area of high landscape value, below one of the main entrances to the country, away from Porta Abruzzo crossing Porta Capo, leads directly into the heart of the village retracing an important route leading from the ancient Vicus Variae - remembered by the poet Horace - to via Valeria below. This important geotechnical engineering work, through the solutions implemented, has allowed the safety of a slope compromised with important steepness.
