January/February 2015 Vol. 26, No.1 Swami Chinmayananda CHINMAYA MISSION SAN JOSE PUBLICATION MISSION STATEMENT To provide to individuals, from any background, the wisdom of Vedanta and practical means for spiritual growth and happiness, enabling them to become a positive contributor to the society. Chinmaya Lahari While Shiva dances, His matted locks hold the sacred river Ganga, the power and the source of all movement in life, with its waters that purify mankind and the crescent moon delicate as a new-born babe with its promise of life in all its radiance and glory. What is perhaps most significant of all in the image is the combination of this God ascetic, the solitary One, master of meditation, with the frenzied dance - the Yogi and the artist. A dancer becomes the being that he impersonates on the stage. In the dance are aroused the entire energy of body, mind, intellect and soul.. It is a complete surrender to God. While the body moves in a frenzy, like the world with its tumult, Shiva Himself, is undisturbed by the activity, depicting most wonderfully the mortal life and Divine Self. • Final-Shivoham-Mahashivarathri-2020.Pdf
Shivoham – Mahashivarathri 2020 With love and gratitude, I offer myself at the divine lotus feet of our dearest loving Lord, Bhagawan Shri Sathya Sai Baba who is Sarvadevataathitaswarupa (beyond all divine names and forms). Dear brothers and sisters, loving Sairam to all of you. I wish all of you a happy and holy Mahashivarathri filled with love, peace and divine bliss. We are really blessed and fortunate to have been the contemporaries of this living Kali Yuga Avatar, Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba. 1 Sathya Sai Baba Reveals His True Identity In His infinite love and compassion, Swami revealed His divinity in His discourse on May 17, 1968 at the First World Conference in Mumbai. He said, “this is the human form in which all the divine names and forms attributed by man to God are manifest”. That means He is the embodiment of all divine forms. Over many decades, many people have seen in Swami the vision of Shiva, Shakti, Shiva-Shakti, Buddha, Jesus, Rama, Krishna, Hanuman, and many forms and names. All names and forms dwell in Him. So, I would say He is all in one, and He is the one in all. He is the indweller in all beings in the world. That's why we say He is also all in all, and ultimately, He is beyond all. I therefore address Him as Sarvadevataathitaswarupa. Sarvadevataswarupa means embodiment of all divine forms. Sarvadevataathitaswarupa means beyond all divine names and forms. There was a devotee named Peddabottu. She had composed some lyrics on Swami's glory – how wonderful He is, and that He is Shiva.

  • Shivaratri – the Great Night of Shiva
SHREE SWAMINARAYAN BAL YUVAK MANDAL S.K.S. SWAMINARAYAN TEMPLE (LONDON) Westfield Lane, Kenton, Harrow, Middlesex,HA3 9EA TEL: 020 8909 9899 FAX: 020 8909 9389 SHIVARATRI – THE GREAT NIGHT OF SHIVA Mahashivaratri is celebrated throughout the country; it is particularly popular in Uttar Pradesh. Mahashivratri falls on the 14th day of the dark half of 'Phalgun' (February- March). The name means "the night of Shiva". The ceremonies take place mainly at night. This is a festival observed in honour of Lord Shiva and it is believed that on this day Lord Shiva was married to Parvati. Devotees bathe at sunrise, preferably in the Ganga, or any other holy water source (like Shiva Sagartank at Khajurao). They offer prayers to the sun (surya), Vishnu and Shiva. This is a purificatory rite, an important part of all Hindu festivals. Wearing a clean piece of clothing after the holy bath, worshippers carry pots of water to the temple and bathe the Shivling. The temple reverberates with the sound of bells and shouts of shankerji ki jai ‘Hail Shiva’. Devotees go around the Shivling, three or seven times, and then pour water over it. Lord Shiva is the deity of death and destruction, without which growth and rebirth could not take place. Lord Shiva's third eye in the centre of His forehead opens only in extreme anger, whilst His matted hair carries the Goddess Ganga down to earth. All Hindus observe Mahashivaratri. Devotees gather in great numbers and attend the temples of Shiva, perform pooja to the Shivaling, sing bajans, offer prayers and on this day one have to observe a fast.

You might live for just a short period - eighty or ninety years. In that short period we must make ourselves happy inside our hearts.” Swami Premananda 1 Prema Ananda Vahini FEBRUARY 2017 Satsang with Swamiji How Can We Learn Spirituality Quickly? What do you want to know about? Spirituality? You want to learn about spirituality and everything from Swami. How many days, weeks, months or years will it take? Normally time is not important when it comes to spiritual matters; it is instead about how much interest in and personal feeling you have for the Divine. It is about feeling. If people learn about Vedanta, Christianity, Hinduism or Buddhism from books then you can say how long it will take to learn it. For example, if you want to learn the Bible then you can immediately read it. It will take about six or seven months. If you want to learn about Lord Buddha’s dharma you can read about it in one or two weeks. It’s easy to read a book quickly. But practising spirituality is completely different from book knowledge. How do you feel about spirituality? What kind of teachings do you like in spirituality? How do you decide which teachings to follow? Some people like the spiritual teaching of nirvana.

This brings out the non-distinction or identity between the two. This identity is stressed in the names like Sankaranarayana and Harihara given for the Supreme Being. Raineswara and Rainanatha are the names that are significant for this line of thought. There is an interesting story con- cerning the meaning of the name Rameswara. It is narrated that once the Devas got perplexed as to what exactly was the meaning of Rameswara. They approached Vishnu and requested him to enlighten them as to the exact significance of the term. Vishnu is reported to have told the Devas that the word is an example of tatpurusha samaasa and should be interpreted as Ramasya Isvarah or Rama's Lord, and that Rameswara denoted Shiva. The Devas were not satisfied. They had a suspicion that Vishnu gave this interpretation out of a sense of humility, not wishing to assume for himself a superior position.

  • Shiva Lingam to Appease Lord Shiva
Mahashivaratri Festival Mahashivaratri Festival or the ‘The Night of Shiva’ is celebrated with devotion and religious fervor in honor of Lord Shiva, one of the deities of Hindu Trinity. Shivaratri falls on the moonless 14th night of the new moon in the Hindu month of Phalgun, which corresponds to the month of February - March in English Calendar. Celebrating the festival of Shivaratri devotees observe day and night fast and perform ritual worship of Shiva Lingam to appease Lord Shiva. Legends of Mahashivratri There are various interesting legends related to the festival of Maha Shivaratri. According to one of the most popular legends, Shivaratri marks the wedding day of Lord Shiva and Parvati. Some believe that it was on the auspicious night of Shivaratri that Lord Shiva performed the ‘Tandava’, the dance of the primal creation, preservation and destruction. Another popular Shivratri legend stated in Linga Purana states that it was on Shivaratri that Lord Shiva manifested himself in the form of a Linga. Hence the day is considered to be extremely auspicious by Shiva devotees and they celebrate it as Mahashivaratri - the grand night of Shiva. Traditions and Customs of Shivaratri Various traditions and customs related to Shivaratri Festival are dutifully followed by the worshippers of Lord Shiva. Devotees observe strict fast in honor of Shiva, though many go on a diet of fruits and milk some do not consume even a drop of water. Devotees strongly believe that sincere worship of Lord Shiva on the auspicious day of Shivaratri, absolves a person of sins and liberates him from the cycle of birth and death.
