International Corporate Investment in Ohio Operations August 2011 Policy Research and Strategic Planning Office A State Affiliate of the U.S. Census Bureau International Corporate Investment In Ohio Operations August 2011 John R. Kasich, Governor of Ohio Christiane Schmenk, Director, Ohio Department of Development International Corporate Investment in Ohio Operations August 2011 Table of Contents Introduction and Explanations Section 1: Maps Section 2: Alphabetical Listing by Company Name Section 3: Companies Listed by Country of Ultimate Parent Section 4: Companies Listed by County Location INTRODUCTION AND EXPLANATION International Investment in Ohio • This survey identifies 3,398 international establishments employing 178,994 people. • Companies from 42 countries were identified as having investments in Ohio. • Six countries comprise 77 percent of total international employment: Japan 28 % Germany 14 % United Kingdom 13% Canada 8% France 7% Switzerland 6% • The motor vehicle industry comprises the largest segment of employment. • Ranking investment by the number of employees, ten companies employ more than 2,500: Honda 13,500 Aldi 6,000 Alimentation Couche-Tard (Circle K) 3,200 Bridgestone 3,160 Reed Elsevier 2,950 Signet Jewelers 2,880 ArcelorMittal 2,700 Delfin SARL (LensCrafters) 2,550 Tyco International 2,540 Fiat / Chrysler 2,500 • The Metropolitan Areas of Cleveland, Columbus, and Cincinnati have the highest concentrations of international investment. Explanations Company listings in this directory are limited to those with five or more workers at an individual location. However, summary statistics on the total number of establishments and employees by country of the parent corporation include estimates for all establishments, regardless of size. Companies, or divisions of companies, with multiple retail or service locations (e.g., BP service stations) were generally assigned one location with an employment estimate reflecting the total for all locations in the state. These consolidated listings are denoted by a company name where all letters are capitalized (e.g., BP AMERICA INC). • In Section 2, which lists companies alphabetically, these consolidated listings include a statewide estimate of the total number of establishments (or sites) operated by the company. • In Section 3, which lists companies by country, summary statistics for each country include the total number of establishments associated with these consolidated listings. • In Section 4, which lists companies by county, consolidated listings have been assigned the location “zz” and appear at the very end of the section. Due to different methodology, time frames, and differing reporting formats, it is recommended that no comparisons be made between this edition and earlier editions of the International Investment reports. Two large institutional food service firms have multiple locations throughout the state. This report underestimates the scope of these operations. The Compass Group (United Kingdom), in addition to operating restaurants, provides food service at a number of college campuses (e.g., Bowling Green, Xavier, and Ohio Wesleyan). Sodexo (France) has contracts with several universities, including Kent State, Youngstown State, Denison, Ohio Northern, and Wittenberg. Sodexo also provides similar services for school districts (e.g., Columbus City Schools). SIC – Standard Industrial Classification codes are assigned to a company location based upon the function of the operation.
