SolarBlack Treated Solar Orbiter components SolarBlack Production And on it goes………. • June 2012 ESA approach EnBio with another request • Need alternatives to incumbent white surfaces for solar reflection – • Seeking improved thermo-optical performance • Striving to overcome problems with: • White darkening over time causing reduced efficiencies • Coating delamination – flaking off the surface • Decreased reflectance • Particulate damaging instrumentation • Poor surface conductivity causing static build-up • A €100k Work Program put in place to research the possibilities • We fully engaged UCD & took on a PhD student in ceramics • Kicked off program in July last year • Within 1 month we had produced 2 options in a pilot plant in UCD • Quickly narrowed to 1, which we developed over next 9 months • This product – Solar White – is undergoing final test in UK • All tests passed and no problems anticipated with final test • Major excitement in the ESA community • A further production facility planned and proposal submitted to ESA • This is being discussed between EI and ESA in Paris today! Support the development of a high technology industrial sector in Ireland that supports the European space programme and that can exploit global space market opportunities. 2. Support the development in Ireland of a dynamic research community in space research, as well as in a number of space related technology domains. 3. Promote the use of space based systems for commercial and societal needs. 4. They want greater security and economic wealth, but they also want to pursue their dreams, to increase their knowledge, and they want younger people to be attracted to the pursuit of science and technology. I think that space can do all of this: it can produce a higher quality of life, better security, more economic wealth, and also fulfil our citizens' dreams and thirst for knowledge, and attract the young generation. This is the reason space exploration is an integral part of overall space activities. It has always been so, and it will be even more important in the future. ESA devotes much time and effort in trying to meet all these requirements while maintaining technical excellence and economy. Doing Business with ESA EMITS EMITS is ESA’s web-based system for publishing (competitive) Invitation to Tenders (ITT). It includes inter alia: • A list of intended ITTs: potential bidders may declare their interest and see other bidders • Many technical, administrative and contractual standards and documents (General Tender Conditions, General Clauses and Conditions for ESA Contracts, PSS-A forms, engineering standards etc) • Competitive ITTs • Competitive ITTs published by ESA on behalf of other entities Request for Quotation (RFQs) is the term used for direct negotiations.
