National Seminar On Celebrating 100 Years of Sociology in India On theme Relevance of Studying Sociology in India: Issues and Challenges 23rd November 2019 Organized by Department of Sociology NSCBM Govt. College Hamirpur & Sidharth Govt. Degree College Nadaun, Distt. Hamirpur In Collaboration with North West Indian Sociological Association (NWISA) Sociological Society, Himachal Pradesh (SSHP) Call for Papers Sociology as an independent course for teaching and research has completed 100 years in India. The Department of Sociology was established in 1919 by Prof. Patrick Geddes and become the first Chairperson of the Department of Sociology and Civics at Bombay University, who was a city planner and human geographer. Latter he was replaced by G.S. Ghurye and N.A. Toothi and was a concrete step in the growth of sociology in India. Broadly the development of Sociology can be divided into following three schools: 1. The Bombay School 2. The Calcutta School 3. The Lucknow School 1.The Bombay School: The department of Sociology in the University of Bombay (now Mumbai) started to function since 1919—five years after the World War I began. Westernisation of sociological thought was found to be so profound in the department that many of the “little traditions” which could emerge in the course of development of sociology in the first part of this time period was unable to snowball to acquire further momentum. Patrick Geddes, G S Ghurye, A R Desai and scholars of subsequent generations. G.S. Ghurye can be considered the founder of institutionalized sociologyin India. He headed India’s very first post-graduate teaching department of Sociology at Bombay University for thirty-five years. 2. The Calcutta School: Akshay Kumar Dutta, Benoy Kumar Sarkar, Brajendra Nath Seal and establishment in1975 and become functional in 1976 and currently running M.A., M.Phil. & Ph.D. coursework. It will complete forty-two years in 2018. 3.The Lucknow School: Indian sociology was enriched by sociologists and social thinkers belonging to the Lucknow School—Radhakamal Mukherjee, Dhurjati Prasad Mukherjee and D N Majumdar. The Department of Sociology is one of the oldest in the country as its history dates back to 1922. Though Sociology has started its journey in the state of Himachal Pradesh in late 70s in old colleges like; Dharmshala, Mandi, Shimla, Solan and Hamirpur. To celebrate 100 years of Sociology in India, a State Level One Day Seminar is being organised by the Department of Sociology, Govt. College Hamirpur in collaboration with Sociological Society Himachal Pradesh. For this seminar, papers are being invited for on the following sub-themes though these are not limited and papers can be submitted on related main theme of the Seminar, “Relevance of Studying Sociology in India: Issues and Challenges” The Sub- themes for the Seminar: 1. The institution is a pioneer of higher education in the entire state, the motto of which is “Veertaa aur Balidaan”, i.e., “Bravery and Sacrifice”. The college stands for academic excellence, exemplary achievements in sports and cultural activities. It is an alma mater which all alumni look back to with fond memories. The college is affiliated to the Himachal Pradesh University Shimla u/s 2(f) &12(B) of UGC Act and has been accredited B grade with grade point 2.83 by NAAC in the year 2015. The college offers different undergraduate programmes in humanities, science and Commerce. Postgraduate Courses in Mathematics, Botany, Zoology, English, Hindi, Economics and Commerce are also run by the college. The college also runs self-financing courses in BBA, BCA, B.Voc. (Retail Management &Hospitality) and PGDCA. About NWISA: North West Indian Sociological Association (NWISA) is a professional body of sociologists working in five states of North West region of the country formed in 1996. These states are Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana and UT Chandigarh. The idea of forming this association was developed and discussed in the conference of Indian Sociological Society’s held at Barkatullah University, Bhopal in the month of December, 1995. Finally, NWISA was registered under society’s act 1861 with registrar societies, UT Chandigarh in 1996 and Prof. K. Gopal Iyer has a privilege to be the first president and Prof. Satish Sharma General Secretary and Treasure. It is a professional body of anyone who is associated with sociology at any level and all the times trying to provide a platform for them all. Specifically concentrating on social issues of northwest region and whole country in general, NWISA aspiring to develop a network of everyone associated with sociology in any capacity and this association will host cultural and academic exchange programmes, summer schools on different issues, small research projects sharing and calling from one state/region to another etc. NWISA is committed for the upliftment of Sociology in whole region. Presently, as per the decision taken in Chandigarh review meeting, Celebrating 100 Years of Sociology in whole North West region by executive members of NWISA.
