VlllARAIGOSA MAYOR March 11, 2011 To All Interested Parties: The City Council adopted the action(s), as attached, under Council file No. 11-0312, at its meeting held March 9, 2011 City Clerk os An Equal Employment Opportunity ~Affirmative Action Employer =-.~- '-~--,-=---'----.--1 I /- ()31/)..> l;r) CITY CLERK FOR PLAl ,lENT ON NEXT #51' I'-MRh~:!il~~UNCIL flGENDI' TO BE POSTED Singapore Alnmes ay ,u" 0 2 2011 March 22, 2011 "'''''' WHEREAS, Singapore Airlines began independent operations in October 1972, arising from the earlier Malaysia- Singapore Airlines formed in 1966, and traces its roots to Malayan Airways which began as a small, regional carrier in 1947; and WHEREAS, at its launch in 1972, Singapore Airlines had a modest fleet of 10 aircraft, a staff of 6,000 and a route network spanning only 22 cities in 18 countries, WHEREAS, in 1980, Singapore Airlines initiated daily Boeing 747 passenger service and thrice-weekly Boeing 707 cargo service at Los Angeles International Airport; and WHEREAS, in 1991, Singapore Airlines launched Boeing 747 cargo service at Los Angeles International Airport; and WHEREAS, in 2004, Singapore Airlines served Los Ange.les and made aviation history with the longest non-stop commercial flight in the world, direct from Los Angeles to Singapore, a distance of over 9100 miles, using the new Airbus 340-500 aircraft for the 18 hour journey; and WHEREAS, in 2008, Singapore Airlines introduced the world's first all-Business Class flight service between Los Angeles and Singapore with the second longest duration in the world (following the airline's non-stop flight from Newark to Singapore); and WHEREAS, in February 2010, Singapore Airlines completed the world's first multi-sector demonstration flight, utilizing air traffic management best practices to achieve fuel savings of more than 10 tons and a reduction in carbon emissions of more than 33 tons; and WHEREAS, Singapore Airlines prides itself on outstanding service and customer satisfaction, with a cabin crew among the most recognized in the industry representing the airline's commitment to offering friendly and efficient in- flight service; and WHEREAS, Singapore Airlines has won awards in the global airline industry, including being named one of Fortune magazine's top 50 World's Most Admired Companies for 2010, and earning the top spot in the Airline category; and WHEREAS, Singapore Airlines was voted Best International Airline by readers of Conde Nast Traveler magazine and Travel + Leisure magazine for 2010, maintaining the top spot in the Conde Nast poll for 22 of the past 23 years and in the Travel + Leisure poll for the 15th year running; and WHEREAS, Singapore Airlines was named Best Airline in the World in 2009 for the sixth consecutive year by the readers of Global Traveler and winning the inaugural Best All-Business Class Airline in 2009; and WHEREAS, Singapore Airlines won Air Transport World's prestigious Airline of the Year award for 2008 and was voted Airline of the Year in 2009 by subscribers to the Official Airline Guide; and WHEREAS, Singapore Airlines will launch service with the Airbus A380 at LAX on March 27, becoming the second airline to serve Los Angeles with this fuel-efficient, quiet, and clean aircraft: NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that by adoption of this resolution, the Los Angeles City Council hereby declares March 22, 2011 as Singapore Airlines Day in the City of Los Angeles, C) Presented by t/1.1A j?JJJ ::0, "..
