INFORMATION TO USERS This material was produced from a microfilm copy o f the original document. While the most advanced technological means to photograph and reproduce this document have been used, the quality is heavily dependent upon the quality of the original submitted. The following explanation of techniques is provided to help you understand markings or patterns which may appear on this reproduction. 1. The sign or "target" for pages apparently lacking from the document photographed is "Missing Page(s)". If it was possible to obtain the missing page(s) or section, they are spliced into the film along with adjacent pages. This may have necessitated cutting thru an image and duplicating adjacent pages to insure you complete continuity. 2. When an image on the film is obliterated with a large round black mark, it is an indication that the photographer suspected that the copy may have moved during exposure and thus cause a blurred image. You will find a good image of the page in the adjacent frame. 3. When a map, drawing or chart, etc., was part of the material being photographed the photographer followed a definite method in "sectioning" the material. It is customary to begin photoing at the upper left hand corner of a large sheet and to continue photoing from left to right in equal sections with a small overlap. If necessary, sectioning is continued again — beginning below the first row and continuing on until complete. 4. The majority of users indicate that the textual content is of greatest value, however, a somewhat higher quality reproduction could be made from "photographs" if essential to the understanding of the dissertation.

  • “The Social Cut of Black and Yellow Female Hip Hop” Erick Raven
“The Social Cut of Black and Yellow Female Hip Hop” Erick Raven University of Texas at Arlington May 2020 Abstract Korean female hip hop artists are expanding the definition of femininity in South Korea through hip hop. In doing so, they are following a tradition first established by Black female musical performers in a new context. Korean artists are conceiving and expressing, through rap and dance, alternative versions of a “Korean woman,” thus challenging and attempting to add to the dominant conceptions of “woman.” This Thesis seeks to point out the ways female Korean hip hop artists are engaging dominant discourse regarding skin tone, body type, and expression of female sexuality, and creating spaces for the development of new discourses about gender in South Korean society. Contents Introduction – Into the Cut ................................................ 1 Chapter I – Yoon Mi-rae and Negotiating the West and East of Colorism ............................................................. 12 Chapter II – The Performing Black and Yellow Female Body ................................................................................ 31 Chapter III – Performing Sexuality ................................. 47 Chapter IV – Dis-Orientation .......................................... 59 Conclusion .................................................................... 67 Works Cited .................................................................... 70 Introduction – Into the Cut Identities are performed discourse; they are formed when those who identify as a particular personality perform and establish a discourse in a particular social context. As George Lipsitz states, “improvisation is a site of encounter” (61). In South Korea, female Korean hip hop is the site of a social cut in dominant culture and has become a space of improvisation where new, counter-hegemonic identities are constructed and performed. In this Thesis, I argue that Korean female hip hop artists are enacting a social rupture by performing improvised identities.

Crafted for the Male Gaze: Gender Discrimination in the K-Pop Industry By Liz Jonas1 Abstract This paper explores the ways in which the idol industry portrays male and female bodies through the comparison of idol groups and the dominant ways in which they are marketed to the public. A key difference is the absence or presence of agency. Whereas boy group content may market towards the female gaze, their content is crafted by a largely male creative staff or the idols themselves, affording the idols agency over their choices or placing them in power holding positions. Contrasted, girl groups are marketed towards the male gaze, by a largely male creative staff and with less idols participating.

Travail Personnel Korean Entertainment Nom: Alves Chambel Prénom: Carolina Classe: 6G3 Tutrice: Amélie Mossiat 2019/2020 Introduction Hello, my name is Carolina and I am 14 years old. My 2019/2020 TRAPE is about Korean Entertainment! I have been into K-Pop for almost 3 years and I have always been researching lots of things about Korean celebrities, their activities and their TV shows. Since I was a child, I have always been very curious about the Asian culture, even though I thought they were gangster. As I grew up, I have become more and more connected to their culture. Then, at the end of 2016, I listened to my first K-Pop song ever. I was 10 years old and I was in primary school when I got to know EXO, the first group I listened to. They had a big impact in my life because in that moment I was struggling mentally and physically... The only thing that made me happy, was listening to their songs! They would make feel better in every way possible, once I listened to some music, I’d completely forget about my worries. It was always the best part of my days. That is why I have grown attached to K-Pop songs, dances and singers. Table of contents WHAT WERE THE MOST FAMOUS SERIES (KOREAN DRAMAS)? (2019) IS IT POPULAR IN OTHER COUNTRIES? Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia [email protected] Abstract This study is about women stereotypes in Korean pop music, specifically in girl group songs. There are six songs as the data of this study, which are Itzy with “Dalla Dalla” and “Icy,” CLC with "No“ and ‘Me,” and Mamamoo with “Yes I am” and “HIP.” This present study aims to give a new perspective on how the issue of women stereotype is implied in Korean girl groups’ songs’ lyrics. Since the issues of gender stereotypes are still prevalent in our everyday life, people tend to take gender issues for granted. The present study mainly analyzes how women are constructed through the songs and determine whether the songs confirm or subvert the stereotype. By using qualitative method, the study uses the theory of gender stereotype traits by Evans and Davies (2000) and the theory of stereotypical gender traits by Copenhaver (2002). The study reveals that women, especially in Korea, are more aware of the beauty standards issue in society. They try to change women’s way of thinking and not to be bound by the stereotypes through their songs’ lyrics. Fans often times look up to them and see that them breaking stereotypes shows that it's okay to do the same without having to get judged. Although there are also flaws within the industry such as cultural appropriation and double standards with boy groups and girl groups, K-POP's heavy influence on society has a major impact on culture and how we perceive what is considered "masculine" and "feminine". It has challenged beauty standards. In the K-POP industry, it's much more common to see men use beauty products.

Since many of these fans never see their idols in the flesh, idols are now making themselves more available through an increasing number of channels, including live-streams or mobile games.
