We flew with Apollo from Copenhagen to Corfu with just seats, hotel booked separately. We took off 9 AM and landed 9.30 AM local time at a cloudy and a little bit rainy Corfu. A pre-booked Fiat was quickly picked up at the airport. With GPS in the mobile we easily found the very good five star hotel Kortokali Bay just 7 km N the airport. We had to wait in the reception until 2 PM to get our room. The stay on Corfu was spent with swimming in the mornings and excursions during the days. It was easy to drive around the island and the roads were good but sometimes quite narrow. Itinerary Saturday 11th Just transportation to the hotel and some walking in the proximity. He comes to our village every year from his home in Cheltenham, sometimes several times, and has taken to here- abouts like a bird to the sky. He owns a parcel of the New Cactus Hilton, on which the event will take place. He has threatened to take his land away if anyone up- sets him. Last year he went to the sound-check and broke several drum-kits-not belonging to him of course- just to show us he can hit drums as hard as anyone else. And he has persuaded the other members of his long- suffering band- he must have got them drunk- to come and join the party.     ISSUE 32 SPRING 2012 EDITOR’S MESSAGE As last year’s ESA conference declared, Europe and sociological research are both in the midst of turbulent times. The single European currency and many states are struggling to cope with the fallout of an ongoing global economic crisis. At the same time, researchers across Europe find them- selves under greater pressure due to reforms of their higher education systems and an increased market orientation of national and European funding bodies. In short, changes are rapidly taking place that possess long lasting implications for Europe’s sociological community and European societies.
