As a feminist, I oppose sex discrimination of all sorts. However, I also support freedom of religious expression. How do I balance these conflicting values? Should I tear up our contract? J.L., New York This culture clash may not allow you to reconcile the values you esteem. Though the agent dealt you only a petty slight, without ill intent, you're entitled to work with someone who will treat you with the dignity and respect he shows his male clients. If this involved only his own person -- adherence to laws concerning diet or dress, for example -- you should of course be tolerant. But his actions directly affect you. And sexism is sexism, even when motivated by religious convictions. -

Although there are many things to wonder at in this city, most ofthem are works ofhuman beings. Only tourists wonder at the human works, and being a New Yorker, I cannot act as a tourist. It was good to have some thing from G-d to wonder at, even though it was only leaves. Wondering is an inspiring sensation. A sense of wonder insures that our rela¬ tionship with G-d is not static. It keeps us in an active relationship, and protects us from davening or fulfilling any other mitzvah merely by rote. A lack of excitement, of curiosity, of surprise, of wonder severs our attachment to what we do. Worse: it arouses G-d's disappointment I wonder most at our propensity to cease wondering. None of us would consciously decide to deprive our prayers and actions of meaning. Yet, most of us are not much bothered by our lack of attachment to our tefilot and mitzvot. We are too comfortable, too certain that we are living properly. That is why I am happy that we hosted the Wednesday Night Lecture with Rabbi Riskin and Dr. Ruth. The lecture and the controversy surrounding it certainly woke us up. We should not need or even use controversy to wake ourselves up. However, those of us who were joined in argument over the lecture were forced to confront some of the serious divisions in the Orthodox community, and many of its other problems. -

Among the benefits of more space, more privacy, and a great new location, I was also looking forward to having my own piece of planet earth for gardening and enjoying nature. The first spring was glorious, as surprise-after-surprise from the previous owners sprung out of the ground. First were the sprigs of hyacinth -- the first taste of spring. The maples stretched magenta leaves over our front and side yards like a red carpet. I knew I had azalea bushes -- but who knew they would flower in an eye-popping shade of hot pink? The lilies were gorgeous three-toned purple princesses. The rhododendron unfolded next -- colossal blossoms of deep purple and white. The roses by the picture windows were pink and red. The biggest surprise were the peonies -- my favorite flowers -- which were hidden beneath the ground all winter. They started as determined stalks that looked startlingly like burgundy asparagus before filling in with (cont. on p. 3) CoMing Full CirCle Shavuot: Separating Milk and Meat Penina Taylor Rabbi Yaakov Bienenfeld I was raised in a secular Jewish home. Is Judaism ‘Sex Positive?’ Understanding Trends in Recent Jewish Sexual Ethics Rebecca Epstein-Levi Introduction hen I tell people that I am a scholar of Jewish sexual eth- Wics, I am sometimes asked just what Judaism has to say about the matter. I usually give the unhelpful academic refrain of “well, it’s complicated…” or I tell the well-worn joke about “two Jews, three opinions.” The fact of the matter is that Jewish thinking on sexual ethics, as with most other things, is conten- tious, multivocal, and often contradictory. However, there are actually two levels on which this question operates. The first level is what the multiplicity of classical Jewish traditions have offered directly on matters of sexual conduct—what “Judaism says about sex.” The second level is the way modern and con- temporary thinkers have presented classical sources on sex and sexuality—what “Jewish thinkers say Judaism says about sex.” In the past seventy years or so, as the academic study of Jewish ethics has gained an institutional foothold and as rab- bis and Jewish public intellectuals have had to grapple with changes in public sexual mores and with the increasing reach of popular media, both of these levels of the question have, at least in Jewish thought in the U.S. and Canada, exhibited some clear trends. Here, I offer an analysis and a critique of these trends, especially in academic Jewish sexual ethics as it cur- rently stands, and suggest some directions for its future growth. Often the only readily available books or web sites present an Orthodox viewpoint. This Guide is meant to provide an introduction to selected practical halachic topics from the viewpoint of Conservative Judaism. In addition, it gives some instruction on how to conduct various home rituals, and gives basic guidance for some major life events and other situations when a Rabbi may not be immediately available. Halacha is a guide to living a religious, ethical and moral life of the type expected and required of a Jew. Recently I’ve been going through my clothes to find some things that I think I packed away. In looking at how fash- ionable they are, I came to realize that most of the clothes are classic styles – so not much changes in my wardrobe! Certainly, I add to it and remove worn items, but I have a look that suits me and I don’t deviate from it too much. A few new accessories or more stylish colors, and I’m good to go for another season or more. But what does Judaism say about clothing? What comes to mind is tznius or tzniut. For many Jews, the concept of tznius equates with how one dresses, and particularly how women dress. It often is interpreted as modest or modesty. Jews are not the only people to consider this question. Muslims and Christian groups also look to women to dress modestly. And if you do a Google search for modest clothing, you will find many places where you can acquire it. According to Rabbi David Silber, dean of Drisha Institute, in an article published by Forward magazine, tzniut is more than just skirt length. Look in the Torah and you’ll find that the word does not address women or clothing. Therefore, Rabbi Silber suggests that we not limit our understanding of tzniut to only dress. The Hebrew root for this word means “hidden”, but Rabbi Silber encourages us to think of it as “acting humbly in our daily lives.” This fall, the Drisha Institute offered a three-part lecture series about tzniut.
