The pizmon from the erev Y"K slichos, "Machar Yihyeh Haos Hazeh", is said at this seudah. • The seuda hamafsekes is after mincha. Kreplach are eaten at this seudah. • Mikveh is a chiyuv for men • Mikveh for women - It is a long-standing minhag (esp. among Chasidim) for women, and girls under Bas Mitzvah, to go to the mikveh erev Y"K (girls over Bas Mitzvah should not go to the mikveh until after they are married). This immersion does not remove the status of nidda. It is for spiritual purity. (The women's mikveh in Baltimore is open for a short period of time erev Y"K morning for this purpose. Call the mikveh for information.) • Kapparos: chicken or money. If using a chicken, it should be waved over each family member's head in their presence. Give tzedaka - $5/person. If using money, use coins, not paper money, waving the coins over each person's head. We are grateful for all the good we receive from behemot, from domesticated animals. ! THE H.A. YOM KIPPUR SOULVIVOR GUIDE 5776 ! !1 Dear Reader, There is one mitzvah that a person who has never sinned can ever accomplish, that is the mitzvah of teshuva. The very day of Yom Kippur calls upon us to reach deep within ourselves and to return to our ultimate source, Hashem. It is a tremendous gift that hashem accepts our teshuva. It is an even greater gift that it is considered a mitzvah! I once had a student who said “I know Rabbi how bad I was and I am sorry!” I responded by saying YOU are not bad only your actions. This student’s mistake is one we often make. While regret is an essential part of the teshuva process we must not confuse that with shame, the error of thinking that we are our actions and therefore we are bad. Hashem’s acceptance of our teshuva is a testament of his love for us. It reaffirms the notion that our essence is and always will be pure. Yom Kippur we are given stronger tools to polish our neshamot and reach ever greater heights of connection to Hashem. It is my hope that this Soulvivor Guide will enrich your Yom Kippur and encourage you to return! This booklet was written by fourteen young men and women in Hebrew Academy High School. These !2 creative students voluntarily took their time to contribute and create this wonderful and insightful guide. The students and I would like to thank Ms. Tia Ayrton for her wonderful input. It is a pleasure to begin the year as a community, joining old friends and new, praying and learning together. This year, Rabbi Yael Levy will not be with us at the services for the Yamim Noraim. We will miss Rabbi Yael, and hope that her sabbatical time is fulfilling and energizing and that we will learn much from her when she returns to Mishkan Shalom in November. Our services will feel different this year, but the depth and talent of our many members who will participate will add real beauty to them. Truth, justice, and peace are the ‘defendants’ and there is a judge/rabbi. The trial is mediated by a narrator/counsel who provides context and asks questions to each of the defendants. Rabbi London will sit in chair next to white table. Truth, justice and peace will stand off to the side. Counsel will enter via the ramp. I call this Beit Din, this Rabbinic Court, to order!! Today we will be hearing the case of the Jewish People versus Truth, Justice, and Peace. ROSH HASHANAH JEWISH NEW YEAR “The LORD spoke to Moses, saying: Speak to the Israelite people thus: In the seventh month, on the first day of the month, you shall observe complete rest, a sacred occasion commemorated with loud blasts. You shall not work at your occupations; and you shall bring an offering by fire to the LORD.” (Lev. 23:23-25) ROSH HASHANAH, the first day of the seventh month (the month of Tishri), is celebrated as “New Year’s Day”. On that day the Jewish people wish one another Shanah Tovah, Happy New Year. ש נ ָׁהָׁטוֹב ָׁה Rosh HaShanah, however, is more than a celebration of a new calendar year; it is a new year for Sabbatical years, a new year for Jubilee years, and a new year for tithing vegetables. April 2015 5775 USY’s Scooby Jew Convention In This Issue: By Mayer Adelberg On February 20, 2015, over one hundred teens converged on the Flamingo From the Rabbi Resort and Spa in Santa Rosa, California. It was a weekend of Jewish Page 3 learning, ruah (spirit) and fun, and the theme for this fantastic convention was, none other than, Scooby Doo. The three-day convention, called ISS (Intensive Study Seminar), was the first convention of the year where eighth graders were invited. Although President’s they were part of their own semi-separate convention (8th Grade Shabba- Perspective ton), they still intermingled with the USYers for some programs and for Page 5 meals. ISS was a weekend of Judaism and Jewish learning. As Calendar a youth group Pages 14 & 15 which is part of the Conservative movement, New Frontier USY incorporates prayer April experiences into Birthdays our conventions; Page 21 for ISS these were held in transformed hotel rooms. With programs that cover Judaism as well as programs that completely relate to USYers’ lives, it is an important 100% club element that takes planning and serious consideration. At ISS, we had programs such as Israeli Capture the Flag, Pe’ah it Forward (discussing Pages 23 & 24 Sh’mittah), Parsha Palooza, and Jewpardy (Jewish Jeopardy.) “ISS was an incredible experience where I got to meet people who other- contributions wise I wouldn’t have even known existed,” says Danielle Horovitz, an 8th Pages 25 & 26 grader in Saratoga USY attending her first convention. -

High Holy Days 5782 Thi El Mo na ls o: High Holy Days 5782 Wel to Elu M or Elul is the last month of our Jewish calendar, the month when we transition from one year to the next. For generations, Jews across the world have spent this month of Elul reflecting on the previous year and thinking ahead to the new one. We invite you to do the same, and present the Elul Moon Journal! This journal invites folks of all ages to lean into the spiritual work of the High Holy Days season and 5782, the new year, with nightly journal prompts or discussion questions, and opportunities to track the moon’s progress through Elul. Journal one night, every night, or something in between. Resd to Pp n Tac t Mo Each evening of Elul corresponds to a page in this journal. The Hebrew dates you see on each page are the dates that begin at sundown those evenings. If the question stirs something in you, respond to it. If you find your pencil moving to a different beat, follow your heart. Feel free to incorporate a combination of writing and drawing. Our ancestors used the phases of the moon to track time. So too can we find meaning in centering ourselves around its waxing and waning. Before or aer your journal entry each night, hold up your paper to a window through which you can see the moon. Then trace it. Over the course of Elul, watch the skies and your journal pages as the moon grows from a sliver at the start to its full position by Rosh HaShanah. -

Yom Kippur Customs: •Wearing White There are those who teach that we wear white on Yom Kippur to be like the angels with whom we sing Kadosh! Kadosh! Together we yearn to ascend, to be lighter, more clear, clean, pure and transparent. And also, wearing white and particularly wearing simple organic fibers like linen or cotton, approximates the garments that we wear when die and are buried. Indeed, you may have already noticed among us those who wear a kittel, a simple white cotton robe worn over the clothing. Why is this? First it is important to know that when we die, in Jewish tradition, we are all lovingly bathed and dressed for burial in a white linen or cotton outfit, simple, light and entirely biodegradable (as is the simple wood coffin). We are all dressed in white, simple pure and and clean, and the same for everyone - men and women, rich and poor. All distinctions cease. When we fast on Yom Kippur it is not a punishment – it is only to help us be lighter like the angels, and like the souls of those who have died. We wear white, sometimes even the exact garment in which we expect to be buried -- – like a kittel– -- because we understand that Yom Kippur is designed to bring us to the edge of our own death. We know that the most scrupulous honesty we may ever engage in might well be on our deathbed, as we review our lives and make amends if we still can. The honesty of one who faces death is amplified by the uselessness of pretending and lying any more.
