The team includes 13 members of the 1991 Indiana All-Star squad. Five other all-state players are included to recognize the top of Indiana’s high school class of 1991. 1991 Indiana All-Stars include Mr. Basketball Glenn Robinson, Alan Henderson, Daimon Beathea, Brandon Brantley, Brian Evans, Andy Elkins, Marlon Fleming, Jeff Massey, LaMar Morton, Steve Nicodemus, Andre Owens, LaSalle Thompson and Chris Wilburn. The remaining five, named to various all-state teams are: Lance Barker, Tony Etchison, Jerry Freshwater, Chad Gilbert and Jason Williams. All Mens Silver Anniversary Team members will be honored at the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame’s Annual Men’s Banquet on Wednesday, March 23, 2016. A midday reception, free and open to the public, will be held at the Hall of Fame museum in New Castle. The evening banquet will take place at the Primo Banquet Hall, which is located on the south side of Indianapolis. Reservation forms will be made available in early 2016, or tickets can be reserved now through the Hall’s website at www.hoopshall.com. 6 shaq and kobe Why study sports? The obvious answer—sports are interesting. Of course we are not saying that other topics examined in economics are not interesting. Well . maybe we should say this. Someone should at some point say that a few topics ex- amined by economists—mind you, we are not naming names and we are just say- ing a few—are really not interesting. The topics are not interesting to us, our stu- dents, or probably most non-economists. We are not even sure these topics are interesting to most other economists. So we are drawn to sports because we find this subject to be interesting. There is more to the story. As we noted at the onset, with sports you have numbers. Oo- dles and oodles and oodles—that is a scientific term which means “a whole bunch” or “lots and lots”—of numbers are generated in the world of sports. Each and every day a game is played somewhere. In that game people record the actions of each individual player. This record, or the data, can be used by economists to address an assortment of interesting and entertaining questions.1 What is the purpose of tracking all the data collected in sports? We talked about this in Chapter One.
