Jindabyne Central School JINDABYNE CENTRAL SCHOOL TERM 4 | WEEK 2 NEWSLETTER Oct 24 2016 Jindabyne Central School 8 Park Road Jindabyne NSW 2627 Ph.: 6456 2346 Fax: 6456 1082 http://www.jindabyne-c.schools.nsw.edu.au/ IN THIS ISSUE PRINCIPALS MESSAGE PRINCIPALS MESSAGE Kindy Start PRIMARY NEWS We welcome our cohort of new parents to the Kindy Start program commencing this SECONDARY NEWS week. It was wonderful to see new additions to our Jindabyne Central School family. CAREER CORNER The Kindy Start program is the first day of the partnership between the school, SPORT DIARY DATES teachers and new Kindy parents in relation to a child’s education. Our aim is that COMMUNITY NEWS during the shorten thirteen years of education we will make a significant contribution that will last a life time. The initial steps of the program are about making your child feel at home in the classroom and in helping all children come together in our learning community. This learning community is made up of unique individuals, each with his or her learning styles, interests, history, hopes and dreams so please ensure that you communicate with us about your child. Gym Extension The progress of the gym extension is on track and we envisage the completion date to be 25 November. This will enable the school to conduct its formal K-6 and 7-12 Assemblies as scheduled at the end of term 4. We have been fortunate with the weather and building progress to date and hope this will continue. P&C Meeting 26 October at 6pm The Jindabyne Central School P&C will meet on Wednesday 26 October at 6pm. Of interest to parents and community members will be the proposed changes to Kalkite Street as part of the refurbishment by council. This could mean significant change to traffic flow, all through traffic on Kalkite Street etc. Joseph Vescio General Manager, Dean Lynch Administrator and Gary Shakespeare will be at the P&C meeting to provide an overview of the options for the Snowy River Avenue Upgrade. I would ask parents to come along. Please find attached plans of the options. The options are detailed below with some of the advantages and disadvantages of each option. Option 1 Open Kalkite Street to all traffic in both directions. Sufficient safety awareness measures commensurate with formal school crossing will be installed. Provides five additional car parking spaces and creates off street bus parking facility. Option 2 Open Kalkite Street to one way traffic all flowing park Road to Snowy River Avenue direction. Dedicated left side bus land and formalised off street bus parking area. Provides five additional car parking spaces. Disadvantage is that the passenger are exiting vehicle not on a pedestrian footpath and potentially need to deal with Kalkite street being used as a traffic short cut in peak winter periods. 1 JINDABYNE CENTRAL SCHOOL Option 3 Open Kalkite Street to one way vehicle traffic flowing Snowy River Avenue to Park Road, dedicated bus lane flowing as per current situation (park Road to Snowy River Avenue). Provides five additional car parking spaces and creates off street bus parking facility. Advantage is that the passenger are exiting vehicle directly onto a pedestrian footpath and no incentive for drivers to cut through Kalkite Street onto Kosciusko Rd. Option 4 Do nothing. A formalised off street bus parking area will be formed. No additional car parking spaces will be achieved outside of the increase in the main car park. Currently there are issues of congestion in Park Road which affects ability to respond to emergency situations. Kalkite Street is underutilised for the majority of the time outside peak periods in the morning and afternoon. Permeability of the town is minimised. 2 JINDABYNE CENTRAL SCHOOL PRIMARY NEWS GRANDPARENTS DAY A HUGE SUCCESS K-6 students and teachers invited Grandparents and Grand friends to visit the school last Friday October 21st with 219 grandparents attending the day. KN led the Grandparent assembly and sung a beautiful rendition of the song ‘We Love You’. Grandparents and Grand friends visited classrooms to share in the learning experiences of their grandchildren and told them what it was like when they went to school. 3 JINDABYNE CENTRAL SCHOOL MUFTI DAY – Friday 14 October Years K – 6 once again got into the spirit of MUFTI Day, wearing something bright and happy to support Camp Quality and esCarpade to create the best quality of life for kids living with cancer. Anna Thorntons class looked the par however poor Koby had just returned from Sydney and didn't realise it was mufti day...but took part in the day with a smile! MUFTI Days not only give students the opportunity to express themselves in costume or casual clothes they also aim to create awareness and remind students of the important causes thye are supporting by dressing up and donating a gold coin. CAMP QUALITY TO VISIT JCS Camp Quality’s car esCarpade is coming to Jindabyne Central School near the bus shelter with their wacky cars and a Puppet Show for the students and public to see. Come and see all the action Monday October 24 9:30am JCS ART STUDENTS GETTING WRAPPED IN L’ETAPE For the first time ever, a Tour de France event is coming to Australia. L’Étape Australia by le Tour de France will be taking place in the Snowy Mountains on December 3 and the area is expecting over 4000 riders and 10 000 people for the weekend event. ‘Lets Wrap L Etape’ is a Jindabyne business network initiative to get the community to show support for the event by wrapping Jindabyne in bright yellow! JCS students are getting involved by painting yellow bloomers made from recycled plastic bottles that will be placed around town on roundabouts and other public places. What’s been happening in 6C? The buddy system that involves Year 6 students taking care of Kindergarten students is well respected at JCS. Students from 6C spent some time buddying reading in KN’s ‘Bear Cave’ and helping with their literacy group. 4 JINDABYNE CENTRAL SCHOOL Year 6C spent a fun morning playing with 2 lambs 'salty' and 'minty' that came to visit. Year 6C share some photos from their recent video conference with Korea where they were taught some traditional Korean games- Yutnori and jegichagi. Eager Preschoolers attend Kindystart 50 parents/carers and approximately 50 preschoolers attended the first of 5 Kindystart sessions that will be held every Thursday prior to the end of Term 4. The sessions will help children settle in for next year and give teachers an opportunity to spend time with and observe the new Kindergarten students to determine classes for 2017. 5 JINDABYNE CENTRAL SCHOOL 3O students reflect on their Video Conference with the Royal Botanic Gardens By Ryan Allen Last Thursday 3O had a video conference in the library and we met a scientist called Mary from the labs in Sydney Royal Botanic Gardens. She told us a lot about plants. We learnt about the biggest seed in the world which is a double coconut seed, the most endangered seed in world, how seeds grow and what they need to grow. We learnt that plants make their own food and that grass has more seed on it then a normal bunch of flowers. At the video conference we also learnt that coconut seeds are protected by a coat of husk that floats and is really hard. Mary also put some seeds in a tank of water and my class had to guess if they would float or sink. We saw some pictures of scientist studying some seeds and counting them. Then she showed us a seed vault the was -20 degrees Celsius with a fire alarm, water sprinkler’s on the roof and a generator. Next she showed us a picture of the place she works, she told us that they started in a tin shed and now they have a big building and science lab. Lastly we got to ask a few questions and mine was “what is the smallest seed in the world?” The answer was that there is a seed smaller then a grain of pepper. By Bella Caddy-Gammell. Last week my class and I went to a video conference in the school library to learn about seeds, plants and how they grow. The lady that showed us all of the seeds was Mary and Mary works as a scientist at the Royal Botanic Gardens. At the video conference we learnt about all different types of seeds and plants. Mary showed us a picture of the biggest seed in the world which is a double coconut seed which is endangered. It was very large. We also learnt that the most popular seed on earth is the grass seed because people grow grass all over the whole world, that’s pretty cool! I thought the video conference was very interesting, we got to learn lots of things about seeds and lots of things about plants. 3O Gardening and Learning in the Spring Sun 6 JINDABYNE CENTRAL SCHOOL SECONDARY NEWS YEAR 12 AWARDS DAY The Year 12 awards day was held on the last day of Term 3 that was a memorable recognition of the achievements made throughout the year and also celebrated the success of their student careers at JCS. Year advisor Kim Holmes gave a heartfelt address to the students and reminded them that they will always be linked by three words ‘Jindabyne Central School’. Kim also communicated a number of sentiments including ‘be courageous and set yourself goals, may realistic, some fanciful! And be optimistic’!’ The students were also addressed by past student John Hukins who shared some words of wisdom that its ok to have a Plan B and to go with it in life as he is living proof that having a Plan B can work.
