BACKGROUND Eco-Social Development Organization (ESDO) has started its journey in 1988 with a noble vision to stand in solidarity with the poor and marginalized people. Being a peoples' centered organization, we envisioned for a society which will be free from inequality and injustice, a society where no child will cry from hunger and no life will be ruined by poverty. Over the last thirty years of relentless efforts to make this happen, we have embraced new grounds and opened up new horizons to facilitate the disadvantaged and vulnerable people to bring meaningful and lasting changes in their lives. During this long span, we have adapted with the changing situation and provided the most time-bound effective services especially to the poor and disadvantaged people. Taking into account the government development policies, we are currently implementing a considerable number of projects and programs including micro-finance program through a community focused and people centered approach to accomplish government’s development agenda and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the UN as a whole. -

Impacts of Northwest Fisheries Extension Project (NFEP) on Pond Fish Farming in Improving Livelihood Approach

Haque2 1Department of Fisheries Biology and Genetics, 2Department of Fisheries Management, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh-2202, Bangladesh Abstract Investigation was carried out from June to August 2009. A total of 40 fish farmers were selected from northwest two upazila namely Debigonj (n=20) and Boda (n=20) where both men and women were targeted. Focus group discussion (FGD) and cross-check interview were conducted to get an overview on carp farming. From 1991-1995, 1996-2000 and after 2000; 17.5%, 45% and 37.5% of fish farmers started carp farming respectively. Average 77.5% of farmers acquired training from NFEP project while 10% of them from government officials. There were 55% seasonal and 45% perennial ponds with average pond size 0.09 ha. After phase out of NFEP project, 92.5% of fish farmers followed polyculture systems, while only 7.5% of them followed monoculture ones. Farmers did not use any lime, organic and inorganic fertilizers in their ponds before association with NFEP project. They used lime, cow dung, urea and T.S.P during pond preparation at the rate of 247, 2562.68, 46.36 and 27.29 kg.ha-1.y-1 respectively where stocking density at the rate of 10,775 fry.ha-1 after phase out of the project. Feeding was at the rate of 3-5% body weight.fish-1.day-1. -

Abu Zafar; E-mail: [email protected] ARTICLE INFO A B S T R A C T An investigation was conducted to have a clear idea on current aquaculture practices Received of 67 fish farmers in Birganj upazila, Dinajpur district for a period of six months from 03 July, 2020 October 2016- March 2017. Fish farmers were selected randomly from three villages of Moricha Union of Birganj upazila through questionnaire interview, FGD and cross Revised check interview and secondary information were used to assess the performances in 27 August, 2020 aquaculture activities. Most of the farmers (52.24%) had pond having the size range Accepted from 5 to10 decimal with the mean depth 4.44 ft. It was found that 79% of ponds 29 August, 2020 contained water throughout the year and 21% pond had water for a period of 6 to 8 months. The major culture species was Indian major carps along with Small Online Indigenous Species. About 76% farmer used feed in culture pond and none of the 31 August, 2020 farmers were found to take any measures for maintaining proper water quality. -

Hajee Mohammad Danesh Science and Technology University, Department of Civil Engineering, Bangladesh Keywords Abstract Shear wave velocity, In seismic analysis, shear wave velocity (Vs) is a valuable parameter for measuring the site Standard penetration resistance, effect of earthquake microzonation. Various methods have been explored to measure this Subsurface, key factor directly. Since measuring shear wave velocity directly is time consuming and Regression equation, expensive, researchers in various regions have been attempting to update empirical Dinajpur district. relationships between shear wave velocity (Vs) and other soil geotechnical properties such as SPT blow count, depth, vertical effective stress and so on. Geophysical tests associated with direct methods are not feasible in developing countries like Bangladesh, so the indirect method is more important. Due to the location of a fault line nearby, the Dinajpur district has previously undergone anomalous earthquakes. As a result, site characterization is important for enhancing seismic design considerations. Focused on an indirect approach, this paper mainly aims to propose a general correlation between shear wave velocity and standard penetration number in 13 upazilas of Dinajpur district for four soil categories (“all soils”, sand, clay, and silt). Finally, an approach was developed to find the overall correlations for the Dinajpur district by combining all of the data. The regression coefficient (R2) values were observed to vary in between 0.04416-0.6134 for “all soils”, 0.0593-0.668 for sand, 0.5911-0.7149 for clay and 0.5547-0.6794 for silt. -

The study was conducted three villages in Birampur upazila under Dinajpur district. Out of 442 populations, 88 women beneficiaries were randomly selected which constituted the sample. Data were collected during 20th February to 20th March,2009 using interview schedule. Coefficient of correlation(r) was computed in order to explore relationship between the selected characteristics of the women beneficiaries and their poverty alleviation. Only 4.5% population had high poverty alleviation while the highest proportion (61.4%) of the women had moderate poverty alleviation in participating BRAC micro-credit activities. The findings showed that age, family size and duration of involvement with BRAC had no relation with their poverty alleviation. Education, farm size, family income, Cosmo politeness, availability of BRAC micro-credit and attitude towards BRAC had positive relationship with their poverty alleviation. New loan is not issued until final repayment of installment as identified by the beneficiaries as the main problem.
