SCHOOL WEEKLY NEWSLETTER: - Monday 19 August 2019 SCHOOL WEEKLY NEWSLETTER: - Monday 19th August 2019 Kia orana, Pataka Kai (food house) Some of you would have noticed the lemons and oranges outside the school sitting in a https://www.patakai.co.nz/ Pataka Kai or food cupboard. Click on the link to find out more information. We have started our very own way of sharing food and other grocery items. The idea is you "take what you need and leave what you can". This is a pantry for the community, a way we can share with each other and where our students gain an understanding of giving. We are growing fruit and vegetables in the near future to share also. Teacher Only Day – Friday 6th September A teacher only day will be held on Friday the 6th of September, as a result, the school will be closed on this day. The staff will be attending a professional learning day in Tairua. Please mark this date on your calendars and ensure to make alternate arrangements for your children on this day. Thank you. New Website Layout Our school website has a new layout. Visit www.hikutaia.school.nz to see some of the new changes. The new layout is now mobile phone friendly with some new updates being implemented. We will continue to work on the site to make it user-friendly and a source of reliable up to date information for all. Ohinemuri Cross Country Congratulations to all of our cross country runners who represented Hikutaia last Friday. We were very fortunate with the weather and it was great to see the commitment and dedication of all involved. Students who came in the top six will be heading to the Thames Valley cross country on Wednesday 4th September in Ngatea. Nathan Makaire Wallis Nathan Makaire Wallis will be speaking in Thames this Wednesday. He is renowned for his work with the brain and early child development. If you can get along to this session I believe it would be very beneficial. School Assembly A school assembly will be held this Friday starting at 2.15 p.m. You are all welcome to come along and join in. Paeroa Upholstery – School Uniform On behalf of the School we would like to thank Paeroa Upholstery who have agreed to process our school uniform (includes logo and names – possibly a small charge for this). This should make it easier for parents to call into their shop to place your school order and payment. Slinkies Collection Thank you to our parents who have volunteered their time to do the slinks pick up which is well on the way. Hikutaia School Agricultural Day – Thursday 17th October Today, entry forms and a letter from the Agricultural Committee have been sent home with ALL children. Please check their bags/book bags for this important information. Please note that entries need to back at School no later than Friday 6th September to ensure we have the correct number of ribbons available on the day. If your child is interested in attending Group Day at Puriri School on the 19th October please call into the school office to pick up a form accordingly as these entries need to be at School no later than Thursday 20th September. Please note that NO LATE ENTRIES WILL BE ACCEPTED so if you are unsure complete a form as it is easier to scratch them on the day. The conditions were testing but each and every student did their best which was fabulous. We had some students attend Ohinemuri on Friday and they did us proud also. This week students will be practicing their speeches in preparation for presenting in week 7. We otherwise have a normal week of literacy, numeracy, passion projects/project based learning. Whaea Emma will be back with us on Wednesday. We have loved having Miss D with us this last week. Nga Mihi - Mrs Robinson, Matua Wayne. Room 5 Mrs Donovan Four children from Room 5 went through to the Cross Country at the Paeroa Domain on Friday. Henry came 4th and Ali came sixth, Ruby came ninth, and Jorja ran well also well done to you all. Room five is working away on their bilingual children's books this week. The children are writing about what they do at school, colours and dress up-occupations. They are having a lot of fun and can't wait to see their work turned into a book for other children to read. All speeches should be finished and being practiced by the end of today. Have a great week. In writing we are learning how to present our speeches and students will be practising reading their speeches at home this week. In Maths we are working on developing our number thinking and practising our strategies. On Friday we are visiting the Library to return and issue books. Have a great week. Room 3: Mrs Cameron Speeches went home last week for the children to practise. It is not necessary for them to remember the speech word for word but to feel confident standing in front of their peers and presenting it. We have been looking at geometry in numeracy this term. In particular 2D and 3D shapes. Thank you to those parents who have been sending along milk bottle lids to school, it was much appreciated. I have enough at the moment and will share on Seesaw this week what the children will be doing with them. Have a great week.     1 2015/16 Speed Limit Review Memo Information TO Infrastructure Committee FROM Sam Edlin - Roading Engineer DATE 12 May 2016 SUBJECT 2015/16 Speed Limit Review 1 Purpose of Report For the Infrastructure Committee to consider the proposed speed limits on Ferry Road and Hikutaia Factory Road, Hikutaia and Hikuai Settlement Road, Hikuai and provide a recommendation to Council. 2 Background Speed limits around New Zealand are currently calculated using the Land Transport Rule - Setting of Speed Limits 2003 (the Speed Limit Rule). The objective of the Speed Limit rule is to contribute to a safe and efficient road network by: Establishing speed limits of 50km/h in urban traffic areas and 100km/h on rural roads and motorways. Authorising road controlling authorities to designate urban traffic areas, to set speed limits other than 50km/h on urban roads and less than 100km/h on rural roads, and to set temporary speed limits associated with work on or near the road and for special events. Promoting national uniformity in speed limits by requiring road controlling authorities to apply a consistent method to translate national speed limits policy into a safe and appropriate speed limit for any given road. A safe and appropriate speed limit is one that: Is regarded as reasonable by drivers and residents. Matches the instinctive driving speed of the responsible driver as reflected by the 85th percentile measured speed Takes into account perceived, real and concealed hazards. Is willingly enforced by police (i.e. it is not expected that drivers will ignore the speed limits). Is consistent with national speed policies.

    SCHOOL WEEKLY NEWSLETTER: - Monday 24th June 2019 Kia ora koutou katoa, With only two weeks to go until the end of term two we still have lots to finish before the break. This Friday we have our senior Rippa team heading to Hamilton for the Waikato Triangular Tournament, two teams will be heading to Paeroa College for the Ki O Rahi and Tapuwae tournament and our Junior Epro 8 team will head to Katikati College for the finals series. Good luck to all participants, remember to play hard, play fair and represent your school and yourself with mana. Tomorrow we take on Matatoki School at basketball. This is a fun game organised for both schools to build relationships and friendly competition amongst each other. Kia kaha! As you are aware the teachers are currently voting to either accept or reject the governments latest collective agreement offer. Voting closes tomorrow. We are hoping to report a positive conclusion to this continuing dispute. I can confirm we have had our annual school audit of accounts and am happy to report that the annual financial statements presented fairly, this means they were free of misstatement or fraud and that there was no risk. Thank You A big thank you to Steve Walmsley for helping with the new ropes that have been added to the maypole. Kids are enjoying having this back in action.     SCHOOL WEEKLY NEWSLETTER: - Monday 16th September 2019 Kia orana, This term is nearly coming to an end and still with so much to do. Last week saw us appreciating the staff here at Hikutaia School, a great week and thank you to all those who participated by appreciating them. I wish Whaea Emma’s soccer teams all the best in tomorrow’s Soccer tournament in Thames. Thank you to the parents who have offered to help with supervision and or transport. Due to the outbreak of Measles in New Zealand we need to ensure that our immunisation register is up to date so that we can act quickly and efficiently if a case is diagnosed here in Hikutaia. Karen has been in contact with most parents/caregivers to obtain an immunisation certificate that confirms your child is fully or partially immunised. If your child’s immunisation has changed since they first started here please let Karen know as soon as possible. This week I am away attending a three day conference (Hui) in Rotorua. I will be back in School on Thursday, so if there are any issues please do not hesitate and see Mrs. Cameron. We have a few activities happening this week and next so please continue to read on. Thames Schools Speech Competition Well done to Quinn, Jesse, Kaeden and Milah who presented their speeches on Friday at the Thames School Speech Competition. You all did very well.
