A message from Huw Money Matters It should come as no surprise to anyone reading this if I say that we, as a Benefice, are in a financial mess. Last year, for St Mary’s and St Martin’s, our Income was £84,000 but our Expenditure was £100,000. St Peter’s was in a slightly better position - £68,000 and £74,000 – but there is no room for complacency there either. In fact one outside analyst recently concluded that, if we sat back and did nothing, the Benefice could be bankrupt by 2020. The good news is that no one has any intention of letting that happen. Back in March all three churches ran a Stewardship Campaign, where many people responded generously, either through one off gifts or by increasing their weekly giving. Each church has been holding fundraising events, such as the collection of old clothes back in the spring. St Mary’s recently held a Family Fun Day which was a great success. All sorts of people came along and gave liberally of their money and their hard work, so that just over £1,400 was raised.. In October St Peter’s will be hosting Arts Week, in December St Mary’s will hold its annual Christmas Concert, and St Martin’s are planning a sponsored Hymnathon for next year. People keep coming up with ideas, large and small, of things to do to help and there is an enormous determination to turn this problem around. However, we all need to play our part. If every member on the Electoral Roll increased their giving by £5 a week we would soon be back in surplus – and how many of us spend that amount on treats for ourselves every week? However, God wants our vision to be bigger than the church alone. My vision for this Benefice is for us to reach a point where, instead of worrying about paying our bills, we are discussing which charities we want to support, at home or abroad. We live in a world full of need; God has generously given us all sorts of good things and we are called to follow his example by giving generously to others. I know many of you have particular good causes you support. It may well be that, especially when the news is full of so many natural disasters, your immediate response is, “I can’t give any more to the church right now, because I need to increase my Standing Order to Christian Aid (or Tear Fund, Oxfam, the Red Cross, or so many others)”. In which case, my response is – Fantastic! Give as God is prompting you, and I feel sure that all - 1 - our needs will be met. Those are easy words to write; putting them into action is an exciting challenger for us all. A note from the Editors When a friend mentioned to a local person in church that the Benefice was short of money, this person responded that church parishes are always short of money, and so what?? People like that seem to have an naïve view, somehow expecting our Parish to have a special relationship with the Bank, whereby debts can be wished away, or perhaps prayed away, and that an accumulating imbalance of our books will be miraculously taken care of by God. Try walking on water! For the most part it doesn’t work, however hard we pray, so it’s better to put your hand in your pocket and buy a ticket for the ferry. Many churches have had to close in past years, with declining numbers of parishioners and mounting costs. There is no reason at all why this should be the fate of any of our churches – our parishioners are numerous enough and have a combined income more than sufficient to keep Benefice debts easily at bay – and even to achieve Huw’s goal of supporting charities that we would all like to help together. So please support Huw’s appeal – NOW - and again in the future, as needed!. The problem will not go away. Huw mentions in his article ideas for fund-raising campaigns , big or small - it needs everybody not only to devise those ideas but also help bring them to fruition. (For example see the Table Top sale on page 5). From the Parish Registers The next entries in this department will be published in the November Parish Magazine. In memoriam Shirley Cox The funeral and interment of Shirley Cox took place at St Mary’s church on Friday 15 September, conducted by Revd Huw Mordecai. The church was full, with family and many friends present, and a choir of 14 local singers assisted in a beautiful service with Shirley’s favourite hymns. Five of Shirley’s grandchildren took part in readings that highlighted her devotion to a close family – an adored mother and grandmother. Her long - 2 - service to St Mary’s Choir was also celebrated; her capacity for friendship was remembered by us all. John William Batt-Rawden We have been advised of the death, aged 91, of John William Batt-Rawden, who lived in for many year at Yew Trees, Maidens Green, where he and his wife Valerie raised their five children Paul, Linda, Brigid, Mark and David. He was on the Winkfield Parochial Parish Council for many years and was a regular in the congregation at St Mary’s church, Winkfield. But he will perhaps have been best remembered as a teacher at Cranbourne Primary School, where we learn from a past pupil that “Mr Batt-Rawden was an unforgettable teacher, who had a way of grabbing one's attention, with his little anecdotes, before the lesson started”. He was also a leading local bee- keeper. Visit www.fosmw.com/parishmag/ to see longer article on web-version of this edition on page 21. Improving St Mary’s church yard - Huw recently received this pleasing letter: It was a nice surprise at St Mary’s church yard. We would like to say thank you so much for all the hard work by the volunteers. We didn’t like to see the church yard so overgrown in previous years, and not being able to find the graves. My father used to say “a little appreciation goes a long way”. - 5 - Royal British Legion Royal British Legion Cranbourne and Winkfield Branch, W.S are holding a Christmas Bazaar on Saturday 11 November commencing at 10am until 1pm in the King Edwards Church Hall, King Edwards Road, North Ascot, SL5 8PD. To book a table please phone 01344 890716. Wendy Sivyer Secretary Music and Merriment Concert This popular annual event will take place on Saturday 2nd December at 7:30pm in St Mary’s church, Winkfield. Anthony Hodson, who has chaired the concert-committee since 2011, said "We start planning very early in the year, as bringing the concert to reality is a major logistical exercise that represents a real team effort by many people, particularly the hard-working concert committee. This is a community concert, serving the community, and using the great talents available to us in the area, but we have to be ahead of the game to be the first to sign up our concert resources, with the date firmly in their diaries! "We build the programme for the concert so as to be certain that everybody who comes, young and old, will have a good time, and will leave with songs in their hearts, knowing that the Christmas season has truly begun. “We are delighted to have the 5T Brass Quintet performing as our core instrumentalists. The organist will be our local organ recitalist Jonathan Holl. Our main choir with be the Benefice Choir, which will be trained and directed by Carl Lister of Cranbourne, and we will have the ever-popular Junior Concert Choir, which I am training and directing myself this year." As ever, we will have local soloists, including highly talented youngsters, as well as audience carols that everybody will enjoy, and there will be much more, particularly the ever-popular mulled wine and mince-pies, supplied very kindly by St Mary’s Women’s Guild. Tickets are available on-line from www.fosmw.com or from Marian Stevens (01344 882918) or Lesley Philpot (01344 427561) or Margaret-Anne Hodson (01344 483347). Tickets cost only £12, or £6 for under-13s. See colour flyer on page 23 of the web version of this mag (www.fosmw.com/parishmag). New members needed for the Junior Concert Choir! At this time we are looking for new children to join the Junior Concert Choir, to supplement members with experience of recent years. Our members are mostly Y4 to Y7, but we can accept children outside these bounds if they - 6 - are keen. No experience with singing in a choir is needed, but enthusiasm for singing with an established group is important, and choir members should, if possible, attend all the rehearsals in preparation for the concert. These will take place at 6-7pm on the four Sunday evenings before the concert (that is, starting 5/11/17, 12/11/17, 19/11/17, 26/11/17, and with a rehearsal also at 11am on the morning of 2/12/17, the day of the concert. Please contact Anthony Hodson (Tel: 01344 483347 or email [email protected]) if you are interested. With some children this year in the choir for the fifth year running, you can be sure that singing the Junior Concert Choir will be a really special experience for yours! Patricia Powell News from around the Parish Bell Ringers Report September 2017 The tower ringers rang for a couple of weddings in August -it is always a pleasure to be included in such a special service. The opposition in the Lorna Newton Striking competition were unable to get a team together, so we are through to the final on 14 October – wish us luck!! Several of the ringers attended the Friends of St Mary’s Family Fun Day which had to be relocated to Carnation Hall due to the appalling weather forecast. Despite the rain it was a super event with a delicious ploughman’s lunch and a treasure hunt for the children as well as many stalls. The hand bell ringers are back in action after a few weeks break and practicing hard for the busy season ahead. We are looking forward to ringing at the Harvest Supper again on 30 September and plan to ring three pieces that we have not rung before. Do come along and join in – it was great fun last year! Bell Sunday is on 22 October this year with the opportunity to visit the bell tower to see our lovely bells as well as having a go. The hand bells will be performing “The Bells of St Mary’s” during the service which we have not rung for many years. This was a favourite of Betty Edey who was always so kind about, and appreciative of our ringing and enjoyed the bells so much we decided to ring the piece in her memory. There will be an opportunity to try bell ringing at the end of the service. As always we are grateful to asked to perform at the Christmas Music Concert on 2 December and will find a new piece to bring to you. This is always a special event so put it in your diaries! If you would like to have a go at the tower bells the practice night is Monday 7.45 – 9.15pm. Give Tony a ring or just turn up. Hand bell practice is Wednesday evening from 7.30 – 9pm. Give me a ring or just turn up! Jill Glennerster 01344-884071

The adult rehearsals will only take place on Thursdays for special services. However, both choirs will rehearse at 10.20 am on Sunday mornings. It was with great sadness we learned of the death of Shirley Cox. Shirley had been a member of St Mary’s choir for many, many years and was choir leader assisting Josh Tuffley. We shall all miss her very much. If you would like to join either the Junior or Adult choir please contact me. Lesley Philpot [email protected] 01344 427561 Friends of St Mary's Winkfield The Family Fun Day was a great success, and £1468.12 has been remitted to the PCC bank account for St Mary’s church with a small sum still to come from Gift Aid on donations to the event. Unfortunately, because of a bad weather forecast, we needed to change the venue from Margaret Blackburn’s beautiful home to Carnation Hall. The last-minute change was executed with a minimum of fuss and the day passed extremely well. Margaret and her helpers worked tirelessly preparing and transporting the delicious food from her home to the hall. We are extremely grateful to her. Guild members manned three stalls and the treasure hunt took place in the small lounge at Carnation Hall. The pipe sponsorship table was also in evidence. There was also a very useful Bric-a-brac stall that made nearly £200 – all going to St Mary’s church! Pipe-sponsorship on behalf of St Mary’s organ restoration fund has reached - 15 - very nearly ¾ of the target £7500, thanks to the generosity of the sponsors. To help with a big push to reach the target, please visit www.fosmw.com Our next event is the Christmas concert “Music and Merriment” which will take place on 2 December. Tickets are available in the church and on line – www.fosmw.com: £12 for adults and £6 for under 13 year olds. See also the article about the concert on page 6. If you haven’t already joined the Friends of St Mary’s Winkfield, please think about it. The Friends is a registered charity, formed to ensure St Mary’s Church is able to remain open, not only for regular Sunday worship, but also for Baptisms and Weddings and community events. Application forms are always in the Church. Lesley Philpot, Chairman St Mary’s Women’s Guild - Meeting 5 September After the Guild Prayer, Huw thanked Margaret Blackburn for her kind offer to host the Family Fun Day on 30 August and also for providing and organising the preparation of the food, and also the treasure hunt for the children. Huw also thanked Guild members who had attended and/or helped. Owing to the bad weather forecast the event was transferred to Carnation Hall. It was a great success raising about £1,500 with Gift Aid added on. Heritage Day Saturday 8 September. St Mary’s took part in the Heritage weekend on Saturday 8 September. The church was open for guided tours around the church, trips up the Bell tower and a chance to sponsor a pipe. Around 30 visitors visited the church with most of them going up into the Tower, and three people sponsored organ pipes. Refreshments, provided by Guild members, were available during the day. Doreen Potter – History of Flower Arrangement This was the title of the talk given by Doreen Potter who heads up the flower arrangers team at St Mary’s. She explained that the earliest known flower arranging began in ancient Egypt and the Egyptians regularly placed cut flowers in vases. The ancient Greeks and Romans also used flowers and herbs for adornment but they did not often use vases focusing instead on garlands and wreaths. The Chinese were making flower arrangements as far back as 207 BCE and the flowers were an integral component of religious teaching and medicine. Flower arranging reached Europe around 1000 CE and was particularly popular in churches and monasteries - 16 - where flowers and plants were used for food as well as for decoration. As crusaders came back from the Middle East they brought with them new and interesting plants and as a result European countries began experimenting with plants that were previously unknown to them. Doreen explained the different shapes and designs that were used by the different periods - Middle Ages, Renaissance, Baroque, Dutch-Flemish, French, Georgian and Victorian. When we finally reached the 20th century, both Constance Spry and Gertrude Jekyll were discussed. Constance Spry, who had a cookery and flower arranging school in Winkfield, made large bold flower arrangements mixing the colours. One or two Guild members had attended the school. Gertrude Jekyll however stressed the value of complimentary colours rather than contrasts. It was a fascinating discussion Mary Knight closed the meeting with a prayer. Lesley Philpot, President Spotlights Musical Theatre Group After many years John Woodward-Roberts is retiring as Chairman of the Spotlights Musical Theatre Group. Heather Garrett, Acting Chairman writes: “On behalf of the committee and members of SMTG, I want to take this opportunity to thank you sincerely for all your hard work, passion and support in Chairing the Spotlights Theatre Group over many years. We recognise and respect your decision to retire from chairing the group and active committee work, so that you can now enjoy your time focusing on performing.” See also page 18. St Mary's Music and Merriment Junior Concert Choir The Junior Concert Choir is a well-established feature of the popular St Mary’s Winkfield ‘Music and Merriment’ Christmas Concert on 2 December, 2017, at 7:30pm. Now we need some new singers for the 2017 concert! Give your child the opportunity to sing with others of their own age for an unforgettable experience. I remember his enthusiasm for bee-keeping. On a school trip to Tenby, he taught us not to put our soup spoons too far into our mouths, how to determine the sex of a baby by seeing if it had pronounced hips. His approach to teaching was refreshingly holistic.” Janet was an ex pupil of Kings Court and is now MD of Stem’s Florist Holborn. London. Living contemplatively
