Islam is very welcoming to local traditions. This is proven in this writing. Before there was Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism, and other faiths were deeply rooted in Indonesia. However, interestingly, after the arrival of Islam, those old traditions were maintained and were not displaced at all. Throughout history, from the era of the Prophet to the spread of Islam in Indonesia, no evidence has been found of an Islamic history of pillage, monopoly, or blackmail. On the contrary, Islam has protected, nurtured, and enriched the wealth of Indonesian culture. The birth of Nahdlatul Ulama (NU), Muhamaddiyah manifested in an Islam that is hospitable, peaceful, and accepting of ancestral traditions. So it is, too, with the Baduy; tradition and religion must be respective of one another, not hateful. The two can exist in parallel, proving the conclusion of this writing that indeed Islam is in line with tradition, such that one could say the greatest danger to society is not religion, but rather the individual who lacks a sufficient understanding of tradition and religion. -

The Baduy community who resides in the Village of Kanekes, the Sub-district of Leuwidamar, the District of Lebak, South Banten has maintained the Sundanese tradition, particularly in practicing swidden farming (ngahuma). According to the Baduy tradition, the commercial plants, including coffee, clove, cacao, teak, and rubber have been prohibited to cultivate in Baduy area. An urgent conservation call from endemic plants of Mount Salak, West Java, Indonesia I Robiansyah* and S U Rakhmawati Research Center for Plant Conservation and Botanic Gardens - LIPI. Jl.Ir.H. Juanda 13 Bogor 16003, West Java, Indonesia *[email protected] Abstract. Mount Salak is part of Mount Halimun-Salak National Park in West Java, Indonesia. It is home to five endemic plant species that are very susceptible to human interference due to their close proximity to human settlements. The deforestation rate of the area was 1,473 ha or 1.3% of the total area each year. Using eleven line transects with a total length of 44.76 km, the present study aims at providing data on current population and conservation status of these five endemic plant species. The results showed that there was an urgent conservation call from Mount Salak as all five targeted species were unable to be located. Furthermore, two invasive species that might possess serious threat to the endemic plants were observed during the survey: markisa (Passiflora sp.; Passifloraceae) and harendong bulu (Clidemia hirta; Melastomataceae). Based on these results, the present study assigned all the endemic species as Critically Endangered according to the IUCN Red List Category and Criteria. To conserve all the endemic plant species in Mount Salak, several recommendations were given and discussed. 1. For human, plants provide many essential services that underpin human survival and well-being, such as source of food, clothes, timber, medicines, fresh air, clean water, and much more. -

History of the Moluccan's Cloves as a Global Commodity � Hatib Abdul Kadir1 Abstract This paper focuses on the history of spice trade in Moluccas. Using two main approaches of firstly, Braudel, I intend to examine the histoty of spice trade in Moluccas in the 16th century in relation with the changing of the structure of economy that affected the social and political relations of the Moluccans. Secondly, applying Wallerstein approaches, I find out that trading activities from the 16th century until today have created a wide gap between post-colonial Moluccas and the Europeans. To conclude, I argue that economic activities have always been accompanied by forcing political power, such as monopoly and military power. Consequently, they have created unequal relations between the state and society. Keywords: Moluccas, Spice, Braudel, Wallerstein, State-society Relations A. Introduction My research is about the clove trade as a long distance commodity exchange in the sixteenth century. I choose to look at a limited timeframe in order to see the Moluccan trade in connection with Fernand Braudel's work. Braudel focuses on a global trade in the period that centered in the Mediterranean during the sixteenth century. This paper examines the kind of social changes occurring in Moluccan society when cloves became a highly valued commodity in trade with the Portuguese during the sixteenth century. The aim of the paper is to see how the patterns of this trade represent the Portuguese as the 'core' and the Moluccans as the 'periphery.' By using Braudel's approach, the aims of the paper are to explore the global history of society that is connected through unfair relations or colonization. -

However, cultivation is increasingly rare inWest Java region, and is found in some places only. One area where many people still grow Araceae plants is Cisoka Village, Cikijing Sub-district, Majalengka District, West Java Province, Indonesia. This paper aims to explain the reason for the cultivation of Araceae by the local community in the Village of Cisoka. This study used a combination of qualitative and quantitative methods, but the former was used more than the latter The primary data were collected through structured and semi-structured interviews, participant observation, exploration, and plant sample collection. The data were analyzed descriptively with emic and ethic approaches. The results of the study showed that 20 species and 13 varieties (landraces) of Araceae plants were used by the community. -

38 WacanaWacana Vol. Vol. 18 No.18 No. 1 (2017): 1 (2017) 38-64 Indonesian Chinese in the Netherlands and the legacies of violence in colonial and postcolonial Indonesia Alexander van der Meer and Martijn Eickhoff ABSTRACT After Indonesian independence in 1945, thousands of Indonesian Chinese repatriated to the Netherlands, the former colonizer. As opposed to other repatriates from Indonesia, who organized themselves into pressure groups and fought for a place in the national memory culture, the Indonesian Chinese in the Netherlands only formed strict socio-cultural associations and have generally stayed clear of identity politics. Usually, this divergence is attributed to the smooth integration and socio-economic success of the latter group, as well as to Chinese values, such as conflict avoidance. This article adds to this explanation by positing that this phenomenon has also been induced by the legacy of anti-Chinese violence in colonial and postcolonial Indonesia: respectively, Dutch discomfort to acknowledge the violent and discriminatory elements of its own colonial history, as well as a fear of offending the Indonesian government. Consequently, many Indonesian Chinese in the Netherlands have engaged in some form of public self-silencing.
