09/03/2017 11:01 your local councillor

Cllr James AstleyJames grew up in Romford and endured a brief stint living in before moving to Kelvedon in early 2014. His wife, Hannah, had grown up in the countryside and they’d been looking to move somewhere smaller (and nicer) than Grays, with a better sense of community, before starting a family. Having passed through Kelvedon many times on days out, and with its easy transport links back to Romford and to London, it was a natural choice to start looking there for their first house. They have a nine month old son, Benjamin. He works for a small charity in London, spending their money, and finds working in the charity sector to be rewarding and exciting. In his spare time, he is passionate about wildlife, local history and growing fruit and vegetables - keeping an allotment behind the Labour Club. At the Parish Council he is particularly interested in matters affecting social issues and the availability and accessibility of local services, planning issues, and what the Council can do to protect and enhance our environment. James joined the Parish Council in December, having seen the vacant position and being gently prodded towards it by a friend. He feels it’s important to play an active role in your community and to get involved with ensuring the village we all live in is the best it can be.

09/03/2017 11:01 pedal for the J’s is back On Sunday 30th April, Chelmsford’s annual cycle ride, Pedal for The J’s, returns to Admirals Park with a new route that even the youngest cyclist can enjoy. It is the eighth year of this popular event and cyclists have a choice of four rides - 15, 35 and 50 miles through the beautiful Essex countryside plus a new 2 mile Pedal in the Park ride - so there is a route for everyone. Pedal for The J’s is organised by The J’s Hospice charity which supports young adults with life-limiting conditions and their families in Chelmsford and across Essex, in the comfort of their own homes. The charity added the new 2 mile ride for families with younger children. Events Manager Jessica Dellow explained: “Families love taking part in Pedal for The J’s and our exciting new Pedal in the Park means that smaller children don’t miss out on the fun! They can get on their bikes, trikes or scooters and enjoy a safe route with their parents through Admiral’s Park to Central Park and then back again.” Around 1,000 cyclists are expected to take part. Staff at The J’s Hospice are delighted that Beaulieu - the exciting new development on the outskirts of Chelmsford by Countryside and L&Q - has agreed to be the headline sponsor the years and raised so much money in donations and for Pedal for The J’s for the third time. sponsorship. We hope that, with the new Pedal in the Park, this year’s event will be an even bigger success!” Jessica added: “Thank you to everyone at Beaulieu for their fantastic support Registration for the 15, 35 and 50 mile routes and for Pedal for The J’s and also to the 2 mile Pedal in the Park is open now – go to everyone who has taken part over www.thejshospice.org.uk for more information. 18

09/03/2017 11:01 A12 History By Nick Ezra March 2017 sees the fiftieth anniversary of the opening of the Kelvedon By-pass - a huge milestone in the history of our village. Kelvedon and Feering have stood on a major highway since the Romans built a road to connect London to Colchester. It seems that even way back then it was known only as a number, the Inter V, or route five. After being fairly neglected (but much used) for centuries, in 1696 it was made part of the network of ‘turnpike trusts’, or toll roads. At that time, the tolls were collected at the river crossing to enable traffic to Coggeshall to travel without a By the middle of the nineteenth century, the toll. For another hundred years or so, the road Eastern Counties Railway had opened, taking was well used. With Britain’s Royal Family having with it well over three quarters of the traffic very strong Germanic and Dutch connections, receipts for the turnpike trust. Kelvedon High the traffic to Harwich increased greatly, making Street had grass growing on it, a situation that the road much more in demand. continued into the early twentieth century, by which time the new County Councils had taken over all roads in the United Kingdom. After 1919, when the First World War had ended, a huge change in society occurred, subur with many of the men coming home from war sec expecting to find “a land fit for heroes” and Sec finding only unemployment. However, they and with aust had learned many new skills, including how it w to drive these new-fangled motor lorries. The 1930’s saw the building of new roads all across Europe - big prestige projects such as Hitler’s Autobahns in Germany were there to be used but also to show off the “greatness” of the country and to be job creation projects. The Colchester By-pass (now the Avenue of Remembrance and Cowdry Avenue) was built by local unemployed men for just that reason. The Ministry of Transport had started by building sections of the A12 through the 20

Then the Second World War stopped all these projects, and with austerity throughout the 1950’s it was not until the beginning of the 1960’s that the By-pass was back on the table, on a plus different alignment than the pre-war design. It was built in concrete by Robert McGregor & Sons Construction in around 24 months, wing between autumn 1964 and the end of 1966, y the 1930’s, with the detail work around fencing and signage being completed at the time of the opening in March 1967. The proposed opening date had been “late 1966”.

Parent/Carer Review: “I’ve been taking my son to the Thursday morning baby gym class since he was 7 months old. It’s been amazing to watch his skills develop and his confidence grow. At 11 months old he is now walking and climbing. I have no doubt that attending Iceni Gymnastics Club has played a significant role in helping him to develop those skills. He gets so excited as soon as we walk in and really enjoys the interaction with other children.” Contact: Annette on 07773 891 563 Unit 1B, Moss Road, Stanway, Colchester CO3 0LE

Parent/Carer Review: “Vanessa has this amazing ability to captivate her classes from start to finish. The babies and toddlers are literally in awe of her and with good reason. She is fun, bright, friendly and they adore her. It is definitely the highlight of our week. Using a range of sensory activities, stories and lots and lots of singing our little one has developed a passion for music and the classes are definitely helping to develop her language skills.” Contact: Vanessa on 07504456593
