Porphyria’s Lover Peter Fribbins The title comes from the Robert Browning poem of the same name (1836). For me, this is a remarkable poem, full of passion, vivid imagery and imbued with touches of madness and distortion (here literally in the form of the disease porphyria) which seems typical of much Romantic art. I have often in my mind paired the aesthetics of different poets and composers, and whenever I think of Robert Browning, I always think of Robert Schumann. There seem to be a number of parallels, not merely their chronology, but also their expressive worlds. A delicate, almost seductive madness and a slightly twisted reality seem so much a part of Schumann’s aesthetic and of this poem. Thus, this piece forms my musical response to the Browning through a kind of Schumannesque filter. I have attempted in some way to capture the delicacy of Schumann, his elegiac side, the passion, and also that sense of early Romantic tender warmth (that on occasions can seem almost smothering and suffocating). The gentle madness takes the form of dissonant clusters, which return in different forms throughout the work (I was thinking in particular of the strange dissonances in ‘Einen Blumen’ from the piano peces Waldscenen , Op.82). Also there is a recurring Brahms-like melodic idea (marked ‘teneramente’ in the score) which also returns in different Schumannesque guises, sometimes as a transparent shadow of before, sometimes darker and twisted, sometimes slower or quicker. There are three movements: the quick middle movement is followed by the last movement without a break. -

Gerard Hoffnung Gerard Hoffnung est un musicien et dessinateur allemand, né le 22 mars 1925 à Berlin et mort le 25 septembre 1959 à Londres. Tubiste de formation, il est surtout connu pour ses œuvres humoristiques et ses caricatures. Il y suit les cours de la Highgate School pendant que son père part s'occuper d'affaires bancaires en Palestine (cette séparation temporaire deviendra finalement définitive du fait de la Seconde Guerre mondiale). Non mobilisable en raison de ses origines germaniques, il est employé dans une laiterie avant de devenir professeur de dessin à la Stamford School en 1945. Il commence à publier des caricatures dans différents journaux et écrit des chroniques radiophoniques pour l'émission dominicale, One Minute Please. Il épouse en 1952 Annetta Bennett, qui veillera à la promotion de l'œuvre de son époux après sa mort prématurée. Hoffnung meurt en effet d'une hémorragie cérébrale en 1959 à 34 ans, après avoir occupé deux décennies à une quantité considérable d'activités comme - entre autres - celles de caricaturiste, tubiste, impresario, producteur de radio et conférencier, notamment pour les Oxford et Cambridge Union Societies. En tant que caricaturiste, il est l'auteur d'une série de recueils de dessins humoristiques se moquant gentiment des chefs d'orchestres et des instrumentistes. -

SUMMER 2019 EVENTS WELCOME It is my pleasure as Director of Music to introduce this Events Guide for my first Summer Term at Purcell. I always enjoy building any artistic programme, and I hope that there is something here for everyone. We very much look forward to seeing you at any of the concerts and masterclasses in the booklet, either at school or in one of our prestigious London venues, including the Southbank Centre and Wigmore Hall. In a particularly exciting new venture, we shall be live streaming a series of concerts online, bringing The Purcell School Recital Room to you; enabling you to attend virtually, from wherever you are in the world. One of the joys of this place is the enormous range of work that happens every week, even in a term heavy with public exams. You will find every department of the school represented here, contributing to a rich menu of jazz, classical, romantic and 20th Century repertoire, alongside work by some of our many student composers. Solo recitals appear side by side with chamber ensembles, orchestras, choirs and many jazz ensembles. You will also see that we draw not only on the talents of our exceptional students: we also showcase some of our alumni, teaching staff, and world-renowned guest artists. I am looking forward to working with Stephen Isserlis at the Deal Festival in what will be my first public performance here as a conductor. I am also excited about the visits of Cambridge Professor John Rink and LSO oboist Juliana Koch. New collaborations this term include the Hertfordshire Festival of Music, and we continue to welcome longstanding friends such as Guy Johnston and Remus Azoitei. -
