KNOTS A very short guide to knotting terminology used on these pages. This is not an exhaustive list of knotting terms; it just contains some of the more unfamiliar words that we have used. If you wish to research the subject further, any good book on knots should have a knotting glossary. • Knot. Strictly speaking, a knot is tied in the end of a line as a stopper, such as the Thumb knot or Figure of eight knot. • Stopper knots are used to stop the end of a rope fraying, or to stop it running through a small hole or constriction. • Bend. A bend is used to tie two ropes together, as in the Sheet bend. Technically, even the Reef knot is a bend. • Hitch. A hitch is used to tie a rope to a spar, ring or post, such as the Clove hitch. Hitches can also be used to tie one rope onto another rope, as in the Rolling hitch. • Running End - the end of the rope that is being used to tie the knot. • Standing End - the static end of the rope. • Splice – A splice is used to fasten two ends of a rope together when a knot would be impracticable, as, for instance, when the rope must pass through a pulley. • Bight can have two meanings: -- The main part of the rope from the running end to the standing end -- Where the rope is bent back to form a loop. • Jam - when the knot tightens under tension and you cannot get it undone! Blackwall Hitch This is a simple half hitch over a hook. -

BSA Troop 119 Knot Board The Use and Advantage or Disadvantage of each Knot Flemish Flake: A coil of rope or hose used when saving space on the deck of a boat. Line will twist when run out. Figure Eight Flake: A way to lay rope or hose that will not twist when run out. This flake uses more space on the deck of a boat. Bight and Turn: Basic components of all knots. Overhand: The simplest knot to tie. It is used to prevent the end of a rope from unraveling or as a simple stopper knot. It is susceptible to slipping when used as a stopper knot. Figure Eight: Used as a stopper knot to prevent a rope from running out of a retaining device. Not as susceptible to slipping as the Overhand Knot. Granny: A binding knot that should not be used. It is inferior to the Reef or Square Knot. Square: A binding knot used to join two ends of a single line around an object. Also used to join two lines of equal diameter together. Not secure as a bend. Spills (changes form) easily if a free end is pulled outward. Also known as the Reef Knot or Joining Knot by Boy Scouts. Thief’s: A binding knot that spills easily. Rumored to be used by sailors to tie a bag closed where it can later be checked for tampering. Crown: Used to start a Back Splice and some specialty knots such as an Acorn Basket. Back Splice: Used to prevent the end of a rope from unraveling and as a stopper knot. -

To form the Catshank, tie two Running Knots or simple Slip Knots a foot or more apan. Double the rope between them to form opposite bights as with the Sheepshank. Draw the bights through those opposite knots until the rope i:.: suitably :shortened (fig. 1). Then pull the knots tight by Ngging the main portions of the rope toward the ends. This final action gives an excellent Idea of the strength and resistance of the Catshank. fig. 2 70 The Dogshank With a rope where the ends are handy I this is a simple and effective TIE way of shortening it still more. You ... HERE begin with the customary opposite bights, taken in the center of the rope, like an elongated letter "5." Then simply tie one end to the bulge of the opposite hight, using a simple Overhand Knot (fig. 1). Tie the other end to its opposite bight in the same fashion. You can allow whatever length you want to the projecting ends, the actual shortening being done by the shank. REPEAT HERE fig. 1 Overhand Knot with Sheepshank This is the simplest and quickest of all rope shortenings, when using a rope with both ends available. Form a doubled bight in the center of the rope (in "S"~shape) and tie the triple strands in an ordinary Overhand Knot. -

Revised 1/22/2014 Dyneema®/ Spectra® Lifelines Properties and recommendations for its use By Evans Starzinger Dyneema® and Spectra® are different brand names for the same very strong fiber (chemically Ultra-High Molecular Weight Polyethylene - referred to below as HMPE). This fiber has very attractive properties: extremely strong (15 times stronger than steel fiber of the same weight) and low stretch for its weight, resistant to flex fatigue (Relative Flexlife: Dyneema® 100, Vectran 55, Aramid 8, stainless steel fiber 6), extreme chafe resistance (8 times lower dry abrasion and 40 times lower wet abrasion than all other conventional fibers) and quite UV resistant. It has been finding increasing usage aboard sailing vessels and has been recently approved as a lifeline material. However it does have some unique characteristics which require special techniques and care for optimal performance. What type/size of line to use The Offshore Special Regulations (ORSs) set minimum allowed diameters for HMPE lifelines. Double braid line, sleeves and covers are allowed, so long as the core is pure HMPE and the core alone meets the minimum diameter requirement. There has been some confusion among sailors and riggers concerning these minimum diameters with double braid line - about whether the whole line or just the core must meet these minimums. The regulation's intent, and correct interpretation, and way that inspectors will proceed, is that the core alone should meet the minimum. So, for instance, a 5mm double braid with a 4mm core would only meet the 4mm minimum (and not the 5mm). ISAF recently raised their minimums because of concerns about chafe. -

Remote members in- clude Andrew HALCROW in Hamnavoe, Shetland, Robert HARLAND of Pokfulam, Hong Kong, and J. H. MASON who is a bank manager in Borneo. The Guild must evolve to cope with this essentially scattered mem- bership. Perhaps national and regional representatives should be appoint- ed. Where solitary I.G.K.T. members are situated there may be no other way than to delegate to them powers to promote the Guild’s aims to suit local conditions. In some parts of the U.K. a scan of the membership list reveals small clusters of individuals forming. In these areas an ener- getic person with broad knotting interests could emerge as a local or- ganiser. What do you think should happen? Make your views known at April’s A.G.M. It is understood that many may never attend the meetings or outings, so this newsletter and other correspondence will be vital...and our greatest expense. The 5 subscription agreed at the inaugural meeting aboard ‘Discovery’ equipped the steering committee to do its work (“You can send a lot of letters for 5 a person,” someone said). True, but you cannot photocopy and distribute four issues of ‘Knotting Matters’ plus other correspondence during the year for that sum. The Guild needs to cover its costs and - presumably - to accumulate a small surplus.
