Thanks to our Member's dues, a substantial contribution from our most generous member and contributions from a couple of local patriotic organizations, we will end the year financially sound and feeling confident that we will be able to make any emergency repairs and continue to make improvements to the Museum. As reported in previous Scuttlebutts, most of our major projects have been completed. Our upgraded security system with motion activated cameras inside the Museum and outside the shed John Cecil should be completed this month. The construction of a concrete structure for the mid-1600s British Admiralty Cannon should be completed early next year. I hope everyone has a Merry Christmas and a New Year that is happy, healthy and prosperous. On this Christmas day let's all say a prayer for our troops that can't be home with families and loved ones. They are doing a great job of preventing the spread of terrorism and protecting our freedoms. Please say a prayer for their safe return home. The document is not a comprehensive timeline of every action, policy decision, or ship movement. What is provided is a glimpse into how the 20th century’s first global conflict influenced the Navy and its evolution throughout the conflict and the immediate aftermath. The source base is predominately composed of the published records of the Navy and the primary materials gathered under the supervision of Captain Dudley Knox in the Historical Section in the Office of Naval Records and Library. A thorough chronology remains to be written on the Navy’s actions in regard to World War I. The nationality of all vessels, unless otherwise listed, is the United States. A Very Short Guide to Knotting Terminology Used on These Pages
KNOTS A very short guide to knotting terminology used on these pages. This is not an exhaustive list of knotting terms; it just contains some of the more unfamiliar words that we have used. If you wish to research the subject further, any good book on knots should have a knotting glossary. • Knot. Strictly speaking, a knot is tied in the end of a line as a stopper, such as the Thumb knot or Figure of eight knot. • Stopper knots are used to stop the end of a rope fraying, or to stop it running through a small hole or constriction. • Bend. A bend is used to tie two ropes together, as in the Sheet bend. Technically, even the Reef knot is a bend. • Hitch. A hitch is used to tie a rope to a spar, ring or post, such as the Clove hitch. Hitches can also be used to tie one rope onto another rope, as in the Rolling hitch. • Running End - the end of the rope that is being used to tie the knot. • Standing End - the static end of the rope. • Splice – A splice is used to fasten two ends of a rope together when a knot would be impracticable, as, for instance, when the rope must pass through a pulley. • Bight can have two meanings: -- The main part of the rope from the running end to the standing end -- Where the rope is bent back to form a loop. • Jam - when the knot tightens under tension and you cannot get it undone! Blackwall Hitch This is a simple half hitch over a hook. -

Nearly 3,000 Patriots were taken prisoner, and valuable ammunition and supplies were lost to the Hessians. The prisoners faced a particularly grim fate: Many later died from deprivation and disease aboard British prison ships anchored in New York Harbor. Nov 16 1776 – American Revolution: The United Provinces (Low Countries) recognize the independence of the United States. Nov 16 1776 – American Revolution: The first salute of an American flag (Grand Union Flag) by a foreign power is rendered by the Dutch at St. Eustatius, West Indies in reply to a salute by the Continental ship Andrew Doria. Nov 16 1798 – The warship Baltimore is halted by the British off Havana, intending to impress Baltimore's crew who could not prove American citizenship. Another example of a mission ready ship because of a U.S. Navy Port Engineer USS Bainbridge Answers A Distress Call Story Number: NNS190613-19Release Date: 6/13/2019 8:53:00 PM By Mass Communication Specialist 3rd Class Jason Waite, USS Bainbridge (DDG 96) Public Affairs GULF OF OMAN (NNS) -- The Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS Bainbridge (DDG 96) responded to a distress call from the M/V Kokuka Courageous in the Gulf of Oman the morning of June 13. The Bainbridge received a call from the Kokuka Courageous crew advising that their ship was in distress approximately 30 nautical miles from Bainbridge’s location. All 21 crew members of the Kokuka Courageous had evacuated to a tug boat and were transferred to the Bainbridge. One of the Kokuka Courageous sailors suffered burns on his hands and was treated immediately by the Bainbridge medical team. Once safely aboard Bainbridge, the Kokuka Courageous crew received medical check-ups, showers and clean clothes along with food and any other attention they required. Bainbridge is underway as part of Abraham Lincoln Carrier Strike Group's (ABECSG) deployment in support of maritime security cooperation efforts in U.S. 5th, 6th and 7th Fleet areas of operations. CHAPTER IV THE ENEMY WITHIN THE GATES AT the census taken in 1911, the last before the outbreak of the war, there were within the Commonwealth 32,990 persons who were born in Germany, and 2,774 born in Austria- Hungary. These figures do not afford a clue to the total number of inhabitants of German origin, or who had ties of affinity connecting them with enemy countries, nor do the census statistics afford a dependable means of estimating the probable number of such persons. As will be explained in a later section of this chapter, there were in South Australia and Queensland, and to a lesser extent in Victoria and Tasmania, towns whose population consisted mainly of people of Australian birth, and whose forbears had for several generations been Australian, but who nevertheless were senti- nientally attached to Germany as the land of their family origin. Very many of these habitually spoke German, were Lutheran in religion, and piobably had never seriously thought of being placed in the predicament of having to discriminate between the allegiance which they owed to the, British Crown and nation by virtue of citizenship, and the feeling--which there had never been any need for them to suppress-of affection for the L'nterland of their ancestors, whence came to them their literature, language and religion. It was not uii- natural that some of the many thousands of German descent were prepared, from recklessness, or bravado, or quite honest patriotic motives, to help the German cause if they could, and their intimate knowledge of Australia and of Australian industry increased their power of injuring her cause. -

I want to add my congratulations to Drs. Kenneth Hagan and Dean Allard and Lt. Cdr. Thomas Cutler, who will be receiving our 2015 Commodore Dudley W. Knox Naval History Lifetime Achievement Award. I strongly urge you, if you are able, to attend the banquet and take part in this naval history celebration. It’s one of many initiatives that your foundation will use to promote our great naval history and heritage. Another initiative we discuss in this edition is our upcom- ing “Violent Skies: The Air War Over Vietnam” symposium to be held at National Defense University October 15–16. This two-day conference, which will be co-hosted by the five service historical foundations (Air Force Historical Foundation, Army Historical Founda- tion, Foundation for Coast Guard History, Marine Corps Heritage Foundation, and Naval Historical Foundation) will bring together some of the top scholars along with many sea- soned Vietnam War veterans to examine the conduct of the air campaign from multiple perspectives. -

The Museum had a good financial year in 2018. Our gross revenue was about $19,500 thanks to $ 7,500.00 in donations from one very generous Museum member and several generous donations from members, friends and visitors. The Museum had 1366 visitors in 2018, a record that exceeds by 553 the previous record set in 2017. It looks like 2019 could be another record year. As of the end of February, We had over 200 visitors, including group visits from Hardee Homes (40) and the Kaiser-Frazer-Willys Overland Car Club (45). John Cecil The damaged ceiling in our library mentioned in the December 2018 Scuttlebutt has been replaced with modern dry wall, textured, and painted. This turned out to be such an improvement to the appearance of the library that the Museum's Board of Directors decided to bite the bullet and have the leak stained WW II era ceiling in the front entrance (quarterdeck) replaced with the same material, texture and paint. Additionally, Fred Carino our Curator and Museum Member Steven Safford (talented electrician) are installing track lighting. The ceiling and lighting project will be completed early March. We believe that this will be a knock your socks off improvement to the appearance of the Museum. If you haven't been to the Museum in awhile, you need to stop in to appreciate these and many other recent improvements to the building and displays. -
