Ray Ying-Hoi Lai, Ph.D. Managing Engineer | Materials & Corrosion Engineering Building 12W Unit 802-3, 12 Science Park West Ave | Shatin, New Territories, Hong SAR, +852 5287 5092 tel | [email protected]

Professional Profile Dr. Lai works extensively on projects involving battery design, manufacturing, and failure analysis. In addition to performing root cause analyses of products involving battery failures across Asia, has conducted more than 50 on-site engineering audits of primary/ secondary battery cell and battery pack manufacturers for applications from wearables to electric vechicles (EVs). He assists clients by conducting technical audits on manufacturers of batteries and battery packs to evaluate the potential for safety issues and conducting investigations on field failures. Dr. Lai also helps many clients evaluate and choose vendors based on the specific quality and safety requirements, along with the unique usage scenarios of the clients.

In addition to battery related works, Dr. Lai conducts bespoke technical audits for processes such as consumer electronics assembly, medical device assembly, printed circuit board assembly (PCBA), raw material, displays, wireless devices and injection modling. The focus of such audits is to improve the quality, reliability, and safety of the products and minimize reject rates through a detailed evaluation of the equipment, processes, and quality control in the factory.

By training, Dr. Lai specializes in material characterization techniques including X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, Auger electron spectroscopy as well as physical vapor deposition processes for metal and semi-conductor thin films. He also has extensive experience in the design, modification, operation and maintenance of ultra-high vacuum (UHV) components.

Prior to joining Exponent, Dr. Lai was a research associate for the Department of Physics at the University of Science and Technology (HKUST) with a focus on semiconducting thin film and nanostructure fabrication using a II-VI MBE system optimized for high temperature material growth. His PhD thesis focused on magnesium sulfide thin films grown with molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) for solar- blind short-wavelength ultraviolet detection in flame sensing applications.

While working as a laboratory technician at HKUST, Dr. Lai assisted general physics demonstrations and provided a wide range of technical support to teaching faculty and students. He is also familiar with hands-on techniques such as prototype fabrication, computer aided design (CAD) and additive manufacturing.
