Mani Bhavan a simple old-style, two storied building on Laburnum Road, Mumbai. Whenever Gandhi was in Mumbai, between 1917 to 1934, he stayed at this home which is now converted into the museum and an adjacent research center. In 1955 Mani Bhavan was dedicat ed as a memorial to Gandhi and to the very important activities of great significance he initiated from that place. Mani Bhavan is

6

recognized as a Research Institute preparing students for Ph.D. degree in Gandhian Thought and Rural Development by Universi ty of Bombay.

Mumbai and its people played a very prominent part in India’s unique struggle for freedom. Gandhi was rightly proud of its patriotic and cosmopolitan citizens. Mani Bhavan is one of the few important places hallowed by Mahatma Gandhi's close association. Mani Bhavan is a modest two-story building in the comparatively quiet locality called Gamdevi. It served as Gandhi's Bombay head-quarters for about 17 long and eventful years. It belonged to Sri Revashankar Jagjeevan Jhaveri, who was Gandhi's friend and host during that period. It was from Mani Bhavan that Gandhi initiated Civil Disobedience through: Satyagraha (Gandhi’s non - violent resistance); Khilafat (the Muslim branch of resistance that would join with Gandhi); Swadeshi (awareness of viol ence and the boycott of abusive industries), and Khadi (self sustenance through homespun threads of wool, silk or cotton in lieu of manufactured garments).

Mani Bhavan has a story to tell as it housed Gandhi occasionally during the times when he grew in st ature and strength, from a queer type of an agitator to a world figure by successfully introducing satyagraha (individual as well as mass) as a new and effective weapon to fight all evil and injustice. It gives an idea of the dynamism of the great Mahatma even while he was shaping himself and the nation, along the uncharted path of non -violent resistance to foreign rule and to all evil.

See the room that Gandhi occupied in its original setting, its picture gallery, the library hall and the terrace where he was arrested on January 4, 1932. The Mani Bhavan library consists of around 50,000 books & periodicals in reference and lending sections. The room contains books on and by Gandhi, Gandhian thoughts, freedom movements and allied subjects. The library b oasts of many out of print books.

Arun and Tushar take you into a private auditorium on the first floor to watch a documentary film with Gandhi of his speeches and then enjoy a discussion among our group and more wonderful leelas from Arun and Tushar.

7

View “The Terrace” where a bronze plaque with an inscription now marks the place of the tent in which Gandhi was arrested in January, 1932. He used to sleep and hold his prayers on this terrace.

Manav Sadhana - In 1990, a team of young volunteers, inspired by Gandhian values, began gathering under the branches of a tree in the Gandhi Ashram every Saturday to play with street children. They provided the children with a nutritional meal and taught them about basic hygiene by cutting their nails and bathing them. This activity quickly came together into a full time endeavor working to brighten the future of underprivileged children.

Today, from a quiet corner in the Gandhi Ashram, Manav Sadhna serves more than 8000 children and women through more than 35 projects. We also indirectly touch the lives of many more ind ividuals through our healthcare and educational support projects. The projects are created based on the needs and participation of the community.

Sabarmati Ashram - True, indeed, that wherever Gandhi stopped has become a place of pilgrimage and wherever he roamed has become a sanctified place. The Sabarmati Ashram in Ahmedabad, so named after the holy river Sabarmati, situated on the river’s banks is such an example. This site no longer function s as a working ashram but as a museum and an institution whose aim is to preserve and propagate the legacy of the Mahatma.

Hundreds of visitors, both foreigners and locals, with curiosity and feelings of devotion arrive here and feel inspired and enliven ed. More than half a million visit here every year. The Sabarmati Ashram is a source of inspiration for the present generation, and will serve as such for the generations to come. Visit the Taj Mahal. With its incredible lacy white grandeur the Taj Mahal is perhaps the most perfect architectural monument in the world. To the poet Tagore it was a `tear on the face of eternity'. In memory of his wife the great Mughal emperor Shah Jehan constructed this most extravagant and incomparable monument built for love. Amazingly graceful from any angle, it is the close up detail, which is really astounding.

Agra Fort is situated on the banks of the Ri ver Yamuna, another monumental mission accomplished by the great Mughal visionary Emperor Akbar. His son Jehangir and grandson Shah Jehan added to this imposing structure during their rule. The palaces, mosques and audience halls contained within its massi ve wall of red sandstone are perfect examples of blending Islamic and Hindu traditions.

Agra, the city known for the famous monument of love - the Taj Mahal. The Mughal Emperor, Shah Jehan, constructed Taj Mahal. It is said he built this monument in the me mory of his beloved wife Mumtaj Mahal. The Taj Mahal is ethereal at any part of the day - blushing in the rosy glow of dawn or sunset, appearing like a pearly mirage in the moonlight or reflected in the

21

pools of the garden. Perhaps the most moving view of the Taj is from an octagonal tower in the Agra Fort further along the river Yamuna.

There are very few cities in the world that can match the history and heritage of Agra. Located at a distance of 204 km south of Delhi, Agra is the single most famous tourist destination of India. Situated on the west bank of River Yamuna, Agra is a part o f the great Norther Indian plains. The architectural splendor of the city is reflected in the glorious monuments of medieval India built by great Mughals who ruled India for more than 300 years.

In the mid 16th century and earlier 17th century Agra witnes sed a frenzied building activity and it was during this time when the symbol of love Taj Mahal was built. The buildings made during this era were purely in the contemporary Mughal style and of very high quality, which is still reflected in whatever monumen ts remain in Agra.
