Swartz The Hugo Awards originally were called the Science Fiction Achievement Awards and first were given out at Philcon II, the World Science Fiction Con- vention of 1953, held in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The second oldest--and most prestigious--awards in the field, they quickly were nicknamed the Hugos (officially since 1958), in honor of Hugo Gernsback (1884 -1967), founder of Amazing Stories, the first professional magazine devoted entirely to science fiction. No awards were given in 1954 at the World Science Fiction Con in San Francisco, but they were restored in 1955 at the Clevention (in Cleveland) and included six categories: novel, novelette, short story, magazine, artist, and fan magazine. -
China Mieville's Perdido Street Station
Unnatural London: The Metaphor and The Marvelous in China Mieville’s Perdido Street Station Alexandre Veloso de Abreu* Abstract This paper explores allegorical and unnatural elements in China Miéville’s novel Perdido Street Station, starting with a parallel between the fictional city New Crobuzon and London. Fantasy literature examines human nature by means of myth and archetype and science fiction exploits the same aspects, although emphasizing technological possibilities. Horror is said to explore human nature plunging into our deepest fears. We encounter the three elements profusely in the narrative, making it a dense fictional exercise. In postclassical narratology, unnatural narratives are understood as mimetical exercises questioning verisimilitude in the level of the story and of discourse. When considered unnatural, narratives have a broader scope, sometimes even transcending this mimetical limitation. Fantastical and marvelous elements generally strike us as bizarre and question the standards that govern the real world around us. Although Fantasy worlds do also mirror the world we live in, they allow us the opportunity to confront the model when physically or logically impossible characters or scenes enhance the reader’s imagination. Elements of the fantastic and the marvelous relate to metaphor as a figure of speech and can help us explore characters’ archetypical functions, relating these allegorical symbols to the polis. In Miéville’s narrative, such characters will be paralleled to inhabitants of London in different temporal and spatial contexts, enhancing how the novel metaphorically represents the city as an elaborate narrative strategy. Reproduce, Reuse, Recycle: The End of the Future, Salvage, and China Miéville’s Railsea Zak Bronson University of Western Ontario Abstract Set in a post-apocalyptic land devoid of life and littered with refuse, China Miéville’s Railsea (2012) provides a dystopian image of late capitalism’s eradication of the future. By portraying a world at the tail end of economic disaster in which a resuscitated economy leads to catastrophe, it provides a critique of late capitalism’s dependence upon continual accumulation. However, rather than simply envisioning this disaster, Miéville’s novel simultaneously explores the possibilities of thinking outside of constant growth. Drawing upon Evan Calder Williams’s recent discussion of salvagepunk, this article explores Railsea as a salvage of the past that picks through the garbage, hoping to find something useful within. Rather than using leftover waste to regenerate the social order before the apocalypse, Miéville’s novel taps into the utopian possibilities of repurposing and recreating the world anew out of the wreckage that remains. What are we waiting for when we no longer need to wait in order to arrive? We are waiting for the arrival of what remains. -

Ekman: Map and Text 66 Map and Text: World-Architecture and the Case of Miéville’s Perdido Street Station Stefan Ekman University of Gothenburg _____________________________________ Abstract: In this essay, the author argues that analysing a fantasy novel that comes with a map without taking into account the dynamic between map and text would be to omit a vital part of the fictional world. By drawing on the Vitruvian triad of architectural theory, the construction of the world in China Miéville’s Perdido Street Station (2001) is analysed through some building-blocks of that world that emerge prominently on the novel’s map. After a brief discussion of world-building and fantasy maps, the map is taken as a starting point in order to demonstrate how the transport network in general and railways and skyrail in particular are given distinctive form. One function that these building-blocks have in the novel is to provide locations which the reader can use to link dynamically between text and map, thus relating locations to each other spatially and adding layers of meaning to them, turning them from spaces into places. Passages in the text are used to show how it is possible to move between map and text, and how such movement not only augments the spatiality of the world but that it also provides a way to discuss the city’s social and economic issues by juxtaposing different characters’ perspectives. Categorizations of fantasy have tended to avoid discussions of race, in part because it is an uncomfortable gray area since fantasy literature does not yet have a clear taxonomy. Nevertheless, race is often an unavoidable component of fantasy literature. This thesis considers J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings as a taproot text for fantasy literature before moving on to Neil Gaiman’s American Gods and China Miéville’s Perdido Street Station , both newer fantasy novels which include interesting constructions of race and raise issues of miscegenation and hybridity. -

Who does it? What is it? Is it even anything? Is it even New? M. John Harrison, från diskussionen om New Weird på TTA:s nätforum1 Den 29 april 2003 startade den brittiske författaren M. John Harrison, upphovsmannen till de inflytelserika Viriconium-böckerna, en diskussionstråd på det brittiska fantastik- magasinet The Third Alternatives nätforum. Tråden, som inleddes med ovanstående funderingar, fick en enorm respons. Kritiker, recensenter och flera av den omtvistade genrens mest kända namn kastade sig in i diskussionen för att bena ut vad New Weird egentligen var – om något alls. Tre år tidigare hade China Miévilles Perdido Street Station2 kommit ut i Storbritannien. Romanen, som utspelar sig i den skitiga kosmopolitiska jättestaden New Crobuzon, blev en stor succé. Den var inte det första exemplet på det som skulle komma att kallas New Weird, men det var det första verket som blev en kommersiell framgång. Boken fick ett varmt mottagande bland läsare och kritiker, översattes till dussintalet språk och bidrog till att göra den tidigare tämligen obskyra genren bekant för en något större allmänhet. 1 M.
