Categorizations of fantasy have tended to avoid discussions of race, in part because it is an uncomfortable gray area since fantasy literature does not yet have a clear taxonomy. Nevertheless, race is often an unavoidable component of fantasy literature. This thesis considers J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings as a taproot text for fantasy literature before moving on to Neil Gaiman’s American Gods and China Miéville’s Perdido Street Station , both newer fantasy novels which include interesting constructions of race and raise issues of miscegenation and hybridity. This thesis moves towards an understanding of what purpose creating and utilizing races serves, and how fantasy literature allows for the identification and potential resolution of a number of human anxieties regarding race. represented in the fantastic provide a measure of the concern the culture has for matters relating to race. If a horror film is racist, whether consciously or unconsciously, leaving such racism unexamined allows for the perpetuation of it, both by the mass media and by the ordinary moviegoer. Similarly, a movie or novel that works actively to expose and indict racism can influence many people. Examining the systems of racial meaning and stereotypes within a work (or, in this case, within a genre) provides a better understanding of the culture, cultural production, and racial ideology. It is a political act, as Le Guin said of fiction; criticism, and particularly criticism of the popular, must also choose between collusion and subversion. The second, and related, reason for the study of race in the fantastic has to do with the fantastic’s lack of realism; it can serve as a literature of possibility…By presenting alternatives, the fantastic throws into relief ‘the real.’ Because works of the fantastic are simultaneously situated both within the writer’s realm (and thus subject to the codes and conventions of the time in which they are written), and within the realm of the imaginary worlds constructed, they can both reenact and alter racial codes and representations…The imagined has real effects. (Leonard 4) 1.1 Introduction This thesis addresses race in works of fantasy literature, focusing on racial representation, as well as issues of miscegenation and hybridity. Accordingly, J.R.R. Drawing on a cognitive model, which provides certain parameters and expectations for the representations of the gods, in particular, for the physical representations their bodies, I examine the anthropomorphic representation of the gods. I show how the narratives of the Homeric Hymns represent communication as based upon false assumptions between the mortals and immortals about the body. I argue that two methods are used to create and maintain the commonality between mortal bodies and immortal bodies; the allocation of skills among many gods and the transference of displays of power to tools used by the gods. However, despite these techniques, the texts represent communication based upon assumptions about the body as unsuccessful. Next, I analyze the instances in which the assumed body of the god is recognized by mortals, within a narrative. This recognition is not based upon physical attributes, but upon the spoken self identification by the god. Finally, I demonstrate how successful communication occurs, within the text, after the god has been recognized. Successful communication is represented as occurring in the presence of ritual references.

In the summer of 1895 I noticed a peculiar variation in the leaves of a watermelon vine, growing in a patch in Clay county, Kansas. The plants were of the variety known as the " Georgia Rattlesnake," and, excepting the single plant mentioned, were of the usual type. nThe leaves of the watermelon seem to be quite constant in form. They are usually described as palmately five-lobed, the lobes being mostly sinuate-pinnatifid, with all the segments obtuse (Fig. ib). But in this plant the lobed condition of all the leaves was almost entirely absent, the border being only moderately undulate (Fig. ic). Some of the seed from this individual were planted in 1896, and the same leaf pe- culiarity was report- ed. The form has been successfully cul- t i v a t e d every year since that time, al- though it was usually planted in patches with the ordinary kind and much cross- pollination must have resulted.
