"The Office: An American Workplace" by Greg Daniels Adapted from the original script by Stephen Merchant and Ricky Gervais FADE IN: SCENE 1 - INT. MICHAEL SCOTT'S OFFICE - DAY Michael Scott is sitting behind his desk addressing a job seeker. SCOTT I'm a busy man. When I give jobs, I don't have time for a lotta B.S. If a guy comes to me and says, "Michael, this job has been my dream since I was a little kid. My whole life has been leading up to this job," ... That, I respond to. Nothing is more important than enthusiasm, from the Greek word meaning ... 'enthusiastic.' Huh? He looks to the job seeker, who says nothing. SCOTT Only problem'is, you talk the talk, but you don't walk the walk. Okay, that was global, I'll make it local: you didn't pass your fork-lift driver's test. But ... the foreman at the warehouse is a personal friend, okay? So don't sweat it, you're in. He picks up the receiver and dials. SCOTT {into phone, showing off) Deon ... You dog ... Playa! He winks at the job seeker. SCOTT It's "the boss," and when I mean Springsteen, I'll just say "God" ... Have you put out an ad for the fork-lift driver's job? Scott crosses his fingers and bites his lip. SCOTT Good, don't, I've got the guy here, he's ''the man" ... Has he passed his fork-lift driver's test? Playa, he gives the tests ... Scott rolls his eyes. -

What‘s so funny? Using a multidisciplinary approach to understand sitcom success Jennifer Juckel Supervised by: Professor Duane Varan Dr. Jennifer Robinson Associate Professor Steven Bellman This thesis is presented for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Communication Studies Murdoch University 2014 DECLARATION I declare that this thesis is my own account of my research and contains as its main content work that has not been previously submitted for a degree at any tertiary education institution. JENNIFER JUCKEL 28 January 2014 Abstract The sitcom genre is one of the most enduringly popular, yet we still know surprising little about which of the specific elements of sitcoms keep viewers tuning in. In fact, audiences themselves are not sure why they embrace a particular program, with research indicating behaviour often contradicts intention. Numerous studies have highlighted the problematically intertwined relationships between the physiological, cognitive and affective processing systems that contribute to research shortcomings. Furthermore, sitcom research lacks empirical audience response data. However, we can look to research to identify reliable components using measures from a variety of disciplines to offer insight into complementary audience responses. This study aimed to gather and reduce this information to a combination of key measures that best describe, and potentially predict, the components comprising successful sitcoms. Audience response data was collected using the current top sitcoms across the four main US networks –Modern Family (ABC), The Office (NBC), Family Guy (FOX), and Big Bang Theory (CBS). Relatability of plots and characters were assessed with a post-exposure survey, while a typology of humour techniques provided a timeline of humour events for each program, with which data were correlated. -

BAD FOODIE: CHAPTER TWO The Animated Rise of Guidry Cloche Written by Timothy Shireman EXT. - ALLEY BEHIND THE CROW FLIES CAFÉ - AFTERNOON Music: 'Charly' by The Prodigy During a break between filming segments of AMERICA'S CULTURAL CUISINE, two young filmmakers pick daisies from the cracks of the alley sidewalk. The Asian man yelps in goofy surprise when he spies a common toad. He unsuccessfully tries to capture it as it hops away into the tall grass. His gangly companion twirls and flits like a ballerina, curly hair decorated like a May Queen with dandelions, daisies, and crabgrass woven into a bio-degradable headpiece. Brushing open the screen door, producer F.J. LEWIS exits the rear of the old building and turns to his camera crew, who are loitering yards away. F.J. LEWIS Alright fellas, last segment. Then we can knock out the closing monologue. The pair look dazed and strangely aloof. F.J. LEWIS Where's Guidry? RODNEY (hands waving in the air) I dunno, man. MICHAEL (giggles) It wasn't my turn to babysit him. F.J. LEWIS Yes it was! I literally told you ten minutes ago to not let him out of your sight. You had one job! (to Rodney) Where did you see him last, Neumann? RODNEY We smoked some toad venom with him about five minutes ago and he said he was gonna go watch Goodfellas. (MORE) Written with Arc Studio: www.arcstudiopro.com 2. RODNEY (CONT'D) Then the sun came down and picked him up, and he got into this badass Camaro Z28 and him and Jerry Garcia and the sun went to go kick the Moon's ass, which is weird. -
