CLUB PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

We did it again. The Turnbull/ Richardson cup remained at Epping for another year. Only the 2nd time in its history after we beat Burwood Briars for club championship points in the final round of the season but that wasn’t the only success the group of Bulls members would experience this season.

Not only did I once again stand before you all and accept the Turnbull/ Richardson Cup the special rendition of the club song was moment on our club history that was very special and a memory that cannot be taken away from all the members and particularly the 40 odd players crammed into the Epping sheds. I’m sure that vision is lurking on you-tube somewhere and is well worth reliving from time to time.

Apart from that milestone, 5 teams made the finals which were a first for this club in about 28 odd years. Over the years we had 2 or three teams make finals but to have all 5 make the finals was a feat we haven’t seen in recent memory. It sent the likes of Rowdy and Sedge, club stalwarts and Life Members, scrambling the memory banks as to the last known time we achieved that. Our 1st grade finished 6th, 2nd grade 4th, 3rd grade 5th and 4th grade 2nd, Under 24’s 3rd. As a selection group this caused unprecedented angst and many sprinted conversations were had as to who could play where and management of players to qualify for finals. But what a position to be in with all 5 teams playing finals cricket. This club had come a long way and it was on the back of a very youthful group of Bulls members. Apart from 5 teams in the finals the opportunity to have two teams in the grand final was a real bonus. Although we were not able to bring a piece of silverware back to the club this season, every player that contributed to the finals did so with much purpose and distinction and we were rewarded with the Spirit of Cricket Award from the Association. Ok, not a premiership and you would hand it back for one but none the less a great achievement and it shows that the good hard/fair cricket can be played and you don’t need to sledge or carry on to win games. Look at the teams at the bottom of the spirit of cricket and they all have one thing in common. They don’t play finals cricket. In my eyes this capped off a great season and I was once again proud to stand before the other clubs and receive the award.

Our 5th grade did it tough again this season and the decision to not play Tim Creer Cup in hindsight was probably the wrong decision. Our focus next season is to re- enter the Tim Creer Cup and play back on turf as well as trying to enter a team in the local HK&HDCA competition

A winning culture has been developing for the past few seasons and this season saw competition for places heat up and players were rewarded for the achievements. The highest honour Cricket of the Year went to Cameron Court who I had the pleasure of watching him score after century and at 15, he has a very bright future. Cameron scored 3 centuries, highest score of 196; back to back tons and Cameron massed 801 season runs at an average 53.4. A sensational season, we might only see Cameron for another season before Grade cricket calls him. Well done Cameron

The Phil Dunnicliff award went to Matt Wilkins. The Dunnicliff award is the best under 24’s player in the club. Matt had a great season and established himself as a regular member of the 1st grade team. Matt scored 735 runs at an average of 31.96 and 32 @18.3. Well done Matt

The individual grade winners were once again deserved winners. 3, 2, 1 vote awarded by the Captains after each games saw the following players take out the awards

Dave Gilbert Medal 1st grade - Matt Wilkins Gavin Robertson Medal 2nd Grade – Brad Morgan Ron Payne Medal 3rd Grade – Dylan Munro Tim Creer Medal 4th Grade- Andrew Nicoletti Graeme Baird Medal 5th Grade – Hayden Doria Ian Wheatley Medal under 24’s – Blake Wassell Gary Bensley Medal All grades – Matt Wilkins

Congratulation to all the above medal Winners on a great consistent season well deserved.

This season’s Graeme Kightley Clubman of the year was awarded to Brendan Sedgers. As his old man has done before him, Brendan was a deserved recipient. In selecting the Clubman of the Year, you look for someone that has contributed to the club both on and off the field. Brendan was that typical Bulls member that would go above and beyond for this club. He played 3rd, 4th and 5th grade and throughout the season the under 24;s team

Annual Report Season 2013-14 3 needed a 12th man and Brendan was that player that was always available despite not being selected to play. During the finals campaign Brendan once again was available for 12th man duties right through to the Grand Final. A true clubman proving that the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. Well-deserved Brendan.

Once again a big thank you must go out to the captains. 1st grade Ian Wheatley, 2nd Grade – Brad Morgan, 3rd Grade – Matt Boorer, 4th Grade – Mike Wirth/Andrew Nicoletti, 5th Grade – Naji Haider and Under 24’s Mick McKeough. Each of you led your teams on and off the field with distinctive Bulls pride. Wheats came 2nd in the Association’s Captain of the Year Award, Morgs 3rd and Coat 1st. Great effort from all captains. This season was hard and added an extra layer of complexity which was a nice layer to have, with plenty of players wanting to play and as I mentioned earlier, competition for spots was hot and players earn their spots in the teams. It’s never easy captaining a team and it takes a lot of off field work to make sure your team is ready to go as well as the on-field operations. It was a baptism of fire for me this year with third grade but I enjoyed it immensely and it was made enjoyable working with such a great team of captains. Thank you.

There is another person who has to oversee the spirited debates and different points of view and Tim Creer once again was stoic in his duties as Chairman of Selectors. Thanks again Tim for your effort this season, it was probably a much easier season to oversee given our success.

The success of the Bull’s season 2013/14 has just not happened overnight if you have been following the Bulls through past reports or from afar you would be aware the club has been building and it is no great surprise the club is gaining the successes it deserves. It is though the result of plenty of dedicated hard work both on and off the field. On the field and particularly the training paddock, David Hossack has coached the club again this season and as we have done in previous season, our goals were set high and we achieved them. Each year we strived for higher results and under Hoss’ guidance the bulls were able to get 5 sides in the finals. A direct result of the team’s success was for the Bulls to go from 6th in the club championship to 3rd. A great result and one that can be directly attributed to Hossy’s efforts as club coach. Thank you Hoss to both you and your family for the dedicated effort you have given the Bulls this season and past seasons. Well done and you leave our club in a very strong position.

Kenny Wilcox once again headed up the practice sessions making Hoss’ job a lot easier and it wasn’t until Kenny had other commitments did we really see how effective his practice organisation was. Thanks Kenny.

I take this section of the report each year and often just cut & past it. I do because what else can you say about the management team that are bestowed with the honour of running this great club.

Vice President- Ian Fowler Secretary- Graeme Baird Treasurer- Mick Sedgers Committee members – Anthony Boorer, Mark Bruce, Mick McKeough and Nick Cox

No truer word can be spoken that without a strong group of people involved in running the club then a club will cease to exist. We are blessed to have such a strong group individuals involved in running this great club. This year success is greatly attributed to the committee and each and every month both off season and during the season we do what we do to make sure our club is strong both on and off the field. Thanks guys for your time and effort each and every week our success is greatly due to your leadership. Thanks AB for hosting us each and every month and also for your efforts around the club this year especially at the Shires subcommittee level. It is great to have a voice at the level.

The future of our club starts at a grass roots level and our Have A Go program for kids under 10 has been developing and growing well. The efforts from the Bulls in running the Friday night sessions are greatly appreciated. Gerard Meares has once again led the program and his efforts are greatly appreciated. The more kids we have playing cricket in the area means a stronger junior club transferring onto the Bulls in years to come. The Epping juniors have taken on the brand of the Bulls and are now known as the Epping District Junior Bulls. This is a positive move by the Juniors to create a stronger connection with the senior arm. The relationship is growing and from the grass roots right through to Masters Cricket, the Epping brand is growing and succeeding. Thanks To Mark Henning, President of the Juniors, and his committee for fostering that relationship.

This year saw our relationship with Bendigo Bank continue. The financial support of the bank towards a local sporting organisation is very strong and with the plans of expanding our training facilities the bank,s support is crucial in funding the works. Big thanks to the Bendigo Bank and Sharyn Hubert for their continued support. Another partner joined the bulls for the first time this season. The Ranch Hotel at North Ryde was our home this season and special arrangement saw the club benefit financially from our patronage. We held the dinner there this

4 Epping District Cricket Club Inc. www.eppingbulls.com.au year as well as a trivia night which was a great success. I look forward to building on these relationships next season.

Our club is going through great transitional period where success is being forwarded our way. My mantra is that success breed success and every year I state that and each year it proves correct. The success of Epping not only this year but for past few seasons is attributed to all the people in and around the club. Each and every person contributes in their on way, some more than others. That special spirit grows each year and we become a closer group and enjoy the individual successes as well as the team successes. As new people join our group they become part of the core that is the Bulls spirit. The Bulls are rising and the likes of Burwood, although always strong, are finding there is an old club coming through looking to be dominant force in Shires once again. We can’t simply rest with what we have achieved to date. Just a like a business you need to keep developing and looking for new ways to make it better and expand your brand. We are doing just that and with two GF appearances this year, one season soon, a premiership cup is lurking in the shallow depths. I look forward to the following season and seeing what is seemingly the Bulls Juggernaut rolling through shires.

I want to thank all the players and the committee for their support of me as President. The one thing I have become accustom to in this club is the support and unwavering mateship that exists. This is a great club and I am proud to lead The Epping Bulls Cricket Club into a strong and successful future.

Annual Report Season 2013-14 11

1ST GRADE TEAM REPORT

To borrow from the AFL vernacular this was a season expected to be a ‘rebuild’ as we began the campaign sans six of team that played in the 2012/13 grand final loss. A season of transition, and perhaps some short- term pain as new players were blooded and a respectable mid table finish was on the agenda. If indeed it was a season to ‘rebuild’ then it is fair to say that we did so in style, with another finals appearance (six in the last seven seasons), and a host of excellent team and individual performances that leave us well positioned to challenge for the premiership in 2014/15. All this was achieved despite not once fielding the same team in consecutive matches!

The most pleasing aspect of the season as far I was concerned, was the impact that a number of players new to First Grade made. Matt Wilkins, Nick Scollay, James Papworth, Chris Steffan and Blake Wassell all contributed match influencing performances despite their inexperience at this level. As the season went on a feature of our team was the tenacity we played with, never better exhibited than when defending small totals against Lane Cove, Southern Districts and Burwood. We played for each other and enjoyed each other’s company, important ingredients in any successful team.

It is probably a good indication of the progress we made during the season that we were not satisfied by bowing out at the quarter final stage, mainly on the back of an hour of madness with the bat. This final position was bordering on the unimaginable when were languishing at 1 win and 3 losses after 4 rounds. We were nigh impossible to beat in one day matches losing just one all year and dominant when on the road. So it would seem that a couple more home wins and some improvement in our two- day cricket should see us push harder for top spot.

I’d like to thank the committee for their support and giving me the opportunity to captain the Bulls, it really is an honour to lead our club. Thanks Hoss for your efforts with the club coaching over the past three seasons and a special shout out to Rowd who is always on hand to advise and assist with the behind the scenes logistics that go into our cricket. To our band of hardcore supporters Mr and Mrs Steffan, Mr de l’Epine, Kenny, Howard, Mr Hoss (late season return), Dad and of course Fez all the boys appreciated your presence during the season.

The Players

Matt Wilkins Wilko is a very talented young guy who can make looking extremely easy while playing every shot in the book. Matt scored a great ton against Penno and looked a class above at various times during the season. Occasionally began his innings like he was already 100* and this led to a few loose dismissals but this is something that will improve with experience, and I feel Wilko can develop into one of the competition’s elite batsman. Wilko bowls hard spun, well flighted offies and took numerous crucial wickets, proving he can play as the number one spinner if required. Wilko was a deserved winner of both the Gary Bensley and Dave Gilbert Medals. Also displayed an impressive taste in music, maybe dressing room DJ next season Wilko?

Nick Scollay 2013/14 was a breakthrough season for the enigma known as Scoll. He came into the side batting at 8 and finished the season as one half of an established opening combination. Scoll played a number of good innings during the season and I know he was frustrated at not cashing in further with a couple of really big scores. It was great to Scoll find his niche and start to believe he belongs at this level. His stroke play in our 13 over 10 wicket win against Strathfield was electrifying, and similar to Wilko there are a lot of runs on offer next season. Was involved in the most bizarre ‘own run out’ I’ve seen against Auburn and was nearly hit on the head while sitting under a skied ball at deep wicket.

Pascal de l’Epine Paz had an excellent season and was Mr Reliable in our middle order. Stroked a lovely century against Penno, an innings full of trademark off side punches, cuts and hard running. He consistently was the glue holding our innings together and always provided a sense of clam when at the crease. Paz is a good thinker about the game and often has interesting tactical insights and suggestions. He has a good presence in the field and his leggies are another useful weapon to have up our sleeve. Has a strong sense of justice and his jousts with AB post game were always entertaining.

Michael McKeough Macca is a great team man, who puts his all into the Bulls. He started the season as an opening bat who bowled a few overs and by the time he jetted off for his off season training camp in Cancun was a middle order bat and front line bowler. This role as a genuine all rounder is one that I now believe is best for Macca both personally and for the team. Macca’s expanding repertoire of shots and proactive running gave us middle order impetus when he switched places in the and the increased overs from him were valuable. I look forward to Macca continuing to develop his leadership and becoming a strike bowler next season.

Chris Steffan Steff was another of the newcomers to First Grade and found himself thrust into the role as new ball bowler from his debut. Chris quickly showed he could match at this level and got better and better as the season went on. Steff has all the attributes to be a strike bowler in the top grade and hopefully he has learnt from his exposure to the top batters and bowlers in the competition. Increased consistency of line and bowling his short ball at the throat rather than the sternum will help give Steff the chance to take many more wickets. Showed impressive application and technique with the bat to make many invaluable late runs. When we could understand him Steff provided some comedic verbals, and was an outstandingly committed scorer throughout the season.

Anthony Boorer AB is just Mr Epping Bulls. Whether it’s putting down the covers, collecting cricket balls, super sopping, mixing drinks, or ruthlessly extracting fines money he does it all without half measures. A true team and club -man AB continues to bowl lion hearted spells and pick up valuable wickets. He produced a vintage display against Lane Cove to take 7fa and bowl us to a famous win. AB often scored crucial later order runs and managed the feat of using three different bats in an innings of 14 against Souths. I’m sure AB will be enjoying the off-season as much for fact that he doesn’t have the skipper on the phone multiple times each week!

James Papworth Pappy debuted in round 4 and immediately looked at home both behind the stumps and with the bat. James has an excellent temperament and reads the game well. He played numerous good innings with the bat and was often involved in an important partnership. James and was very reliable behind the stumps both when keeping up and back, effecting a number of crucial dismissals.

Blake Wassell Blake was another newcomer to the top grade after a meteoric rise from thirds and from his first match made an impact taking catches and crucial wickets. Blake is one of those bowlers who has the knack of producing wicket taking balls even when nothing appears to be happening. A ball magnet in field he took many catches, though fell prey to ‘Scollay Sun’ at deep mid wicket on one occasion.

Steve Commons Availability issues afflicted Commo’s season, which was a shame, as he was key member of the team. His swashbuckling batting was big factor in our first win of the season and his accurate offies were always reliable and restricted the opposition. Commo’s catching was as good as ever though his extraordinary missed run out in the last round is the piece of fielding that will linger longest in everyone’s minds who saw it. The Macca’s cookies were arvo tea were also a highlight!

To all the players who were part of First Grade during the season thank you for your efforts and contributions to the team’s success during the season. I appreciate the support you all gave me, and your willingness to play for the team. Let’s come back next season and give this comp a real shake!

Having been a long -term player for this club and seen the inevitable ebbs and flows that occur over an extended period of time I want to take the time to praise our president Matt Boorer. Yes he is a good mate of mine, but his drive and passion for the club aided by the tremendously committed committee have ensured that we all now play for one of the premier clubs in the competition. This is something we must take not for granted or get complacent about, so let’s revel in the success we are having and do everything we can to make it continue. And, if you get the chance at pre-season or before let Matt know how good it is to play for the Bulls.

Annual Report Season 2013-14 15

2ND GRADE TEAM REPORT

Considering losing some boys from last season – either to promotion, to first grade or just not playing this season – and with some of the boys playing their first full season in second grade, to make the top four and the semifinals again was a great effort.

With no wins from the first two games, it wasn’t an ideal start; but then to win seven in a row was a great effort. We lost a tight one against Auburn then won another three on the trot, so it was looking good going into the finals. But as history shows, after a draw against Auburn in the qualifying final, Burwood once again beat us in the semi and went on to win yet another flag. We bowled and fielded really well in the semi, but we just couldn’t quite do it with the bat, with a very disciplined bowling display by Burwood on day two.

Mitchell Healey – Heals had a very consistent year with the bat in second grade and was very unlucky not to have a hundred against Souths, getting given out on 98. Heals is one of these guys who should really be looking to cement a spot in 1’s next year, having plenty of talent.

Dinith Amarasinghe – After playing the first couple of rounds in 1’s, Diners found himself in 2’s and had a fairly solid year with the ball; with 32 wickets in 2’s and cracking 50 for the club. Diners is also one of the best fielders in the club, but I’m sure he would’ve liked more runs having some strong starts.

Justin Bradley – JB was one of these guys having his first full year in 2’s. After starting in 4’s and having a solid start to the year, JB found himself in 2’s in round six and didn’t look back. With very disciplined and smart bowling, JB managed to take 20 wickets for the season, including a match-winning 7-37 against Warringah – was a great effort. He had a very impressive display and hopefully can lead a second grade attack to a premiership next season.

Josh Kew – Josh is a new player to the club with his first game in fifth grade scoring 169 N.O. He joined second grade in round five, having immediate impact by being a part of a match-winning partnership with Brucey, and a 71 against Penno. A great effort against Warringah, with Josh carrying his bat for 95, he showed how disciplined he could be. Josh also produced some very handy spells with ball in hand.

Nic Wilson – Wilso had a consistent season with the bat without making a big score. He scored a lot of 20’s and 30’s, and has a lot of talent and potential and should be pushing first grade next season. He also has very good hands in the slips.

Tim Hood – Timmy had a frustrating season to his standards, getting a few starts and looking in full control. When he gets past that nervous early stage he is awesome to watch, as we saw against Souths with an aggressive 124. This was Timmy’s last season with the Bulls due to getting married and all that stuff. Timmy will be sorely missed by everyone and we wish him all the best.

Sam Brewer – Sam was another playing the first full year in 2’s and also made his debut in 1’s. Sam was very impressive this season, especially bowling at the end, with good pace and movement. He also contributed with the bat with a match-winning 92 against Lindfield.

Mark Bruce – Brucey had a standard consistent start with two scores over 50 and over 200 runs before Christmas. Then not much after that. It’s always great to have Bruce in your team getting cranky, wearing the wrong pants, and handing out good advice.

Kulwant Dhillon – KD had a fairly consistent season all round without a real big score or bags of wickets. He always bowls good line and length, and made some good contributions with the bat; and also has very good hands at gully.

Lewis Roper – Fish had another solid season that was broken up with injuries. He bowled some very good long spells, often without luck. He did get a lot of good starts with the bat and always found interesting ways to get out. Time for a dart, Fish!

Nick Cox – Ah Cox! Coxy had a season he would rather forget. Looking good at times, he got a shocker in the semi when he was looking very good. Coxy stopped balls well and was keeping well towards the end of the year. Just ask him!

16 Epping District Cricket Club Inc. www.eppingbulls.com.au

I would also like to thank Brett Papworth, Nick Scollay, Patty Balzen, Luke Collins, Charlie Davies, James Papworth, Dylan Munro, Dan Munro, Mitch Horrocks and Steve Allard for all their contributions this year, along with Sushant Garg and Brendan Sedgers for their 12th man duties in the finals. I would also like to thank Coat and the committee for all the hard work they do. And I can’t forget our club coaches, Hoss and Kenny, for their work in the nets, as well as Tim Creer and the other selectors.

It has been an experience captaining second grade for the last two seasons; and to make the semifinals was fantastic. The platform has been set in second grade to believe a premiership is close, and with strong, positive youth coming up from 3’s and 4’s, I don’t think we are far away.

Annual Report Season 2013-14 19

3RD GRADE TEAM REPORT

I was taken back when nominated to be captain at the AGM but as the months went on and after numerous phone calls from Wirthy and Wheats the idea of captaining third grade became more appealing. Despite all my years at the club I have never captained a side for a season, just the odd cameo when injuries were involved. So to tick this off the list and push for a premiership became my focus from the very start of pre/pre season.

I started the season with an email to the selected third grade team with ‘I believe the playing personnel we have will go a long way to bringing home that elusive premiership crown’ and how right I was.

The team was full of youth and when you hand over the team sheet at every coin toss the list of under 19,17 players the list was extensive with 50 % of the team under 19. This just reinforced the position our club is in and the way of Epping’s future. It also added another level on complexity with bowling restrictions but when you can throw the ball to a Charlie Davies, Dan Munro, Dave Conlon and in the end Rohan Balani it is a great position to be in as captain and as former fast bowling great it made it a very easy decision not to put this aging body thru the rigors of the mechanical art of bowling and just let the young guys do it. That was my focus for most of the season the young bulls stand up and that they did

Not only did we have an arsenal of fast bowling young talent but also very youthful presence at the top of the order too. The likes of Cameron Court, Dylan Munro, Scotty Bennett, Aidan Federow and James Mallet complimented the older cluster of bulls standing in the slips cordon. That’s right I have taken advantage of the section 4.1.1 of Captaincy hand book and put yourself where you want. Charlie might disagree at times but I think I took more than I spilt.

Our season meandered on with plenty of solid wins and early outrights and the wheels slowed down midway thru the season and I had Wirthy hot on my heals eyeing of the talent in this team pushing for the inclusion in a very dominant 4th grade team for finals qualification. Wirthy can be persuasive when he wants to be but as usual he went off a little too early. I had plenty of faith in this group of players and I new a win or two was all we needed to get our season back on track and that came.

We finished the season 5th overall and our early outrights help us make it thru and as we all know finals cricket is a completely different game and boy to did we prove that. We accounted for Burwood two games running to help secure the Turnball/ Richardson cup and the Qualifying final to move thru to the next stage of the semi-finals. Norwest was out next opponent and this team banded together so well to dominant the Hurricanes and move into the grand final. There was a very unique moment after the Norwest game when Pappy pulled out his Premiership hat from back in 1986 which was the last time Epping had been successful in gaining a premiership. That moment and the Bull’s song being bellowed out from every brick of that huge dressing room gave me a real sense that this was going to our year.

The GF was what I can only describe as the full gamut of emotions you could possibly experience in a game of cricket. After a very wet week we started an 1hr late and after winning the toss again everything was going our way. After dismissing Mac Uni for a small total the emotion were running very high and what a day, the cricket gods were in our dressing room but oh how cricket can ground you and bring you back to earth in just 15 overs. A great session of bowling from the Mac Uni opener and old timer Brownie left me collecting my devastated emotion off the boat ramp at Tunks Park. With the game seemingly lost at 4/15 chasing 127 we started the next day with a be positive and not give up attitude however the wickets fell consistently and when the bulls supporters turned up to see us 9/40 odd they were well within their rights to turn around and go enjoy there Sunday somewhere else but once again there was twist to come. There was plenty of cricket to be played so we then turned our attention to splashing out and finishing the innings quickly so we could have another crack at the uni boys with 90 overs still to play in the day. What have we got to lose was the attitude brought about spirited fight back and all of a sudden the Uni boys were thinking how we can explain that we won the GF but lost it too. We bowled them out for 70 odd in the second dig leaving us only 145 to win the match with plenty of overs to go and so once again I and the team were riding on a massive high but and I say but again another twist in this game would swing it firmly back in favour of the Uni lads. Our top order batting let us down for the 2nd time and we lost early wickets and pressure was back on us and then step up as they did in the field the bowlers union began to nibble away at the total. With a Dogey back Lewis Roper just about pulled off the unthinkable. It came down to a run a ball and we required 14 runs off 14 balls and no wickets in the shed I couldn’t sit down. History will show we fell short, agonisingly short, but it won’t show the fight we showed on the day to almost clutch victory from the jaws of defeat as the say but this account of the day will remain in our history books for all to read and understand we almost brought a

20 Epping District Cricket Club Inc. www.eppingbulls.com.au premiership to this great club. I was very proud to lead this team and this club that particular day and the support we gained from the other club members was truly appreciated and not lost on the team

I want to thank every player that adorned the field with me this year I really enjoyed being captain and the challenge it brought. Thank you to older gents in the team Kimon & Pappy who brought average age up to about 23, you need that mix of old and new in the lower grades to make it work and we had a good mix.

Core 3rd Team members; Cameron Court, Dylan Munro, Brett Papworth, Scott Bennett, Lewis Roper, Kimon Darmon, Dan Munro, Rohan Balani, Charlie Davies, Stephen Allard, James Mallet, Dave Conlon, Anthony Azize, Pat Balzen, Aidan Federow, Dylan Shaw.

Other members, Luke Collins, Brendan Sedgers, Angus McQueen, Pat Carfax, Justin Bradley, Blake Wassell, Sushant Garg, Tom Dangerfield, Kulwant Dhillon, Josh Kew, Andrew Nicoletti, Sam Brewer, James Howes, Mitch Horrocks

Thanks to all the above players that contributed to our success this season. You made running this side very easy and enjoyable

Thank you to the other captains and Tim Creer the Chairman of Selectors for your support and hours of conversations over selections. A week is not complete without the Wirth Monday. Tuesday and Wednesday phone call. It has been a great year and with all teams gaining great success and finals appearances. That partly comes down to the leadership shown on the field. Congratulations

I look forward to going around next year and seeing this young talent progress through the grades and making Epping Bulls the powerhouse it is now becoming

4TH GRADE TEAM REPORT

The 2013/14 season was a terrific season where we ended third on the ladder and almost managed to take the ultimate prize. Unfortunately it was not to be and Georges River held the trophy aloft. So close and yet just so far.

Having said that, it truly was a glorious season where we enjoyed every game, (Except the quarter final) and played brilliantly well as a team. The problem with a season that good is what do you leave out in your report? There are so many great things to say, but there is one person who I cannot fail to mention, the efforts of the Egyptian accountant who took over 30 wickets and 300 runs, and captained the side after yours truly succumbed to injury. Just a tremendous effort. However the accountant was not alone; I cannot fail to mention some of the Italian fruiterer’s spells which were spectacular. Or Tony Azize’s catching in slips; or Thommo’s fielding which probably saved us 30 runs a match.

The list goes on. Aiden Fedorow and Scott Bennett played some great innings, Balani bowled beautifully. Angus ‘hilts’ Macqueen bowled some quick spells with some devastating results. Certainly one South Sydney opener will be marked for life in the nether regions.

The point is, everyone contributed something when the team needed it. Mick Harvey bowled some fiery spells early on until injury ended his season. However Dave Conlon picked up the mantle and demolished Linfield with a michelle. Brendan and Pat Carfax bowled some excellent spells. Allsopp remained faithful behind the stumps, as did Sushant Garg who always contributed whether behind the stumps or with the bat.

Later in the season, due to the vagaries of selection, we picked up Balzen, Mallett and Shaw for the finals and all fitted into the team culture and played some outstanding cameo innings.

However, I have left the best till last. The achievements of one Cameron Court. In his first season of adult cricket in fourth grade, at the age of 15, Cameron scored over 600 runs, with three centuries at an average of 102. A truly remarkable performance.

As captain I was very proud of how we played the game, which was reflected in our high score for ‘Spirit of Cricket’. Thanks to everyone who was part of 4th grade Epping in season 2013/14.

Team highlights; there were some fantastic triumphs in our six month campaign. To start the season with outright against Roseville was one of the sweetest victories of all. Our demolition of Strathfield in both 20/20 and the one dayer were sweet. Unfortunately the Bullants caught the brunt of a club record 273 run partnership between Bennett and Court. Our outright against South Sydney, when needing only 56 in 8 overs we managed it with an over to spare, with a six from Cameron Court which no one is likely to forget.

Still, there is one success that stands above them all. After being pasted by Georges River in the quarter final, the boys could have dropped their heads, seeing we were facing a fearsome Norwest team that had dominated everyone the whole season. But we didn’t and went out there as determined to show anyone we had a right to be in the final as anyone else; and we proved it and belted them. A total victory for team spirit and self-belief.

Individual highlights; honestly there were simply too many. Andrew Nicoletti’s six for; Gus’s three Michelle’s, Cameron’s three glorious centuries; Aiden’s stoic fifties, Scott’s fantastic innings against Strathfield. If I have left anyone out my apologies, there were simply too many great efforts to write up in this short report.

Areas of improvement; we need to win the toss more. And quite frankly the poor performances with the ‘high five’ means we may need to ban it from fourth grade altogether, and go back to more masculine and traditional means of showing our exuberance and enthusiasm.

We had well over 25 players who made an appearance in fourth grade this season. Thanks to everyone who played and gave their time to be part of the team. It was greatly appreciated.

Matt Brookes, Naji Haider, Sean Conlon, Joel Schiffler, Greg Bennett and the indefatigable Nick Wilson also played a number of games and contributed to the team.

Honourable mention needs to be made of Steve Commons superb effort with ball and bat which set up our outright against Roseville. J Bradley’s few games just to get his match fitness up in order to play two’s. William

Annual Report Season 2013-14 25

Dunn made a brutal 67 versus Auburn, Nick Cox brought us home against Lane Cove with his fellow accountant. And last but not least was the contribution of one D Hossack, who having crossed the white line took no prisoners at Ern Holmes oval.

Again, thanks to everyone who played with fourth grade in 2013/14. I am looking forward to next season. Perhaps next season we will hold aloft the Harry Culbert trophy!

5TH GRADE TEAM REPORT

This season was a difficult one for the feisty 5s. We had moments of success and moments of failure, overall our fielding and bowling has improved a great deal compared to last season, we were almost always able to put pressure on batting line up and do well to restrict them. As a whole our fielding was much better and we dropped fewer catches and our ground fielding was much better too. Unfortunately our batting has been our major weakness throughout the season, we failed to build partnerships and build momentum when needed.

This season we went back onto the synthetic, it was a rather competitive competition, there were many games where we came very close to winning but were short by 20-30 runs. Hopefully by next season we can improve our batting and build more partnerships.

At the end of the season we finished up last unfortunately with 2 wins.

The Players (Core Team)

Sean Thompson Sean played about half the season with us, whenever he has played, he has had some sort of impact on the game whether it be with the bat or ball, Sean is also an outstanding fielder with a great set of hands.

Navin Yasotharan Navin has had an up and down season, there have been periods where his scored lots of runs but also period where he has struggled to score runs. He made a few half centuries and fielded well and took a few catches, Navin also captained the side when no one was available to and he did a great job.

Hayden Doria Hayden has had a great season he has been the go to man with the ball, for the whole season, he has recovered from his back injury and has been bowling with great accuracy and control. Whenever we are searching for a wicket Hayden has been the go to man and also when we need someone to build pressure he was able to do that too. Hayden also scored some handy runs from time to time

Andrew Finalyson Unfortunately finny struggled to get any large scores but he has managed to make a lot of starts throughout the season. The 20 runs made up with a six and two fours was known as the standard finny innings, would have loved to see him go on with those starts and get a big score.

Isaac El Hassan Isaac has been by far our most improved player, he started off the season not being confident in his ability but as the season progressed he improved a lot and he started bowling much better and also started getting a few runs.

Paul James He played a few games, Paul always contributed with the ball or with the bat. His experience was much needed in this young side. He bowled some useful spells.

James Allsopp James was our wicket keeper and he did a great job in doing so, he took numerous catches. Furthermore James also made many runs on consistent basis, James always scored his runs quite quickly, and it was always exciting to watch him bat. When James gets in, it always rained boundaries.

Mick Sedgers Mick opened the batting and most of the time got through the new ball, Mick made a few starts but like most of us couldn’t go on with it. Mick experience was much appreciated, having him on the team personally made my job easier. Mick also did lots of damage on a consistent basis to many batting line ups we faced, furthermore Mick took a few great catches and has always thrown himself around in the field.

Mathew Sanderson Matt Started of the season well with a solid 43 runs but after that he struggled to make runs on a consistent basis. If he gets some more consistency he would be a good middle order batsman.

Annual Report Season 2013-14 29

Joel Schiffler Joel started of the season really well, his inswingers were unplayable at times, and he took a 5 fa and rattled Castle in his first game. He has always bowled accurately and has not been afraid to pitch the ball up. He has been consistent throughout the season. Joel has a good batting technique but unfortunately we didn’t see his true potential with the bat. Matt Brooks

Matt joined us late the in the season, Matt bowls leg spin and at times the has spun the ball so much that he has been unplayable and he has deceived many batsman with the wrongun, if he could get a little more consistency he would be a great asset to the club. Matt showed potential with the bat but couldn’t capitalise on starts.

FRANK GREY SHIELD U/24’S TEAM REPORT

After an unfortunate loss in the semi finals in the 2012/13 season The Baby Bulls started off the season optimistically. With the majority of the squad back again for the 2013/14 season under the guidance of our newest member Coach Phillip Hood, our goal was to take home the Frank Grey Shield. Using the previous season as a chance to grow as individuals and as a team we started off the season with a convincing 7-wicket bonus point win against South Sydney.

In Round 2, we faced our ultimate rivals Warringah a benchmark team who defeated us in the semis and went on to take the Shield the previous year. While we underperformed in battling which ultimately led to a loss, our strong bowling performance and in the field made it close and showed how we had improved as a team, giving us confidence moving forward.

The Baby Bulls came back strong with Matthew Wilkins starring with both bat and ball leading us to a commanding bonus point win against Macquarie Uni. A nail biting 11 run victory against one of our main competitors Georges River followed this. An outstanding opening spell by Blake Wassell, a promising newcomer to the club and the team, was a highlight of this victory. This crucial win gave us much needed confidence and helped us find a rhythm, which was evident from a successive bonus point win against Southern Districts.

This three match winning streak was halted by an unexpected loss against Roseville in round 6, the last round before finals. This placed us third on the ladder, which meant a rematch of last year’s quarter final against North West Sydney. However unlike last year, the Baby Bulls came through with a crushing 84 run victory.

This win ensured a semi-final match up against close rivals Georges River. Unlucky for us the weather wasn’t in our favour and our season ended here. This proved a hard loss as prior to rain we had Georges River reeling with the score at 4/53. This was an undeserving way to exist the competition however our merit remains in the quality of the game we played and our sportsmanship. The amount of improvement from all player as individuals and as a team over the season was inspiring and shows plenty of promise for the next season.

Michael Mckeough (captain) – Macca has been the cornerstone of the Baby Bulls for the past 3 years. Since being appointed captain, he has not only changed the attitude of the players but he has turned us into winners. This was matched by his continued all round performance, choosing to lead by example. Macca has ended his 24s career as the first player to make the top 10 Run getters and Wicket Takers.

Patrick Balzen - Although we didn’t see much of Patrick through the season, he shows plenty of promise as a future top order batsman. After delivering strong performances in Saturday Cricket, I’m sure he’ll get plenty more opportunities to play for the Baby Bulls.

Sam Brewer – Chicken Legs became one of the solid all rounders for the team this season. Sam was capable of bowling tight spells and also played a number of crucial innings with the bat in the middle order. I believe that with the future seasons to come, Sam will play a key role as one of the main all rounders of the team.

Luke Collins – LC played every game with his heart, always willing to contribute with the bat and ball. I hope to see him play more regularly in the seasons to come.

Mitchell Healey – Heals played the vital role as No. 3 batsman for the Baby Bulls. Unfortunately, Mitch didn’t have the most fruitful season however his talent as a batsman will lead him to many future successful seasons.

Mitchell Horrocks – Hot Rocks was a great addition to the team half way through the season, as a powerful middle order batsman. He was able to provide a number of strong batting performances to lead us home on a number of occasions.

Joshua Kew – The Baby Bulls were excited to include Joshua in his debutant season as a Bull. He provided needed stability at the top of the order, he also showed potential with the ball. I’m looking forward to seeing him play in future seasons.

Dylan Munro – Dyl is a promising batsman that has a bright future ahead of him in the Baby Bulls outfit. After a successful season in Saturday cricket, I’m looking forward to watching him perform in 24s.

Annual Report Season 2013-14 33

James Papworth – This was a breakout season for Paps as our number one keeper. He kept flawlessly behind the wickets and provided great support with the bat. I hope that he continues to play in future season as a key senior player.

Christopher Steffan – Steff became our lead bowler providing great pace and good control. It was great see him improve and mature as a bowler. It was a welcomed surprise to see him working well with the bat as well, providing many vital innings over the season.

Blake Wassell – Blake immediately became one of our key players. After emerging as one of our new ball bowlers, we came to rely on him to provide us with early break throughs. Furthermore, he also contributed as a solid late order batesman.

Matthew Wilkins – Wilko became our most valuable player for the season as our strongest all rounder. He cemented his spot as our opening batsman scoring the most runs for the team this season. This was complimented by his role as a fulltime spinner, taking 13 wickets for the season. I hope he continues to harness his skills and talent as a cricketer for future seasons with the Bulls.

Nic Wilson - TB solidified his spot as a middle order batsman this year. He was able to provide us with consistent performance with the bat however could not break the half century mark, His enthusiasm and talent will lead him to success in seasons to come.

To conclude, our season was unfairly cut short but has been the best season since 2005/06. This shows we have continued to grow and improve as a team, I’m sure the experience we’ve gained from this season will put us in contention to win the shield next year 2014/15. I wish the boys all the best; I will miss playing with the Baby Bulls next season but I know next season you will take what you boys deserve

Annual Report Season 2013-14 35

Did you know…? In Season 1997-98, Ian Wheatley became Epping’s first player to pass 1000 runs in Frank Grey matches.

In our 75th Anniversary Season of 2007-08, Al Tay became our first player to achieve 50 Frank Gray wickets.

Andrew Smythe represented Epping for 10 consecutive seasons in the Under 24’s. Great effort.
