Life in a Padded Cell: A Biography of Tony Cohen, Australian Sound Engineer by Dale Blair ©copyright ~ One ~ Satan has possessed your Soul! ‘Tony is very devout in “God’s Lesson”. I cannot speak highly enough of Tony’s manners and behaviour. They are beyond reproach’. It was the sort of report card every parent liked to see. It was 1964. The Beatles were big and Tony Cohen was a Grade One student at St. Francis de Sales primary school, East Ringwood. The following year he took his first communion. The Beatles were still big and there seemed little to fear for the parents of this conscientious and attentive eight-year-old boy. The sisters who taught him at that early age would doubtless have been shocked at the life he would come to lead – a life that could hardly be described as devout. Tony Cohen was born on 4 June 1957 in the maternity ward of the Jessie MacPherson hospital in Melbourne. Now a place specializing in the treatment of cancer patients it was a general hospital then. He was christened Anthony Lawrence Cohen. His parents Philip and Margaret Cohen had been living in James Street, Windsor, but had moved to the outer eastern suburb of East Ringwood prior to the birth of their son. Philip Cohen was the son of Jewish immigrants who had left Manchester, England, and settled in Prahran, one of Melbourne’s inner eastern suburbs. Philip’s father had served in the First World War, survived and then migrated to Australia with his wife and infant son (Tony’s Uncle David).

After spending his first two years at Serra, he decided to transfer to a local public school for his junior year because he was concerned about his family’s financial situation. Although he was a good student and athlete, he was not sure if Serra were the best fit for him. By his own admission, his attitude and behavior were not always in keeping with our school’s standards—which led him to some difficulties. Immediately upon his arrival at his new school, the student began to doubt his decision. He missed Serra’s quality programs, structure and expectations. He missed the commitment of his Serra teachers, who helped him to be the THE ANNUAL REPORT ISSUE very best person he could be—academically, morally and spiritually. • The Power of Sport Building Social Bridges and Breaking Down Cultural Barriers
Faculty of Humanities Centre for Aboriginal Studies The Power of Sport Building social bridges and breaking down cultural barriers Paul Oliver This thesis is presented for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy of Curtin University September 2014 The Power of Sport ii Declaration To the best of my knowledge and belief this thesis contains no material previously published by any other person except where due acknowledgement has been made. This thesis contains no material that has been accepted for the award of any other degree or diploma in any university. Signature: Date: 20 September 2014 The Power of Sport iii Abstract This thesis set out to find evidence whether sport was effective at breaking down cultural barriers across sporting communities for Indigenous people and those from Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CaLD) backgrounds, and if it could build bridges by contributing to wider social, physical and health issues, and thereby generate increased social capital in communities. Drawing upon new insights and experiences of online survey respondents and interviewees who are directly involved in various capacities in all levels of sport in Australia, this research finds that sport is not the magic bullet to ‘cure all’ social ills that many assume, in fact in many cases sport reaffirms many existing power structures which cause discrimination and inequality. However, participation in and through sport can help processes of belonging, trust and inclusion, and if managed correctly, sport can be an excellent medium for encouraging awareness and valuable public debate on wider social issues. This thesis aims to contribute to existing sport and sociology studies concerning social capital and exclusion and discrimination in elite and community sporting contexts.
