Sussex local DAB re-tune and coverage extension – 9th December 2015 Please be advised, there will be a DAB frequency change and new transmitters launched in the Sussex area. This will require you to re-tune your DAB radio to continue to listen to your local DAB radio stations. Please note, these changes will only affect the following DAB radio stations in the Sussex area; BBC Sussex Heart Sussex Smooth Sussex Capital Gold Gaydio Smile Sussex Kisstory Heat These changes are being made to allow an addition of three new transmitters at Truleigh Hill, Heathfield, and Crawley (Little Prestwood Farm) which will improve coverage in the county. This improved coverage will allow a further 152,000 homes to receive their local DAB stations. Please note; there will be another two transmitters coming on-line in late January 2016, these will be in the Midhurst and Rye area adding a further 20,000 households. In August 2016 will also see another new transmitter at Horsham adding a further 23,000 households into DAB coverage. When can I retune my radio? You can return your radio after 6am on Wednesday 9th December, DAB listeners may not be able to receive the local stations prior to this time. Which stations will be affected? The changes will only affect the local DAB radio station in the Sussex area. After 06:00 on Wednesday 9th December 2015, you will need to carry out an “Auto Tune” or on some models called “Scan”. How to perform this retuning process is covered in the radio user guide, or if misplaced, can be downloaded on the technical support website https://www.robertsradiotechnical.co.uk/ What about my TV, FM and MW receivers? These changes do NOT affect FM, MW, Online or digital television; this is a DAB frequency change only What about my other DAB receivers, (not made by Roberts)? Impact case study (REF3b) Institution: University of Sussex Unit of Assessment: UoA 30 History Title of case study: Mass Observation and public engagement 1. Summary of the impact Mass Observation has encouraged public participation in the creation of knowledge since 1937 and pioneered the dissemination of social research to a mass audience. Active collaboration between Sussex historians and the Mass Observation Archive continues to shape popular understandings of modern British social history, specifically through work with the media. This partnership has also created an Open Educational Resource through which the public can gain a hands-on understanding of the very recent past. Working with the Mass Observations Project, Sussex academics encourage ‘ordinary’ people to write directly about their lives within a structured environment, creating historical sources for the future. 2. Underpinning research The Mass Observation Archive is a charitable trust in the care of the University of Sussex, awarded designated status by the Museums, Libraries and Archives Council as having outstanding national and international importance. Its unique collection profoundly shapes our understanding of everyday life in modern Britain. It contains diary, questionnaire and survey material generated between 1937 and c.1960, and discursive ‘directive’ responses from a volunteer panel of writers who have contributed to the on-going Mass Observation Project (MOP). Over 4,500 people have taken part in the MOP since 1981; there are currently 500 volunteer writers. The underpinning research of this case study is a series of publications and digital resources that collectively reveal ordinary people’s understandings of themselves and their social worlds, providing an empirical and conceptual underpinning to an ever-expanding public interest in social history.

Finalists Are Announced in This Year's BBC Sussex Community Heroes
Finalists are announced in this year’s BBC Sussex Community Heroes Awards 2017 We have great pleasure in announcing this year’s finalists in our annual Community Heroes Awards, held in conjunction with BBC Sussex, which are now in their seventh year. Once again, we were bowled over by the incredible standard of entries received, so a big thank you to everyone who made a nomination. All of our finalists will attend a special ceremony on Monday, 20 November. We will then update this page with photographs of the event and details of the overall winners in each category. You will also be able to hear a special programme of highlights on Sunday 26 November 4-5pm (repeated on Christmas Day and New Year’s Day 6-7pm). So, here they are: 999 Surrey Search and Rescue This group of ninety volunteers are on call to the police every day of the year whatever the weather, to search for, find and rescue high risk, missing vulnerable people in Surrey. They recently attended their 500th incident and have received The Queen's Award for Voluntary Service. PC David Rea and PC John Winter These two officers successfully dealt with a terrifying ordeal, where a man was on a sixth floor balcony, threatening to harm both himself and his baby. They managed to restrain the offender and the baby was brought to safety. PCSO Colin Gibbons PCSO Gibbons has been serving the Shepperton community for almost eleven years, where he is extremely well-known and liked. Colin is relentless when it comes to identifying offenders and has recently supported vulnerable people as lead PCSO for a Domestic Abuse project.
