Helgol Mar Res (2016) 70:24 DOI 10.1186/s10152-016-0476-5 Helgoland Marine Research ORIGINAL ARTICLE Open Access A new species of Cephalorhyncha Adrianov, 1999 (Kinorhyncha: Cyclorhagida) from the Aegean Coast of Turkey Nuran Özlem Yıldız1*, Martin Vinther Sørensen2 and Süphan Karaytuğ3 Abstract Kinorhynchs are marine, microscopic ecdysozoan animals that are found throughout the world’s ocean. Cephalorhyn- cha flosculosa sp. nov. is described from the Aegean Coast of Turkey. Samples were collected from intertidal zones at two localities. The new species is distinguished from its congeners by having flosculi in midventral positions on segment 3–8, and by differences in its general spine and sensory spot positions. Until now, species of Cephalorhyn- cha were only known from the Pacific Ocean, hence, this record of the genus at the Aegean Sea not only expands its geographic distribution to Turkey, but is likely to expand it throughout the Mediterranean Sea and much of south- ern Europe. The new species of Cephalorhyncha represents the fifth kinorhynch species recorded from Turkey, and increases also the number of known Cephalorhyncha species to four. Cracks and fissures in translucent quartz rocks permit an adequate amount of penetrating light, sufficient water and nutrients to support cryptic microbial development. Hypolithons colonizing the ventral surface of these quartz rocks have been classified into three types: cyanobacterial dominated (Type I), moss dominated (Type II) and lichenized (Type III) communities. Eukaryotic microbial communities were reported to represent only a minor fraction of Antarctic communities. In this study, culture independent techniques (DGGE, T-RFLP and clone library construction) were employed to determine the profile of the dominant eukaryotes, fungi and microalgae present in the three different hypolithic communities. The 18S rRNA gene (Euk for eukaryotes), internal transcribed spacer (ITS for fungi) and microalgal specific regions of the 18S rRNA gene, were the phylogenetic markers targeted for PCR amplification from hypolith metagenomic DNA. -

Abstract The phylum Kinorhyncha includes 196 described species, distributed on 21 (soon 22) genera, and nine families. Two genera are currently not assigned to any family. The families are distributed on two orders, Cyclorhagida and Homalorhagida. Currently, kinorhynch classification does not reflect actual relationships revealed as a result of numerical phylogenetic analyses, but such studies are currently being carried out, and a revision of the kinorhynch classification is expected within a short time. Key words: Kinorhyncha, Cyclorhagida, Homalorhagida, taxonomy, diversity Introduction Until very recently, Kinorhyncha was one of the few animal phyla left that never had been subject for modern numerical phylogenetic analyses on phylum level, hence the current classification of the group is still the reflection a traditional view based on phenetics rather than phylogenetic relationships. Through time, only a few handfuls of researchers have studied kinorhynch systematics, hence, even after knowing the group for more than 150 years, the study of the group is still on a pioneer stage. The first kinorhynch species was described by Dujardin (1851), but Karl Zelinka was the first person to carry out thorough studies on the group, and his classification is still reflected in present days’ kinorhynch system. -

I wished to do something on their behavior, be it social behavior, migratory patterns or something similar. How, then, did I end up with a subject on the completely opposite side of the spectrum? After all, the microscopic Kinorhyncha bear little resemblance to the giants I originally wished to work on. For starters, marine mammals are a difficult group to work with, as they can be elusive, and the sample size needed to find statistically significant results makes it difficult to conduct a full project over the <two years intended for a master’s degree. The best I could hope for was to join a group of scientist already conducting a project and using some data already obtained. I looked for a while, and had no luck finding any possible supervisors on this particular subject. Finally, I sent an email to professor Lutz Bachmann at the Natural History Museum of Oslo, inquiring about the possibilities of him supervising me on a thesis about marine mammals. The reply I received was optimistic, and a meeting was scheduled. On this meeting however, I found out that the only project on whales I could be given was a project on ancient genetic material. While this project did sound interesting, the prospect of little to no fieldwork made me a bit disconcerted. -
