  • NGP Study Tour Diary Kwazulu-Natal, South Africa 10-14 November 2014
NGP study tour diary KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa 10-14 November 2014 If you were to make a list of the world’s great rivers, the uMngeni (Umgeni) River wouldn’t be one of the first to spring to mind. Rising in the mistbelt of KwaZulu-Natal province, South Africa, it meanders a couple of hundred kilometres down to the sea at Durban. But to the people of this region, it could hardly be more important. The uMngeni basin or catchment area accounts for 15% of South Africa’s economic output, almost all of it dependent on fresh water, and supplies water to more than 4 million people in the cities of Durban and Pietermaritzburg. Yet this is a river in trouble. While much of KZN is lush and green (and we’ll experience plenty of rain during the course of our week here), water stress is growing. In South Africa as a whole, if current patterns continue then by 2025 there simply won’t be enough water to meet rising demand. The implications of that are frightening. Forest plantations are one of the major land uses in the upper and mid uMngeni catchment, and a major water user. Water scarcity is a business risk for the sector – and it’s also the sector’s responsibility to be part of the solution. And that’s why NGP is here on this study tour. But plantations are only one part of the picture. Water is the ultimate shared resource, and finding sustainable solutions means bringing together everyone who has an impact on the river basin.

  • Gender, Power and Iron Metallurgy in Archives of African Societies from the Phongolo-Mzimkhulu Region
Gender, power and iron metallurgy in archives of African societies from the Phongolo-Mzimkhulu region Steven Kotze A thesis submitted to the Faculty of Humanities, University of Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, in fulfilment of the requirements of Master of Arts. Durban, 2018 Declaration I declare that this thesis is my own, unaided work unless otherwise acknowledged. It is being submitted for the Degree of Master of Arts at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg. It has not been submitted before for any degree or examination at any other university. Steven Kotze 15 July 2018 i Abstract This dissertation examines the social, cultural and economic significance of locally forged field-hoes, known as amageja in Zulu. A key question I have engaged in this study is whether gender-based divisions of labour in nineteenth-century African communities of this region, which largely consigned agricultural work to women, also affect attitudes towards the tools they used. I argue that examples of field-hoes held in eight museum collections form an important but neglected archive of “hoeculture”, the form of subsistence crop cultivation based on the use of manual implements, within the Phongolo-Mzimkhulu geographic region that roughly approximates to the modern territory of KwaZulu-Natal. In response to observations made by Maggs (1991), namely that a disparity exists in the numbers of field- hoes collected by museums in comparison with weapons, I conducted research to establish the present numbers of amageja in these museums, relative to spears in the respective collections. The dissertation assesses the historical context that these metallurgical artefacts were produced in prior to the twentieth-century and documents views on iron production, spears and hoes or agriculture recorded in oral testimony from African sources, as well as Zulu-language idioms that make reference to hoes.

However, they are facing growing human pressures such as urban encroachment, development in river catchments and interference in hydrological cycles. 1 This dissertation provides an exploratory study of the environmental history of the Mgeni River Estuary, KwaZulu-Natal in an attempt to improve the understanding of the forces that drive environmental change. Through the application of the techniques and methodologies of environmental history, it explores the dynamics, characteristics and impacts of human interaction with the Mgeni River Estuary over time.

  • South Africa Travel Guide 2017
South Africa Travel Guide 2017 1 From the Editor... After a few failed attempts at collecting travel information about South Africa, I decided it would be a great idea to publish my own South Africa Travel Guide. It has taken me about 3 years to assemble this valuable publication (in between extra hours in the CLO Office and publishing JJ’s and Classifieds, and more Classi- fieds, and more JJ’s). Realistically, I thought I would lose my mind if I heard, “I will send over travel brochures ‘just now’” one more time... It has been a lot of work, but being in the CLO Office is the reason that I started this venture in the first place. My favorite part of working in the CLO Office is helping people who are searching for travel information. There is no greater reward as the Editor of the Jacaranda Journal, than to hear that one of my readers has booked a vacation or some sort of adventure because of a travel story or advice from our office. Travelling means taking a break from everyday routines and just enjoying life. I personally believe that there is so much benefit to travel, which is why I am hoping this Guide entices you to travel more. Travel gives us better perspective, it makes us more adaptable and adventurous, and it just makes people happy. We are in a unique position, living life in the Foreign Service, and one of the greatest benefits is seeing the world. We get the opportunity to see places we would never have dreamed of and even better, we get to share them sometimes with friends and family.

  • Existing Persberg Dam Wall Phase 1 Heritage Impact
EXISTING PERSBERG DAM WALL, PERSBERG FARM (PORTION LINDE NO 4733) SITUATED NEAR HELPMEKAAR, MSINGA LOCAL MUNICIPALITY, UMZINYATHI DISTRICT MUNICIPALITY, KWAZULU- NATAL Phase 1 Heritage Impact Assessment 15 August 2019 FOR: Afzelia Environmental Consultants Deshni Naicker AUTHOR: JLB Consulting Jean Beater EXECUTIVE SUMMARY The Applicant commenced with listed activities within a watercourse on Persberg Farm in August 2015 without the required authorisation. The dam wall has been raised to a height of 8.5 m and the dam covers an area of 8.4 hectares and is estimated to hold a capacity of 152 000 m³ (cubic meters) of water when full. As a result of a non-compliance with Section 25 of NEMA, a rectification process was commenced that included a Basic Assessment process in terms of the EIA Regulations, 2014 (as amended on 7 April 2017). This Heritage Impact Assessment (HIA) report forms part of the Basic Assessment process. Interim comment received from the KwaZulu-Natal Amafa and Research Institute, the provincial heritage authority, stated that the development footprint falls within the red zone of the palaeontology sensitivity zone (very high fossil sensitivity) meaning that a palaeontologist must complete a survey of the development area. Furthermore, the area where the proposed development footprint is located used to have old structures situated close by and the area may therefore contain heritage artefacts or graves hence a heritage impact assessment (HIA) is required. This Phase 1 HIA report is in response to this requirement. The dam is situated within a watercourse on Persberg Farm (Portions Linde No 4733) that falls in the Msinga Local Municipality that falls within the Umzinyathi District Municipality, KwaZulu- Natal.
